Congratulations on your surgery! I had the same shoulder pain when I got my surgery too, I’m one month post op and I can go a whole day without food cause I dont feel hunger so I forget to eat lol! The pain and tiredness gets better with time. Stay positive x

I'm on day 11. Protein Shakes and 2 cups of certain vegetables per day. First two days were tricky for me, then my body just seemed to adjust and my energy levels spiked. It's been a lot easier than I was expecting - helped along no doubt by an undercurrent of nerves as D-day approaches.

Mine's in 8 days too, Leslie, and likewise, my nerves are starting to kick in. I'm also not afraid of the surgery, I think it's the life change after. A big life change and a big change being made to my body itself. It's no small thing! The food-addict bit of my brain is having a little last-gasp flail knowing things won't be the same ever again, but it's thankfully being drowned out by the rest of mind that's so very ready for this.
I'm picking triumphant, upbeat songs on spotify and playing them on repeat. Along with keeping busy, it helps!

I'm well! My surgeon's office gave me a heads up on which pathology lab to avoid due to long waits on results, and thankfully the one that's literally around the corner from me was a different group and I go my results at about 1am last night. *phew* And our outbreak seems to be flattening out, so I'm pretty hopeful that it's plain sailing from here. Just got to get my hospital bag in order!
Folks have suggested Biotene spray for dry mouth, so I'm going out today to grab some. I've got my chewable vitamins supposedly in the mail but AusPost is having delays and issues, so just hoping it arrives in time for when I get home. I've got back-ups of Protein powders, and a bag of protein Water ready for post-op. I'm going to buy the vegan collagen support powder I was eying off. So post-op is organised!
You've done the hard work! So exciting you're this close! I'm about 48hrs away, so I won't be far behind you! Honestly, all that can be done now is organise your hospital stay bag.
How are you holding up mentally? I'm pretty calm now that I've done everything I need to do.

Smanky got a reaction from PCOS_Mama94 in What does the surgery feel like?
You won't even feel yourself get sleepy. The nurses will be chatting and then suddenly you're in recovery. It's literally like a time jump.
Both my previous surgeries (an ACL knee reconstruction and a gall bladder removal) were different waking up. I woke up in recovery after my knee like my brain and body was wading through mud. Making involuntary noises. I could hear the nurse and she was shouting at me to "stop" whatever I was doing, and I managed with great effort to tell her that I couldn't help it. Then I must've lost consciousness again and was being wheeled back into the ward.
My gallbladder op was smoother, I woke up in recovery pretty well, like waking up from sleep, and was wheeled back to the ward.
It's worth noting that the knee one was waaaaaaay back in 2000, and I had a rougher time all round post-surgery (and honestly I don't think that hospital was terribly good - only one nurse was nice). The gallbladder op was in 2015 and was a breeze - much better hospital.

I had my "last hurrahs" leading up to my pre-op diet. What I'm going to be doing before I begin my nil-by-mouth is enjoy guzzling Water, because I know I won't be able to do that again. Just that sensation of downing a large glass in one go. Adieu, ol' guzzle!

His objection to your weight loss is not about you, it's about him.
Next time he makes a comment like that, call him on it. It doesn't have to be accusatory or confrontational, just a calm even-tempered question. Why does he need to cut you down, does it make him feel good to hurt your feelings? Why is your appearance more important to him than your good health?
If you are not able to ask him those questions, find a counselor who will. He's either dealing with personal insecurity and afraid he'll lose you (which he/you can work through), or he only wants a relationship in which he has total control over every aspect of what you do and will demand that his needs and desires outweigh yours (from which you should run).
Having unraveled, and eventually ended, a dysfunctional relationship, I understand the fear of facing that reality. It was the hardest and scariest part of my life and took more emotional stamina and personal strength than I thought I had in me. It was also the best thing I ever did for myself, and I never could have done it alone. Our couples counselor, and eventually my private therapist, saved my life. Please get help, you deserve it.
If he refuses counseling, that is a huge red flag.

I'm better now. Ive read so much that im on sleeve overload. Started getting worried about tracking my macros and will i stick with the plan. Reread my booklet from my surgeon etc and they focus on fluids and 60gm Protein. So that simplified it for me. 32 year recovering opiate addict so I'm really happy to read that you didnt require narcotics for pain. Huge relief!
Tomorrow I'll pack and make a vat of chili so my husband doesn't have to cook and can just with me.
I drank almost an entire 2 liter of Pepsi today. I'm really really going to miss that poison!
    Keep in touch!

