Are you buying all your Vitamins separately? Because the bariatric Multivitamins HAVE Thiamine in them. I don't take B-Complex at all and I'm 9 months out and other than a slight Vitamin A deficiency in my 6 month labs (which was normal level in 9 month labs) and a potassium deficiency, my other Vitamin levels are all normal and I just take the multivitamins and Calcium and the occasional Vitamin A. Or were your Thiamine levels low in your pre-op labs and they wanted you to take extra?

I was told to get a vitamin b-complex with at least 12 mg of Thiamine. This is not an option. I will take that for the first 30 days and then they will change it to a Multivitamin, I think.

  2. Hi everyone!

Can anyone share with me what B-Complex Vitamin you chose to use after your surgery? My surgery is scheduled for November 23rd and I am working on getting things together. I did buy SOLARAY chewable B-Complex. It has 7.5 mg of Thiamine, which post surgery requires 12 mg. This means I would have to take 2 of them per day to get the required amount of Thiamine. Is there a vitamin out there that has the required amount of Thiamine (12mg) in one serving? If so, what kind is it and where did you get it? TIA

Hi! My day is Nov 30th and I'm anxious as well. Good luck to you! (I'm not a chef and making broth always looked waaaay harder to me than buying it. My plan is to find a great organic broth in a few "flavors" and to go with that.)

Hi! The closer the day gets the more anxious I become. So I completely understand. We will be okay though. This is a huge step that we have chosen to make in our lives. A new way of living. WE GOT THIS! The best of luck to you!

First, congrats on getting your surgery date.

Those ‘sweet’ chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, etc. flavoured shakes become old very quickly & you’ll crave something more savoury. That’s why the Soups & broths are key.

Once you’ve had your surgery, make sure you strain & purée the Soups & broths extremely well so they’re only liquid. You may find spicier soups hard to tolerate at first post surgery so take it slowly to begin while you’re healing.

BTW - I used to make my chocolate shakes on hot Water & pretend it was a hot chocolate. It took a lot of imagination - lol!

Good luck. It’s sooo worth it.

I am assuming that they will go over most of this with me again once I meet with the surgeon, which is today, but I love hearing from one's that have experienced it themselves.

I do like the idea of using hot Water with the shakes. I have got to learn to be more creative throughout this process.

    I am ready!

I made a few broths this week and here is how I did it.

I took a rotisserie chicken that was already cooked. Put it in a crockpot with whatever vegetables that I had (mushrooms, celery, carrots, onions) and then cooked it on low for 18 hours. The best broth every.

I did the same with a roast and it turned out amazing. My daughter was able to eat the chicken and roast after they were taken out and has enjoyed eating them.

That sounds really good and easy! I think I will try that! Thanks for sharing!

  6. I wish wine and Vodka were an option for me right now but I don't drink either one...LOL

Where is the best place to buy broths? Which ones do you like the best? I will look up how to make Asian broth. Don't think I have ever had it.

I am going to have to start experimenting. So far I have only tried the chocolate Protein Shakes. I know that will get old quick.

Thanks for welcoming me and sharing! Have a great day!

  7. Hi everyone! I just found out yesterday that my surgery date is November 23rd. OMG!! So excited and nervous at the same time. I am mostly nervous about the two week liquid diet. From what I understand (I will find out more tomorrow) it will be Protein Shake for Breakfast and lunch, lean and green for supper. Would anyone like to share their tips on how to get through these two weeks? I will be starting on November 9th. Thanks in advance!

There is also a LOT of pre-op diets out there that vary from surgeon to surgeon. When I had my lapband done in 2011, my diet was Protein Shakes for Breakfast and lunch and then for dinner I could have broth with veggies and a very small amount of noodles (I used buckwheat soba noodles). I did that for 2 weeks and it wasn't the worst thing in the world. dinner almost felt like a normal meal!

For my revision to sleeve in July, it was all liquids for 1 week. It was a bit rough, but again, after the first few days, it got easier and the time breezed by.

Some people here didn't even have to do a pre-op diet! So, depending on your surgeon, you might end up with a less strenuous pre-op diet! Fingers crossed for you!

I think my surgeon will require 2 weeks but not sure. I have already started trying to do Protein Shakes for at least one meal a day so that I will be used to them. Trying different kinds also. I have slowly cut out caffeine and carbonated drinks....almost there. Having a hard time with food choice though. There is so much I don't like. So trying to at least cut down on portions....not easy since I have not had surgery yet. Just trying different things to get prepared.

Any suggestions on what I will need the first 2 weeks post op? Getting ready!

Working during the pre-op diet will help keep your mind off of food! I think being home all day would be a lot harder!! Save the sick time for post-op!!

That's what I told my husband. You guys are awesome for sharing with me. I think I have made up my mind to give it a try at work.

And WOW! Look at your weight loss! Congratulations! You have done great!

The first 3-4 days of the pre-op diet are the worst ones. Your body and mind will rebel against you for the sudden drastic change. You may feel much more tired...you might have a very short temper...you may think that you've made a huge mistake. It's all your body trying to get you to break the diet. It's essentially a form of withdrawal. Once you get past the first few days, your body adjusts to the change and those "symptoms" will diminish greatly and it will be smoother sailing. It definitely won't be sunshine and unicorn farts for the rest of it, but it will be very manageable and you'll breeze through the rest of the pre-op diet.

Thank you so much for sharing. I know it will not be easy but knowing that the worst part will only last a couple of days makes me feel a little better. Hopefully my next appointment with the NP we will be scheduling to meet with the surgeon. I am ready to move on with the process! Thanks again! So glad I found group. It helps a lot!

Noooo definitely save that for post op instead you may have complication even minor ones like incisions reopening that will take more days

That makes sense. I had thought about that too. Just didn't know how bad I would feel during the pre op diet. I am not looking forward to that at all.....lol

Okay...so maybe I will try to work during the pre op. How did you feel during the pre op diet? Were you irritable or sick feeling? I work with EC children but for the most part it's very laid back.

  12. I am looking at my schedule for work to see when the best time would be for me to have my surgery. I work with the school system and we will be out for 2 weeks during Christmas. I only have 2 weeks sick time saved. So my dilemma is, Should I use my time to stay home while doing the pre op diet and then recover from surgery during our 2 week Christmas break? I am worried about the pre op diet but I know I can get through it. Any suggestions from anyone that has been through the pre op diet and what was your experience?
