I’m three years out now, but thanks for the reply. I use straws just fine. They still aren’t sure why I had so much gas immediately post op, but it passed and I'm fine now. But, i did want to say for anyone else newly post op and reading this - gas pumped into your chest cavity during surgery is different than intestinal gas. Walking is the best way to move thst gas out.

That doesn’t seem to be the case for me which is why this seems odd. I burp from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep, whether my stomach is empty or I’m sipping liquids. It started right away in the recovery room. So strange.

Did this ever get better / change? I’m 6 days post op RNY and have been belching CONSTANTLY since the recovery room. So much so the nurse in recovery and my main nurse commented on it.

I’ve had constant burping since surgery 6 days ago. My doctor doesn’t seem too overly concerned about it, but I’m curious if anyone else has had that experience, and did anything help?
Currently my PA had me stop taking any fluids (other than to take my pills) and I’m taking Gas-X.
I’m terrified of a leak, so any reassurance would be helpful

Went to ER after talking with my Dr. once I got to ER after blood work I was Being admitted and treated for Sepsis. After more testing I had a leak. I spent 6 days in the hospital had a Stent place in my stomach and the abscess removed. I’m certainly at home on day 3 with a TPN bag. Absolutely nothing by mouth and IV to keep me alive pretty much. I have a very long road to recovery.
How are you doing now?

Had mine on 8/25. Been home 4 days now and already so sick of Protein Shakes - too sickly sweet.
I feel pretty good as of now. I felt AWFUL right after, mostly due to not getting pain meds on schedule I think.
Coughing hurts like a b***h, didn’t anticipate that. Didn’t anticipate how much I would need to cough either, should have probably done my research on that one.
I haven’t weighed myself yet because I’m sure I’m still retaining fluids but I plan to do so on Tuesday.

I’m okay! The pain was waaaay worse than I anticipated, I’m not gonna lie. First 24 hours were rough. It’s slowly gotten better since then. I discharge in a few hours, so I’m hoping being at home helps some. The fire alarm keeps going off here in the middle of the night on top of being woken up frequently for vitals so I haven’t really slept well.
I’m also burping SO MUCH and that makes me a little nervous. I can’t tell what is gas just coming out, and what is signs of over filling. I’m terrified of getting a leak so it’s a fine line to walk to get enough but not too much. Thanks for asking!

I’m still in the hospital, just over 24 hours since surgery for me. I am not going to lie— I did NOT anticipate how much pain I would be in 😖. I’m feeling a little better today, but man yesterday and last night was rough. I’m so impressed by the people who are able to do this without anyone there with them - I honestly don’t know what I would have done yesterday if my bf hadn’t been with me to do everything I needed.

Same thing happened to me - I'm on the 25th now. Was originally scheduled for September 15th. I know it's only 2 weeks earlier but it feels much earlier to me!

My doctor called this morning and they moved me up to August 25th! That feels so soon!!! I'm ready, though!

A question for the DMV folks - have any of you found a therapist who specializes in food / food addiction to be helpful? My therapist I've gone to for the past 4 years is retiring at the end of this month. Since I need to start over I figured I'd try to find a specialist. Any recommendations would be great!

Thanks, @gr8ful1 - that's interesting to hear. I wonder why some folks stay 2 nights and some only 1?
