  1. That's dreadful! I'm so sorry to hear that. I was so excited when I got my surgery date and I went into it without any fear. I know how you must feel.

But please stay on your diet. I was put on a diet the day I got my surgery date and I didn't cheat at all. I found my weight loss before surgery was FASTER than my weight loss after surgery! Go figure!

Good luck my friend.... you WILL have this surgery. Meantime, D-I-E-T :) You have to diet after surgery anyway!!

    Best,

    Grace

  2. I'm very sorry that happened to you Georgette. I know how excited I was as my surgery date approached (February 26). I got in just under the wire.

My thoughts are with you but please don't stop dieting. I found that I lost weight at a faster pace when I started to diet before my surgery. These are difficult times, and you really need to think about the ramifications. What if you had some problem/s after surgery. It's hard to get to appointments these days.....best to wait until things settle down a bit.

I know.... EASY FOR ME TO SAY!!! but I DO understand :( so sorry!!

    Hugs,

    Grace

  3. Hello all:

I had a bad experience night before last and all day yesterday. After my evening dinner on Sunday I was very uncomfortable. My stomach was actually distended and felt like a hard rock. I thought it would just go away but it persisted into Monday morning and afternoon. This was so uncomfortable in that if I sat up I could feel my stomach protruding. I was somewhat worried and spoke with my doctor. That did me no good except it allayed a lot of fear that something really serious was going on. Finally I thought of taking some Gas-X (Simethicone) 125 mgs (2 capsules). It did not clear it up completely but it helped a GREAT DEAL. You can take two (2) capsules with meals and before bed. I'm going to take it for today and see what happens.

I just wanted to share this since it helped me so much!!

    Best to all,

    Grace

  4. I think I had too much for supper last evening. I had 5 ounces of greek yogurt and about 1/2 hour later I had a Protein Shake. About 1/2 hour after that my stomach felt too full. It felt hard and distended. That happened to be once before about a week ago and it went away fairly quickly. However I woke up this morning still feeling like my stomach was too full (again hard and distended). I have a call into the doctor but haven't heard back yet. Has anyone ever felt this way?

  5. Yes. I had the body aches too. Also in the center of my chest. I had a heart attack many years ago so I was alarmed at first but they did an EKG and my heart was fine. The pain traveled from the center of my chest all around and into my back. They gave me Tylenol and I was told to take it when I got home. After a few days it was gone, gone, gone.

I found the first few days really difficult. I never expected all the pain I had to endure and the nausea.

  6. I'm so sorry you have to wait longer, BUT....on the UP side, you have more time to lose weight before surgery on the "shrink the liver" diet. I'm told that doing this makes the surgeon's job easier....and that of course is a good thing.

I went through the same experience as you as I recovered from the sleeve - I was way ahead of the curve in terms of what, and how much, I could eat. Here's the thing - it takes a long time for your stomach to heal completely - not days, but weeks, even months (it is a major amputation if you think about it). So it may not be sending you the signals you need to stop eating. As someone who's sleeve failed, partly because after 6 months, and especially after a year, I could a proper dinner plate of food again (at least 2 cups), I would say follow your dietary guidelines. If it says half a cup, eat half a cup. How many calories (and other macros) are you allowed in a day? Are you staying within them? Just because you CAN eat more, doesn't mean you SHOULD. The guidelines are there to help us get into the habit of Portion Control, because the honeymoon period of easy weight loss/no hunger only happens for 6-18 months (depending on the person). After that, if you overeat, you may regain, even with healthy foods, as it may encourage you into the same bad habits you had before surgery. Also, how long is it taking you to eat? If it's more than 30 minutes, then you are definitely overeating. When are you drinking liquids? If it's too soon from eating it could make the food slide faster through your stomach making it easier to eat more. I'd also be worried about the asparagus - it seems too early to be eating such a fibrous and low Protein vegetable. They are really hard to digest and can form clumps in your stomach, especially early on.

In any event, I'm not trying to make you feel bad about this - as I said at the beginning, I went through exactly the same thing after my sleeve, and I had the belief that the surgeon made it too big which is why I could eat so much. However, on my recent revision surgery, my (new) surgeon said that the sleeve was perfect and small, so I know that my weight regain had less to do with my stomach, and more to do with me. Some of us can eat more, and don't feel pain (others are the complete opposite). In that case, you have to be vigilant about what, and how much, you are putting into your body.

