It is the best. I can never figure out why some of the non-working moms I've seen use formula. I suppose their could have been a problem, but I think it was more what they were brought up around.
My mother bottle fed my brother and I just because that was what was done in middle class America in the late 50s, early 60s. I breast fed because I was more read and less inhibited than my mother was/is. I'm also VERY lazy and could not stand the thought of warming a bottle. Hungry kid? Well into bed with you then!
I also kind of hate bottles after seeing 5 year old walking around with them. Yes, seriously.

Well I discussed the breastfeeding with Dr. Kim today and he didn't seemed phased by it. He just said I'd need to stay on prenatals, and absolutely make myself drink all the Water, because the water is key. And then his team would help me make the best choices on foods and meals to keep both baby and me safe and healthy. :] Glad to have a doctor who supports my decision!

I'm sure there will be set backs but after writing this thread, I searched for posts on similar situations and did find people who had succeeded at continuing to breastfeed. I know he's old enough to wean, but long ago I decided I wanted him to wean himself when he was ready. So I suppose I'll work very hard, pump a lot, try to get every bit of the liquids in and consume as much Protein as I'm able. I will ultimately hope for the best and see what the outcome is. ) as far as the medicines in my system, I'm not too worried, and wasn't when I wrote the post. It was more about if anyone had been in this situation and was successful even with the decrease in caloric intake.

I'm 6 months post-op tomorrow, and my little guy turns one of the 13th. We're still going strong re: nursing (3-4 times daily, and additional sessions on demand), and have no plans to wean anytime soon. Best of luck!

I had my surgery when I was still breastfeeding my 9 month old. It wasn't a problem at all. I had to pump and dump the first 24 hours after surgery, but then I was put on pain meds that were okay to take while breastfeeding. My husband actually brought her to me and I breastfed her while I was still in the hospital. You can find comfortable ways to hold your baby even with the incisions. Be extra vigilant getting in your Vitamins and Protein because baby will be taking lots of your nutrients, but I didn't have any problems. Don't stress out. You can do it! And you'll be giving your baby a much healthier mama to care for them!

Hi, I was just banded on June 28th. I have a baby, almost one year old who I still breast feed. I spoke with one of the anestesiologists. He said that the anesthesia is not in your milk once you no longer feel the effects of it. The same is with alchohol. If you have a drink and feel tipsy you should not breastfeed because the alcohol is in your milk at that time, but once you feel normal, then your milk is ok. He said to be really safe, wait for 24 hrs to feed your baby. That is what I did. I had Csections with both my babies and breastfed them immediately after I came out of the OR and while on pain meds in the hospital with no problems, and that was when they were newborns, so I would think if it was not safe, they would not have encouraged it.
Because I paid cash for the Lap Band, I was able to go first at 0730, and home by 1400. So I fed my little guy before I left for the hospital and then I started again the next morning. He is older than your little one, so only feeds in the morning and before bed, but I had some frozen milk just in case he seemed to need it. He was fine about it all though. In regards to supply, I think everyone is different and you won't know until you have the surgery yourself. I would recommend you talk to your surgeon and research for yourself and then decide on what makes you comfortable. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I love this thread. I know it's ancient but I feel it's really important so I'll put my experience in too.
I was sleeved 13 days ago. I am still nursing my 16 month old daughter perfectly well. I nurse 4-5x a day and she has had no complaints. I asked the staff at my clinic if I could continue to breastfeed during all my preop appts and they said no. That I "couldn't" while I was on the 2 week preop diet because it wouldn't be safe for baby. (It's just low calorie, high Protein food. Nothing unsafe there.)
They also said I couldn't because of the anesthesia. (I wasn't gonna nurse in the hospital anyways. In fact, I didn't even pump. I didn't get engorged until nearly 24 hrs after my surgery. I tried to hand express but I gave up quickly. My boobs don't like giving up milk for anything but baby.) I was released from the hospital 36 hrs after surgery and went straight to my baby and nursed perfectly fine.
They also said that I would get so few calories after surgery that I "wouldn't" be able to nurse. I have averaged 500 calories a day and she hasn't complained yet.
Don't wean unless you want to.
