  1. Your funny.. one of my friends and I have a joke between us that we need a wife.. someone just like us who loves to clean and do the daily stuff so we could enjoy our kids more, and not have all the stress..

I actually cried through most of that video, especially the parts involving the young man and his family. They were of no help to him at all, even his mother. MY dad is 85 and when I came to work with him 4 yrs ago he constantly made comments about my weight, and even commented that he never saw me really overeating or binging on junk. Still he would make comments to me about losing weight and how I wasn't like that when I was young. I finally told him I had enough, he was not helping and made me feel horrible with his comments, and to leave my brother alone too. He rarely visits anymore and doesn't need to hear the same tirade from my father hes been hearing for 35 years. He is not a cruel or mean man by nature, but it is one subject that bothers him, mostly because our family health issues are overwhelming.

There really has to be a link somewhere with our genes and the way we are wired. My mothers mother was obese. I have never seen a picture of her where she wasn't. My aunts and uncles say she never overate, walked everywhere (born 1898) and even during the depression when food was scarce she still couldn't lose weight.. In 1952 my mother was pregnant with my 2nd oldest brother and my grandmother was determined to lose weight. She went to the doctor to get some help and figured she was paying for the advice so she would do twice as much as he wanted her to and eat even less. She got a cold and her immune system couldn't fight it and she died of pnemonia in 1953. My mother couldn't breast feed anymore and my brother has always had emotional problems and used to self medicate.. I am the youngest of 8. Three of us are morbidly obese, my sister has lost some because she has chrons but never goes under 220 even though she never eats more then a cup of food at a time. It is the part that scares me about the band.. getting it and not losing.. Being realistic, I definately eat more then a cup of food in a serving now, and hope that I won't be able to when the band is in. Does it really give you that full feeling? I ask because I don't have that feeling ever. It stopped after I had a hysterectomy in 2006. The only way I know I am really full is when I need to throw up.. that is bad. For the past month I have tried to be more self aware and have done fairly well. I ate more yesterday then I normally do, but my blood sugar was all over the place and I was shaky. I ate white bread for the first time in 3 weeks and it made me sick... that was an eye opener.

Sorry to ramble.. My head is spinning from this new bit of info. I will probably watch some of it again, and want to give the link to my nutritionist, shes really awesome. She is even going to go to a lap band seminar so she can better understand the process. My insurance will pay for me to keep seeing her monthly because she works for my lipid specialist, and they both want to help me. I have hereditary cholesterol problems,, I am taking Crestor and it is the first thing that has lowered it in 7 years.

Thanks again for posting the link!!

  2. I watched the video.. amazing stories. I was really interested in the stories around the nurse.. talking about Dr.s and nurses taking a history. Stop making suggestions about losing weight and find out why you are overweight.. The stories also touched on the fact that most of us have really tried to lose weight and have succeeded at it, we just can't continue with it and lose the battle. I am currently trying so hard to really control what I am eating, but having it be the main thing in my head everyday can and has made me crazy. I've gone almost a year before obsessing about it only to realize it consumed my waking and sleeping moments to a point where everything else didn't matter. I need the help of a lap band to take up some of the slack and help me control what I am eating.. Thanks for putting this up!
  3. Any information you can give the people in your life about your decision is a good thing. My family and friends see me as the cook, party planner. Even after I started talking about my interest or intentions with lap band they still make dumb comments about how I won't be able to cook any more, how if I didn't do all that stuff I wouldn't be overweight... hello? been struggling with this for 20 years people... I am going to watch the video, and probably email it to my family members... hehehe...

    Angry at myself!

don't beat yourself up for too long, we've all been there, banded or not!! I think summer is harder then the holidays in winter to stay on track.. BBQ's,, days at the lake, carnivals and fairs. At least on holidays there is a better chance of their being at least a few healthy things that don't contain mayo or grease!! Going to the gym is a huge undertaking for me.. I love it when I'm in to it, but as soon as I get distracted for a minute I lose my momentum. It is one of my goals to take on again when the kids get back to school at the end of august.. If I don't start to lose even a few pounds the doctors won't even consider giving me a date for surgery.. Hope today is better for you!!

