    Type 2 and WLS

Ive had Type 2 Diabetes for some time now (many years) I have been super fortunate so Im not sure Im the best person to compare to. My Type 2 was mostly controlled by my intake of carbs and sugar. I was also very lucky if my A1C climbed or even my daily/weekly checks were elevated, I could control it by watching what I ate. I am not on any medications because my body reacts well to reducing carbs and sugars on my own. My highest A1C ever was 3 years ago and it was 9.6. I was mortified. My Dr wanted to prescribed me metformin which she did but I had a horrible reaction to it (Im allergic it seems) I asked my DR to hold off on giving me something else and to allow me to control it by my food intake and what I eat. She told me I had 3 months and if I didnt have significant improvement that I would need medication. 3 months later I had an A1C and it was 5.1 my DR was shocked as was I lol. It seems for me if I am on insulin or drugs for diabetes my sugars go insanely high and often times its worse than what I started with. I suppose this is why my DR allowed me to try to control it by food. My sugars are usually around 113-120 if I am behaving myself, my fasting sugar hovers around 141-160 in the morning

    My Day 1 photos

Kudos to you for being able to step out and take photos! I do not have mirrors in my house (on purpose) besides the medicine cabinet mirror. I did that years ago so I didnt have to see a full body view of myself. I now know that was a big mistake because I was unable to see myself and therefore when I became so overweight I did not see it firsthand. Until I allowed a group of co workers to include me in their picture their office pic took. It was then I got the full in your face view of what I looked like and how overweight I had become. I was mortified at it. It was awful! I couldnt believe I allowed myself to get to that unhealthy weight. Hopefully I will think better of myself after surgery and when the weight comes off. Good luck to you and your WLS
  10. My all liquid diet starts tomorrow! Mine appears to to be even more restrictive than yours (I will put an * by what my liquid diet consists of). Needless to say, I am not looking forward to this ha!

    BCBS Choice PPO of IL

The amount of requirements and perquisite's for insurance to cover can be C R A Z Y no matter what state or insurance company you have. I live and work in IL and I have Healthlink PPO. My insurance had no real perquisites per se other than I had to go to 2 seminars for the program. Now I cannot speak for everyone's journey but my own and this is what I came across. Although my insurance had no real requirements to be met, the Dr I chose sure did!! I started my first workshop on Oct 28, 21. Since I already knew my health insurance had little to know requirements I had it set in my head that the week after Christmas Id be scheduled for surgery WRONG lol. I met a nurse practitioner at my Drs office that was like hitting a brick wall LOL. She is awesome dont get me wrong but she set me straight real quick. Depending on the Dr there are loads of tests and other Drs you have to be cleared by first. I mistakenly thought it was my insurance that required alot of this and I couldnt understand why by Feb I still had not been cleared for surgery. This nurse politely informed me that my insurance is not the one that determines the surgery clearance but the DR, they are however the source of payment so a major point to but in my program I had to show I had no weight gain in 6 months/ April was my 6th month since the start. Once I weighed in and still had no weight gain they then sent for insurance approval and like Future Sleeve Diva above, I had approval very quickly and surgery was scheduled within days of that. It can be a long process for some but it will happen in due time. It can be frustrating to have to wait but it will come and when it does then you may start asking yourself if your ready for it lol. PS....I have not had any out of pocket yet except the initial consultation with the Dr ($35) I believe I had 1 other office visit charge of $35 but so far thats all

    May 2022 surgery?

Its my understanding its due the the BMI, the higher it is the more likely the 2 weeks liquid diet is required. I have a high BMI and I have to have all liquids for 2 weeks. I have seen some on here with higher BMI than me or the same and they are allowed a low calorie, low carb, lean protein meal. No such luck for me. Ultimately its down to what the surgeon doing the surgery wants. I too find alot of varying directives on this.... 🤔

    Help with protein

I just came across these online from Walmart (has to be shipped) and in my opinion they are EXPENSIVE for what they are but if you're having a hard time getting the protein in its an option I guess if you are unable to do the other suggestions by all the other posters. If you have a Kroger store near you they also have them there but they are in bulk (36 count) and only 1 flavor that I saw. They are called ProSouce Gelatein and there are several flavors besides these two listed below at Walmart online. The Ratio Protein yogurt is much cheaper priced at Walmart and has several flavors, it has 25g of protein. Also at Walmart online BariWise gelatin. Not sure of the other stats on this one but it has 15g of protein
  14. Can anyone walk me through their day of surgery? What all took place before and after the surgery (sleeve)? I was told by a nurse when I had my EGD done that they require 2 IVs (one in each arm) and she asked if I was aware of that and I said no. Her reply was they really should let people know this stuff so they arent surprised by it all. So just wondering if there are any other things that transpire that maybe was not disclosed ahead of time?

    Day Of Surgery

@ vikingbeast......wow! Only 1 day clear fluids.....😲 amazing how differently things can be doctor to doctor. I have a high BMI and I was told I have to have 2 full weeks of clear liquids before surgery. Now I know thats to help shrink the liver (plus to aid in further weight loss) but shocked yours was only 1 day lol....Im jealous 😜

    Day Of Surgery

Well here I thought I only had a few things left before surgery May 3rd....wrong lol. I still have the following to complete. 1. I have to meet with the Dietician about the clear liquid diet 2 weeks before surgery 2. Diabetic education (I have Type II, controlled by limiting carbs. Im a high normal and sometimes alittle over high normal) Im on no meds 3. Need appts to meet with Pharmacy and Anesthesiologists team 4. Final appt with the Dr doing surgery 5. Need a blood test for nicotine (I havent smoked in over 21 years but still have to do it) this will be the 3rd one 6. Covid Test 2 days before surgery Anyone else have this type of schedule before surgery can be done? And here I was worried about what happens on surgery day but looks like I have other areas to complete before worrying about surgery day ha!

    Carbonated drinks

I think Id be one of those people who would fall off the wagon if I went ahead and drank a diet coke post surgery like 6 months afterwards. Im actually hoping that I will dislike the diet coke like most say their tastes changes post surgery. That is the one thing I hope I dislike lol

    Sleeve with high BMI

For myself I chose to do the sleeve over bypass. Mainly because I have 3 co workers who have had bypass, 2 males and 1 female. The 2 males are gaining their weight back they lost. They eat and drink pretty much what they want and are overeating again, They both went from a 4XL to XL and Im pretty sure they are both back in to a 2XL now 2 yrs post bypass. The one female coworker has had horrible hair loss (I guess I should say thinning hair) she is early 30s and has had back to back babies after her bypass. I do not believe she is back to her pre bypass weight but shes probably put 50-60 lbs back on. She just had a 3rd baby not long ago and has already scheduled to have her bypass redone or relooked at (honestly Im not sure what they do when you put alot of your weight back on) any way she has something scheduled for Nov 2022. I have another co worker who had a sleeve. She has done exceptionally well, she's lost 95-105 lbs since March of last year. Im not sure she is at her goal weight but she may be. The only thing she complained about was being hydrated enough. I guess she just couldnt get her fluids in and she battled being dehydrated alot. I know both surgery's are tools and if you dont stick to it then the above scenario's can happen. I felt the sleeve could be the best option for me. I am satisfied with my decision and am currently pending surgery in about 3 weeks. I am alittle uneasy, nervous and maybe even alittle scared but I know thats my food addict self trying to talk me out of this decision. Im holding firm and I believe I can get through it God willing, with little to no complications or problems. In the long run I know this is the best for my health. I have kids I need to be here for....so I have to succeed!