I was shopping at costco today and walked up to a display of down vest type jackets. There was a woman looking at them as well. As I was digging through the pile she said “Oh, I already looked-they’re out of smalls in all colors”. Even two years post op it surprised and delighted me to have a stranger look at me and assess me as a size small. It made my day 😊

I posted back in August about my surgery getting canceled because of a covid surge in my area. I was devastated and facing losing my insurance. As luck would have it, I got to keep my insurance another month and was rescheduled for tomorrow. I have been trying really hard not to get my hopes up, but I just had my pre-op appointment and so far everything is a go. I’m crossing every appendage I have that tomorrow goes off without a hitch. I’m supposed to check in at the hospital at 10 am.

    Update:
Getting much easier to deal with. My energy levels are coming back though I’m still as weak as a newborn kitten.

Gas pains got a lot better, especially once I finally had a BM. I think it was backing up in there—take your Dulcolax or Miralax or milk of magnesia religiously!

I do get grinding hunger pangs that feel like my stomach is literally twisting on itself. I made some Protein Jello (big box of orange sugar free Jello plus half a scoop of vanilla whey protein = creamsicle) for when I can’t handle the pains. They pass quickly but are debilitating. 8 cal of protein jello and I can sort of stave them off.

I walk one minute every 15 minutes plus 5k a day which takes about 40-45 minutes. I’ll start running once I feel like I can sweat safely.

scale victory: down 9.6 lbs. in three days.

NSV: Had to size down in shorts and throw out unders that are too big. Also my BP went from 145/85 with two meds a day before surgery to 123/68 with one med three days out.

One of the things that contributed to my stress about this surgery was not knowing what was going to happen. (What can I say, I'm a control freak.)

So here is the play-by-play as it pertains to me of my surgery. Your mileage may vary! I'll try to come back and update it. Hopefully it'll be of use to someone—"and knowing is half the battle."

    Day before surgery
Liquid-only diet; two bowls of phở broth, some Protein2O, apple juice, and sugar-free lemon Jello. Got about 830 calories in.
Had to take a shower with a special CHG (chlorhexidine gluconate) anti-septic body wash. It made my skin a bit "slippery".
Packed my bag with my CPAP hose, a book, a spare shirt, some chanclas for walking, my cell phone charger, and my reading glasses.
Put out the two pills I was supposed to take (no losartan because it interferes with anesthesia).

    Day of surgery
Took another shower with CHG as required. Reported to the hospital at 0630 as requested. Was checked in and taken to pre-surgery holding. My fiancé was allowed to go with me as an exception, because I'm hard of hearing and rely on lip-reading which is impossible with so many masks and partitions in the way.
A surgical RN came and told me to wipe my abdomen with CHG wipes, then put on my surgical gown (which was HUGE on me—I understand I'm a bariatric patient but I literally couldn't keep it on my shoulders). Then he put an IV in the back of my hand, took my vitals (I lost 10 lbs in the two weeks between my surgeon's consultation and surgery day), went through all my medications, put an anti-nausea patch behind my ear, and gave me a blood thinner in my IV.
My surgeon came in and asked if I was ready, went over a few things, then went to scrub up.
My anesthesiologist came in and asked if I had had anesthesia before (yes), and if I had any questions. I asked him to give me a TAP block at the end of surgery, which is a localized nerve block, like an epidural for your abdomen. It lasts 12-18 hours.
I was whisked away and the next thing I knew I was in the recovery room, where I was given cognitive tests (what is your name, what hospital are you at, who's the president, etc.) and given ice chips. Once that all proved satisfactory, I was wheeled to my room. I don't remember it, because I fell asleep.
Once in the room they put leg compression stockings on me and gave me Water, Crystal Light made way too sweet, chicken broth that tasted like a salt lick, and a thicker vegetable purée Soup. I couldn't get the vegetable soup down. I forced the chicken broth, Crystal Light, and water. I felt very, very hungry and it was frustrating not to be able to just eat something.
I took 3 or 4 laps of the surgical unit floor in my fetching anti-slip socks, and kept falling asleep. The pain from the gas was pretty bad and I spent a good 30 minutes just burping, much to the chagrin of the man in the other bed in the room (though he was moaning so he doesn't get to say anything).
Around 1730 the nurse came in, saw that I had drunk what I could and had peed sufficiently (you pee into a graduated container), and that I could walk. She asked my surgeon's permission to discharge me, and I was in the wheelchair going out the door at 1830, exactly 12 hours after I arrived.
When we got home, I pretty much washed my hands and face and went straight to bed. I got up probably every 2 hours or so, would have a couple of sips of Protein Shake or water, along with Gas-X (simethicone) or, as needed, Tylenol. I did get about 7 hours of sleep, in various chunks. I was able to lie, carefully, on my side, which is how I prefer to sleep. My CPAP did increase the gas pressure inside a bit but it was tolerable.