    Maine Intro's

I am planning on going to the aug 8th support group, if not the one on the 20th. I would have gone to one this month but thought I had to have my first evalution before going, but when I called to verify that they had all my info, the nurse said I could go.. I am trying to be patient, but am getting anxious. My 7 siblings and I are all getting together the last week of sept, first of oct so it needs to be a month before or after that,, more then likely it will take even longer. I met Dr. Cobean at the seminar,, hes pretty conceded, but I wouldn't want a wishy washy doctor of any kind. I chose this program and didn't look at any others because the people I know who have had succesful surgery's went there, the ones who have problems are not following any program and are not being accountable for their actions.. I know someone who just had their band removed due to an ulcer,, from smoking! So scarey. I would not put myself through this physical and emotional stress just to screw it up,,, at least I hope not!! I don't drink,, even soda,, haven't smoked in years,, and am really sick of being overweight, less active, and not able to be myself.. let me know how things go?? Maybey we will meet sometime.. all the best to you Donna

    Got my tooth banded today

I'm pretty fortunate to have decent teeth, but the fillings I got in high school are falling out, and the one I left untreated needed a root canal... should have had it fixed when it happened...better late then never I guess. Anyways,, I had my tooth banded today,. pretty funny huh? I had the root canal done and the tooth had a crack in the center so the doc wanted to make sure it would be okay for a crown when its time so he banded it.. No pain yet, but the only soft food in my office today was mac and cheese,, will have to find something better later. I need some fillings replaced, and decided that what better time then when I am preparing for the new beeuutiful me...lol:thumbup:

Hey Erin.. so glad to see someone here who went through Casco Bay. How long did you have to wait for your first appt? I went to the seminar and they have all my paperwork, just waiting for the mail!! Also glad to hear you are happy with the program. I have talked to others who didn't like the whole process of it, and thought it was easier to go somewhere else. I am looking forward to it because I want to fix the reason I overeat so that I never do it again. Sounds like you have a great start to a new you.. congrats and best wishes

    Social issues

My family is the ones I have talked to about it and will be the most difficult to deal with, especially the ones who don't agree with it.. Just recently I was at a SIL's house, I told her I had already eaten but the kids might want something. She harrassed me about not eating with them and I ended taking it and was sick.. I haven't even had the surgery yet and they know how hard it is for me, it will be really crazy when I finally have it.

Who got thru losing a lot of weight without much saggy skin?

My mother lost 86 lbs from 56 to 60, her stomach didn't sag, but her face wrinkled. She thought if she had used good moisturizers when she was younger it would have made a lot of difference and I agree. I was a cosmetologist once, one of my many career exploits. I would suggest using good lotions as soon as your surgery is scheduled, or even sooner to help the elasticity. You can try the pinch test also on your hands, if it goes back to normal immediately you have good elasticity.. Hard to judge that sometimes if your overweight though because we have so much excess fat under the skin... exercise and moisturizers and prayers.. thats my intentions!!

    Long Term Lapbanders

Its a good question that I had been meaning to do some research on too.. This is the site I found LAP-BAND: Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery | Statistics The scales are in kg and BMI, I will have to look over it again to be able to read it,, I think there is other information in the side bar, but as far as I can tell this is the only other study except for the ones being done in the us right now..
  11. I am in a very distressing situation right now, lots of stress and anxiety which is my eating demon... I work with my dad who is 85, office is in his home next door to mine. He doesn't do much but the banking, answering the phone and signing the checks to pay the bills. He is very lucid for the most part unless he is not feeling well, which has been a lot lately due to back problems. My children come to work with me, age 8 and 11. I have never sent them to daycare and couldn't afford to anyways,, whole point of working for myself. my dillema: Another family member lives with my dad, with their teenager.. Teen has been going through a rough time and came to live here out of his mothers desperation. He was great for the first 4 months, but has since been in trouble, and has been caught convincing my kids to cover up for his bad behavior.. The latest thing has been convincing my 8 yr. old (and 11 yr old 2 wks ago) to walk to my house, after being told repeatedly they couldn't be there without me, and using our pc and tv.. My kids asked me if they could go get a game on one occasion and I could see them walk through the field to the house.. when they didn't come right back I called and told them to immediately. The last few days they have said they were going to play in the field.. after not seeing them for a short time I got worried and started looking for them.. They showed up in the field again so I went back inside. When my husband got home from work he noticed a cup ring on his pc desk and someone had deleted the history.. after some questioning and punishment for not being truthful it came out that they had been in the house numerous times and the teen had forced my child to go in even after he said he was in trouble.. the teen got into my husbands twisted tea which was in his office and out of reach for a reason, and his tobacco (he rolls his own,, wish he would quit).. after a conversation and freak out with teens father, he discovered the teen was breaking into his vehicle at night and taking his stuff that he had put in there to keep it out of reach. I could work from home, but my father doesn't like to be alone and needs me there if we have walk ins.. I have to take my kids but I don't want them around the teen and I can't be in the same room with them every minute, and they can't be in the office when I'm on the phone or have someone in.. and I have to work.. I've gone so far as to call some friends to see where their teens are working to try to find trouble maker a job!!! I do not want his bad behavior influencing my children, ,I love the teen very much but can't trust him at all anymore to do the right things around my kids. My son loves him and I don't want that to change but I have no idea how to make him understand that he can't follow him.. I have used some scare tactics, and have disciplined my son for not coming home and telling on the teen, or at least not going in the house himself. I need to be there for my dad and my job, but I can't let anyone manipulate my children and do things that could harm them.. any feedback would be great..

