  1. Well. I have had the most traumatic experience and I need to vent. I am almost 2 years post op RNY. December 15 I went to work as usual, by 230pm was in the ER with excruciating abdominal pain. That evening had emergency open abdominal surgery for the dreaded internal hernia / small bowel obstruction. Spent 5 nights in the hospital. Happy to be home for Christmas - but just a week later landed back in hospital for another partial small bowel obstruction! Thank god it resolved on it’s own. But now I am PARANOID to say the least. On blenderized food for 2 weeks… praying this is a one time deal. Looks like this happens in 8-10% of patients (lucky me). Any advice? Has this happened to anyone else?

  2. I had surgery RNY February 2021. 300 lbs before — I am now 132 lbs 5’7” which is way too skinny in my opinion. My BMI is 20 (getting REAL close to 19). Honestly have a hard time eating even 1400 calories a day, too full! Everyone tells me “eat more” but of course I can’t.

I have an appointment with dietician in a few weeks to assess. I want to stabilize, or gain back maybe 20 lbs but can’t seem to be able. Lost 10 lbs in the last 6 months so it’s a slow loss right now. But I am almost afraid to exercise for fear of losing more! Help!

  3. Hello everyone! I know this may sound crazy but I’m actually concerned about losing too much too fast! My surgery was February 24, 2021. In eight months I have lost 111 pounds. On New Year’s Day 2021 I weighed 295…. Current weight 173! Went from a size 20W/22W to an 8/10. The comments I’m getting now after eight months range from you’ve lost too much weight, to how much more weight can you possibly lose? It’s hard to explain to people that I’m just following the plan, I’m not hungry, and I feel like I can’t control this weight loss. If I’m only eight months postop can I expect to lose at least another 20 pounds by the first year? I know I sound insane but I just want to weight loss to stop and level out how long did it take for you guys to finally hit the bottom of the weight loss?

  4. I am in shock. Up to about 900 calories a day, still getting all of my Protein in Water in daily. Today is exactly 4 months post op… down 70 POUNDS! 😲

284 surgery day, today 214. This is insane. I knew I would lose weight having this done for my reflux, but I never imagined losing it this fast ! I wish I could eat a cheeseburger to slow it down LOL WHEW!!!

  5. This may seem like a strange question. I am just wondering if I need to make a special appointment with the bariatric psychologist on my team. I have lost now 60 pounds since the day of surgery RNY on February 24. Not quite 3 1/2 months yet. I feel like I’m losing weight too fast and I really don’t know how to cope with it. Everybody seems so excited and happy for me but I can’t wrap my brain around what’s happening. I did not do this for weight loss I did it for fixing severe Gerd so maybe that’s why I feel “weird”... I told my boyfriend that I just feel like I am in someone else’s body, lol 😂 The best way to explain this feeling is when something is too good to be true it almost feels skeptical - And you can’t let yourself be “happy”.... Has anybody else felt disbelief in the weight loss amount?!

Are you doing any exercise or walking? I am trying to decide if I should start doing my aerobic walking youtube videos yet. I am exactly 7 days post op today. My class notebook says to add moderate walking in. For 15 minutes per day in the 2nd week. I want to start but I am also still having pain in my abdomen so I am unsure what to do.

I have only been doing some very light walking. On my follow up this week which was five weeks they said I could start doing some weights. And just walk 30 minutes a day. Within the first two weeks I tried to walk and I would literally have to stop because I would get a sharp pain in my left flank abdomen that would bring me to my knees. It was my body telling me to chill out I was doing too much!! 😄 That pain disappeared by week three and I’ve been fine ever since

That’s awesome. No stalls for you?

Nope! Not yet. Very slow last 2 weeks so probably a “stall” - But I just keep following my plan and not really worrying about the scale. I am five weeks postop now and I have lost 41 pounds since the preop meal prepBut I just keep following my plan and not really worrying about the scale. I’m scheduled for bypass in a week. It’s a revision from a sleeve. I’m having bile reflux and that’s the primary reason I’m doing the surgery. I’ve had some pretty mixed feelings about it, but logically it is the best choice.

I went into this from the beginning for Roux-en-Y only to correct my reflux. Talk about some mixed emotions!!! I understand. I felt like I was being punished in order to cure my absolutely severe acid issue. But I couldn’t keep sleeping upright in a chair my whole life, am I esophagus already had erosion despite medicine! 😯 Tomorrow is 5 weeks post op. I have not had heartburn in five weeks and it almost seems like a dream. On top of that from starting my Meal Replacement two weeks before surgery until now I’ve lost 40 pounds. This past week my own daughter and boyfriend didn’t recognize me from a distance across the parking lot... So the weight loss is a win-win 😃

  9. I am three weeks postop and a few days. I am only taking one small blood pressure medicine, besides the anti-acid postop med. The nurse for my surgeon just informed me that I need to crush meds for up to a year. This seems like a ridiculously long time. Crushed blood pressure med taste disgusting no matter what I put it in.

And no my weight loss will most likely not rid me of the high blood pressure ☹️ Even when I was skinny I had no blood pressure issues until I had a near death experience with the pregnancy of my daughter. Hospitalize multiple times, HELLP syndrome, the works. She is 17.5 years old...And I’ve never been able to come off the blood pressure meds since.

I am doing the bypass for my Hiatal Hernia which caused GERD and Esophageal Spasms. Due to my weight the standard procedure is not an option. As my insurance coverage does not cover "weight loss surgery or medications" it was a 10 month multi appeal process to get my surgery approved.

I do hope your post surgery is going well! Mine is scheduled for March 10th.

Me too! Exactly Word for Word. I’ve had severe Gerd, esophageal spasms, large hiatal hernia, and food acid reflux at night despite being on some sort of anti-acid/PPI since I was 20. Being overweight I did not qualify for the fundilplication which was the standard surgical procedure. I work at mayo and when they suggested the gastric bypass I really was not interested. It took me 7 Months to finally make the decision and get it done. The reflux is gone, and the weight loss is a win-win. My surgery was 2/24/2021

  11. This is my very first post! I had RNY / hiatal hernia surgery for severe reflux due to my BMI. Gastric bypass was never my first choice but I figured it would be a win-win. Fix the reflux and lose weight! My surgery was February 24, 2021. Today is postop day four. I was down to 278 before surgery. Today I am 283!!!! I am in shock that eating 400 cal a day, 60 g of Protein (and I’ve been able to drink about 50 ounces of Water every day!) I still haven’t lost weight - in fact it’s gone up. I was in the hospital for two days because of severe pain and had a lot of IV fluids so this could be it but I don’t feel swollen? Did this happen to anybody immediately postop? 😬