    Day 1 post-op
My first bout of the 'foamies'. I tried to drink a CorePower Protein milk way too fast and spent an hour and a half wandering around whimpering. It was actively painful and it felt enough like I needed to vomit that I had a lined bucket at the ready. Eventually, though, it subsided.
Gas pain is still here and very real, but better. We went for a walk which absolutely tired me out—and it was barely 500 meters!
Right now I am using the timer on my cell phone to remind me to drink 1/3 oz. of Fluid every 5 minutes, and I feel full but it's manageable. I am alternating full ounces of regular water and protein water. I also made some Jell-O with extra Protein Powder but the thought of eating it leaves me cold. If I can get these bottles down plus the shake I had earlier, I'll be pretty close to 48 oz. of fluid which is my surgeon's requirement for the first week (bumps up to 64 oz. after that) and 41 g of protein which will have to do for the first day unless I manage to get some of the Jell-O down me.
I have been taking Tylenol, Gas-X, and my ondansetron—the nausea is there but it's in the background, like when you step off a ship onto land at the end of a cruise.
I haven't had enough pain to necessitate anything stronger than Extra Strength Tylenol. My incisions are clean (I took a shower).

My VSG surgery was Monday September 13th. I'm now officially 3 days post-OP! I am currently experiencing no pain, just a little bit of gas due to them having to pump me up with gas for the procedure. The trick to relieving this is WALKING! I'm kind of having an issue with my Fluid intake tho, but other than that I am one happy camper and sooooo excited to start this new chapter of my life!

He not only doesn't care about your health, but he also has zero respect for your home and your boundaries. If that's how he treats you when you offer help, he's done this to himself. Not bring home junk food and not smoking in exchange for a roof is hardly a big ask. He made his choice.

I had my GB on Sept 8th in Federal Way, WA. My surgeon was GREAT and everything went really well. I was in the hospital overnight and was allowed to go home around noon the next day. The amount of Water that I had to drink in the hospital was pretty rough; I thought I was going to burst open I felt so full! The recovery from the procedure hasn't been as painful as I anticipated, which was a great relief. I expected it to feel similar post-op to my c-sections, which were pretty awful. BUT I wouldn't say that this came even close, being laproscopic. I still get a twinge at 1 incision when I cough or sneeze, but that's all. I had 6 tiny incisions total. I stepped on the scale once (yesterday) since surgery. Down a few already. I'm thrilled with this.
Good luck to all of you who have upcoming procedures.

Smanky reacted to Lincolnham Lincoln in Hello, I'm John
Good Morning. My name is John. I'm a 45 year old male and I'm 3 weeks post SADI-S surgery. My surgery went amazingly well. I had no real pain issues. I think I took pain meds 4 times in the hospital and haven't taken anything since coming home. I think I've been very fortunate as far as that is concerned. I'm still working on recognizing my bodies signals but it's coming along. I guess my biggest problem right now is being restless. I sleep fine at night but during the day I get antsy if I sit for more than about 45 minutes. Right now I'm working from home so I can get up and walk around the house or walk up and down the street a little. I'm more concerned about when I go back to the office. However, I can't complain at all. My surgery went well and I'm doing great post surgery.

Been a while since I have been on this forum and so much has changed-in a good way! I reached my (adjusted) goal weight. I went back to school. I have a new career (as a baiatric-focused personal trainer) and I'm excited about my future. Although lots has been derailed because of the virus, the accomplishments are still there and my business will thrive once the fitness industry is able to rebound. For now, I do my coaching virtually and keep up on my fitness by working out with my team via zoom. It's a crazy time but still full of possibilities! I'm so sorry some of your surgeries are being derailed- that is a tough pill to swallow I'm sure. I hope everyone stays healthy and strong. Be kind!
