I love tofu and eat it often.

When cooking it there are a few different secrets to making it extra delicious....
    1. You can freeze it and then thaw it (some people suggest even doing this twice)...this changes the texture a bit and makes it more dense.
    2. I bought a tofu press and leave it over night to get the excess Water out so that it fries up nicer. This is what I do most often...less hassle.
    3. I LOVE pan frying it with garlic, salt, chili powder, and nutritional yeast. OMG it's so good! I add some sautéed mushrooms and spinach and yummmmmmm.

Whatever you do, it's important to squeeze some Water out of it before cooking it. If you don't want to spend money on a fancy tofu press (like I did because I'm addicted to kitchen gadgets) then just put it between two plates and put heavy things on top of it for the day.

It's important to flavor it with seasoning or make some kind of yummy sauce. There are plenty of great recipes out there for some healthy sauces! Mix it with some stir fried veggies and yum!

Thank you so much! This will really help me and give me more food options.

It's definitely the BREAD! I can't eat an Arby's sandwich or really ANY sandwich anymore. I just eat the meat or insides and throw away the bun. It "sticks" or something and I get what we call here in the forums "the foamies" where you throw up mucus (not food) and you feel totally full and choking. Your body is trying to tell you that you can't eat that food anymore.

It's weird though because I haven't had my surgery yet. But it does make sense about our bodies telling us we can't eat certain things anymore.

Having your throat close up with difficulty breathing is a very serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. It is life threatening. The second exposure can be much worse than the first. It might be worth having some allergy testing done to try to figure out exactly what food was responsible. Gluten intolerance does not usually result in anaphylaxis, but until you get actual testing you'll never know for sure. It would not be advisable to try to figure this out on your own by trying different foods to see if you get a reaction, because the next reaction could be much worse.

Thanks. I'll have a talk with my doctor. But after experiencing this, I'm definitely sticking to my diet and won't be straying from it again.

I'm not a doctor, but the first thing I thought about was a possible reaction to the bread after you hadn't eaten it for so long. Maybe you'd cleared it out of your system and that dose of bread did not sit well?

That's what I was thinking too, I've been eating gluten free stuff since I started dieting and since we found out that my son has a gluten allergy too.

  5. Has anyone done a 1200 calorie diet for like 2 months straight (eating healthier foods) and then cheated and ate something you haven't had since before your diet then had an allergic reaction to it? I cheated on Christmas day and then again yesterday and ended up having my throat close up on me, could hardly breathe. I didn't eat anything new that I've never eaten before.. just hadn't eaten those things for the past 2 months. I feel like my body is punishing me for cheating lol Thankfully though those situations made me decide I'm not cheating again.

  6. So update on my preop diet to lose 20 lbs by May 6th... I've already lost 30 lbs since I started dieting 20 days ago! I really didn't think it would be this easy. I've been staying at 1300 calories a day, drinking my whey isolate drinks and I've been taking these Keto pills too. I've started taking a multi Vitamin as well. I can't wait to see how much I lose by the time I meet my surgeon.

I eat tofu all the time. It doesn't really taste like anything, but some people have to get used to the texture. I usually marinate it so it gets some flavor for whatever dish I am making. A lot of people (and the traditional way) fry it to get it crispier. I oven bake, rather than fry. A couple of real easy ways to incorporate tofu:

    1) Scramble. Stir "fry" (sauté in broth or a little water) up your veggies, like onion, peppers, mushrooms, etc, and then crumble the tofu in. Add a little turmeric for color and it will look like scrambled eggs and the texture is also similar.

    2) Add tofu to smoothies or anything else you want creamy. I make my vegan cheese sauce, Salad Dressing, puddings, and veggie dip by incorporating silken tofu which gives a smooth, creamy texture.

Tofu is an excellent source of Protein, low fat, low carbs. I've had tofu in vegan restaurants that was amazingly like chicken in texture and flavor. I don't know how they do it, but it sure is yummy.

Thanks.. my aunt found some banana tofu, i guess it's supposed to be a dessert and I had to ask before I even went to try it lol

  8. I asked my doctor the other day about if I was getting too much Protein because I do 1 Protein Drink in the morning and 1 at night so i get like 150% protein a day.. he said I'd have to be getting way more protein then that to be too much. But I have lost 6 pounds in a week which is awesome (while being on a 1200 to 1300 calorie diet).

  9. So, I've been trying various calorie trackers and just came across one that has the actual nutrition label information for every food you eat! It's called Nutrionix Track and it's in the google playstore. I've been using calorie trackers for just over a week now and I have lost 6 lbs already (going from 310 to 304) and that's staying around 1300 calories a day. I'll definitely have the 20 lbs off by May 6th so I can get my surgery!

Hi, I usually use GENEPRO just for the texture and lack of extra taste, less calories and more Protein. I did try Iso (without the taste) but I quickly stocked up again on my GENEPRO. I'm working on adding more Protein but the last labs I had done, the Dr said to up them by 25% over the ones I was given because the bypass will lose some of the nutrients. My protein now is around 80-90. I get about 40 of that from genepro and the rest from what I eat.

Everyone is really different with these surgeries and if it works for you, you stick with that. As long as it's ok'd by your NUT and labs are ok, go with what you like.

Thanks. I didn't even think about getting labs done for the protein. On my app like yesterday it said i had 154% protein.. is that something i should be careful with? Can you have too much protein?

  11. Are you insulin dependent diabetic? I think this changes the game. I’m on an insulin pump, and the intermittent fasting doesn’t work well for me because of this. By 9-10am, my BS is in the 60’s and I need to eat. It’s annoying!

I would definitely check with your doctor about what would be the right fit diet wise. Especially since you need to lose 20lbs, (which you will!!!) but they can keep you on track for success!

As a diabetic, I’ve always found low carb to be my key. Now if I actually ate low carb for my life, I wouldn’t be overweight. A few of my friends who are also on pumps (but not really overweight) struggle with the same issues.

    you got this!!!!
I'm just on 1000 mg metformin in the mornings and then again at night. So many new things to get used to just to lose this weight.. and to learn. Have you had a bypass done already?