Priorities.. Elderly parent and young children

Thanks for the advice.. I was hoping business would have picked up this summer so that I could have afforded to send them to rec, but they jacked the prices sky high because of fuel costs.. I was out of work for most of 5 months with a broken leg and lost business last fall and winter and we are still playing catch up with bills. life is grand isn't it?? I am certainly going to have to organize their days even more, and not allow them in "his" part of the house without me in the room. My dad stays in the office so the kids can hang in his living room when their not outside..(in my line of vision) I am going to sit down with him next week and pick his brain to see if I can get anything out of him as to where his head is, and let him no how much damage he is causing for everyone especially my kids. My husband told him clearly that if he went in our house when again he would call the police. I have no idea if that scared him or not. I was hoping his father would at least make him apologize to us and my son but that has not happened yet.

Priorities.. Elderly parent and young children

He lives with his dad too.. sorry I didn't make that clear. Its really sad because we have all been so excited to get to know him because his mom took him away when he was 5. He is funny and can be a great kid. I have voiced to his father that I think he is desperate for attention and bored to death. The thing I don't understand is why he would think it was okay to go in my house when I told him repeatedly that he couldn't.. Most teens I am privy to be around regularly seem to think their actions should just be accepted as ok, and that there shouldn't be consequences. I'm an old school parent, mayby that is the difference with my kids. My son accepted his punishment at 8 and completely understood why he was in trouble.. and felt remorse the teen has that dumb look on his face.. My dad is clueless to the whole ordeal at the moment and I don't want to worry him, and my sister on the other side of us has changed her locks.. she had the same issue with teen last month.. arghhh

    My Family - Need Advice

One thing I have learned about family drama is that no matter what you decided you can't go back on it once the event or whatever is over. If you choose not to go, don't regret it later. Call whoever is throwing the event, tell them you won't be attending, don't make excuses.. It is your body, mind and decision.. Send grandma a card and well wishes in the mail and pat yourself on the back for not letting them eat at your soul with their stupidness.... I am following this advice myself at the moment. I was invited to a party with some old friends, I didn't want to go because we are in different places in our lives and I don't want the drama. I had a list of excuses and realized how stupid I sounded saying them in my head..I called and said I would try to make it but had other responsibilities, have a wonderful time.. I have not heard from any of them, but feel really good that I didn't grovel, or go to the party with bad gut feelings and have something happen,, like my broken leg last year...

Friendly Observation part 1 of 2

I saw your picks so read you blogs.. good points, and congrats on your success. I loved the part about sticking with the yoga, it is a great accomplishment. I haven't been banded yet, but am encouraged by the positive post too. I seem to get more negative responses from my personal interactions and need to hear the better side here. I was very skeptical at first because one of my first posts I stated how hard I had tried with dieting and calorie counting and was replied with "this isn't going to work for you if your not losing by cutting calories,, or some such response... I felt I had to defend myself and replied with something stupid (not mean) and embarrassed myself when I should have ignored the comment. My reasons for lapband are not just about what it says on the scale, but about my health in general.. Thanks for the posts, and best wishes to you

I am this close to boycotting Target

In the past year the whole "buying clothes" had really been a nightmare.. Some would call the plus sizes "old lady clothes", but even the older ladies I know wouldn't buy them.. I swear the plus size designers made a point of making hideous clothing to make us stand out even more.. Floral tops?? flourescent striped shorts?? short sleeve shirts so short they get caught in your arm pits!!! There will always be overweight people in the world who are that way for a million different reasons as we see in here.. shopping should not be such a nightmare.