Thank you ever so much for your informative and comprehensive response to my inquiry. I appreciate this more than you know. Just FYI I am not taking in more than 700-800 calories daily. It seems to me that even without surgery I should be losing weight on that caloric intake.

I will be MUCH MORE VIGILENT concerning the amount of food I consume at meals. I will give you an example of what I have to eat daily:

BREAKFAST: High Protein Shake = 160 calories

LUNCH: Amy's Tomato Bisque Soup = 240 calories

DINNER: One source of Protein (Yogurt/veggie burger/cottage cheese) usually about 240 calories

My Snacks are diet Jello for ten calories per serving - 2 servings at the most

Sugarless lollipops for 17 calories each for about 34 calories in a day

I'm down about 9 pounds from my date of surgery but have been stalled for about 5 days now.

I don't think I can try harder than I am right now. Maybe I'm wrong but doesn't it come down to calorie intake?

Thank you again. I DO APPRECIATE THIS!

    My best,

    Grace

  8. I am 3 weeks out from a gastric sleeve procedure. I'm not sure if I am eating too much. It seems to me that most folks who have the sleeve done are unable to eat as much as I do. I don't strive to eat a lot, but I just happens and I never feel full. I have not felt full - not once. Last night I had a pretty good sized veggie burger and about 10 stalks of asparagus. I would have hoped to be full after about half of that. How does this seem to you folks who have had gastric sleeve?

    Many thanks

    Grace

My nutritionist told me I should stay clear of caffeine after my surgery because while I’m healing it will cause extreme stomach pain. How long after surgery did you wait to have caffeine again? I don’t have tons but like one cup of coffee. Even Decaf would be fine but even Decaf has some caffeine.

I had a gastric sleeve three weeks ago. I have to confess I have been in serious caffeine withdrawal so I went for the coffee a week ago and I am tolerating it fine. I also drink watered down diet coke which I make flat (adding Water will flatten it). No problems.

  10. Thank you again Lisa.

I feel a bit mystified inasmuch as if I stay on 700 - 800 calories a day I would surely lose weight anyway. This does make me wonder about the wisdom of this surgery. I haven't figured that out yet. I should change my name to "Bewildered in Boston." :)

    Take care.

    my best,

    Grace

  11. Hi Lisa:

Thanks for responding to my post. You're about a week ahead of me. If I'm counting only post-op weight, I'm down only ten pounds which is an average of about 3 pounds a week. One worry that I have is that I don't get "full". I'm always thinking of what I can eat next, just like before my operation. I hope that if I tried to eat too much my stomach would stop me, but not so far. I'm ingesting about 700 - 800 calories daily. Overall, I feel really good, Very, very good as a matter of fact but like you, I'm feeling like I'm coming down with a cold now. I surely hope it's just a cold and not that miserable virus.

I live in Boston very near to MassGeneral. I worked there for 23 years - retired now....

With the exception of your cold I sure hope all is going well for you and continues to do so.

    My best,

    Grace

  12. Hi Folks:

I have no doubt that there are lots of you out there who have recently had a gastric sleeve or bypass in the Boston area.

My sleeve was done on February 26 at MassGeneral by Denise Gee.

I feel very well. Maybe too well. I find that I don't feel "full" as some describe here. Actually I don't remember feeling full since I was a little kid and that was a very long time ago. I'm just about 3 weeks out from surgery and I'm down 10 pounds. Doesn't seem like much but when you average it out it's about 3 pounds a week so I guess that's not bad. I waiting for the "big weight drop" but right not it's not feeling like it's going to happen!

Please drop me a note .... I would love to compare notes.

    Grace

  13. Thanks so much for your message. Yes, my daughter had it done a year ago and she said that she went through the same thing.....really slow loss at first.

I know what you mean about sinking your teeth into some real food. I see ads on TV for burgers and such and it's so appealing. I honestly think I could eat something like that but I'm sure not going to try yet :) Off to the yogurt!!