    Anxiety AFTER surgery?

I'm sorry your feeling that way, its horrible to be on the edge like that for any length of time. Make sure you keep up communications about it with you doctor so that it doesn't go on any longer then it needs to. Non professional guess would be that its been too long for it to be anesthia. Are you taking a new multi Vitamin?? Take note of when it feels the worst, and how long it lasts. I have suffered with this since I was a teenager,, I am just now getting a grip on it.. suggestions: slow deep breathing, in and out 3 times,, take a break and try it again (do to much and you get dizzy lol) try doing something that makes you feel calm,, reading, sewing, walking whatever your interest are. Life has changed for you and it is terrifying I'm sure. We all have huge expectations of how we want things to be, but it will be hard work to get there. Hope you are feeling better soon..
  18. Thanks kfgates, I will check it out!! I bought some carnation ones to try and my kids ended up drinking them all.. they substituted them for their usual bagel so I didn't complain, and think I will get them some when school starts. My daughter is entering puberty and has been on a junk food craze lately and I'm trying to keep it out of the house!! We are going to revamp some old recipes this week using applesauce in place of most of oil or butter, and try some things with whole wheat flour.. I tried making Cookies with splenda but most didn't taste very good and were thrown away after a week.. I did well again yesterday with saying no to seconds, my hubby was even amazed.. I didn't even have a snack, and when I started to get the urge it was 10 pm so I went to bed and read.. Hopefully the weekend will go well.. Hope yours is grand!
  19. I am going to Portland, called yesterday because I hadn't heard from them and wanted to make sure they had everything they needed.. they did, I just haven't been assigned any appointments yet,, arghhh Does anyone know who else besides Cosco sells the EAS Protein mix?? I had heard of it before but don't recall seeing it,, we only have wally world,, no cosco
  20. My weight fluctuates 3-5 lbs a day also, and has always done that. I have to force myself not to weigh in everyday. I can understand why you are right now with worries about the weigh in for surgery. My doctor is known for canceling surgery due to a weight gain.. My last appointment with my regular dietician I had gained 3 lbs and was devastated. Hang in there and watch your sodium intake,, I went back to salt sense and can already see a difference,,, (and it tastes good)
  21. You look fabulous and are an inspiration..

    The best for you always

  22. LOL,, they are creep looking. I have had over 100 of them put in and taken out.. it really doesn't hurt, the tape they used hurt sooo much more and caused a blistering infection on two different occasions.. When the doc removed them from my leg he said "NOW YOU KNOW HOW A PIECE OF PAPER FEELS" .. WEIRDO...
  23. I would do what your doctor told you to do. There must be a reason that you are more at risk for clots. I had to wear them after I broke my leg for more then a month for lack of movement.. If they are too tight and its necessary they can get you ones that fit better. I had a family history of heart disease, that was my surgeons reasoning.
  24. I am fearful that I will have to have my gallbladder out also because it is not functioning properly. I am currently not having pain issues and hope they don't start before my date is sceduled. I really hope it works out for you and that they can bump you up the list!! thoughts and prayers are with you

    Another step towards my goal

Well I completed another task on my TO-DO LIST today.. I had a root canal done in a tooth that has had problems for a very long time. I haven't been chewing properly and now I will be able to again. I was very fortunate to have a good doctor and have not had any pain issues as of yet.. The weather here has been crazy and I have been struggling to get in enough walking. My son and I went yesterday and had to cut it short because it started to rain and thunder. We haven't been able to go swimming everyday either which was my goal.. I just reread my surgery and clinic information again and I am going to be required to lose 15 lbs even though my insurance doesn't think it is necessary.. I am really struggling with that, gained a pound according to the nutritionists scale. I believe I was retaining fluids that day because my hands were swollen,, and think is was the pizza sauce we ate the night before. I will try harder for the next two weeks and hope there is some change. It would be devestating to have my surgery cancelled because of weight gain. I wish the doctors had a better idea of what is going on with me, I don't want to fail.:frown:
