  1. Every doctor is different. For example, I could not have muscle milk or slim fast b/c of the fat content. They also advised over 20-25 grams of Protein, in the form of a supplement, was enough and more than that was a waste. (I'm not saying that is true, just what I was told..there seems to be many opinions on the matter!)

Best thing to do is listen to your nutritionist and dr., and if they don't guide you, do what you think is best.

I use a whey Protein myself. chocolate mixed with skim milk, provides 20 grams of protein, plus the protein from milk. I don't mind it, but I love milk! Good luck!

  2. How's it going, midwestchickie? Its great to see others who have the same doc as I do. Are you coming to the WL support group picnic this saturday? If you need info on it, just let me know.

Doing good, thanks! Feeling much better this week. You know with the pre-op diet, I did wonderful...hungry...but stuck right with it, due to the whole liver thing, but now I'm just dying for some real food! I don't want sweets or anything..I want some meat! I want some taters! Something with substance already! I have till next Wed., when I'll go to the next phase and can have some chicken, fish, cheese...mushy like stuff.

I'll have to admit, I had two cheetos today...I let them mostly dissolve in my mouth, I probably sucked on them till they didn't exist! I'm jealous of people that don't have 4 weeks of post op diet, it seems like forever. How did you do with it? My dh was traveling this week, and I was sooo tempted to have something last night, but I'm so glad I didn't. i would have felt horrible about *cheating*

Sounds like you are very busy! I knew a boy at MU who was from Trenton...I can't think of his name now, but he was so sweet and of course had a girlfriend back in Trenton...I always think of him when I see that town name! (I think you are the one from Trenton?? heheh)

No, I'm not going to the picnic, we have company this weekend, and I'm in Lee's Summit, so it's a bit of a drive for me.

  3. I had to do a 10 day liquid diet and I have 2 weeks post op, of what I call *modified* liquids..I get 8oz of Protein supplement and I can have Soup (has to be able to go through a straw...hello pureed onion soup!) and I can have oatmeal/malt o meal. Then I graduate to 2 weeks of mushy food.

I lost about 15 pounds in 10 days, and now I'm on day 16 (four days post op) and I'm only down 17. Gained 5 right after surgery.

Every doctor has different programs, I don't believe it makes one better than the other...I do wonder about folks who are given no direction at all.

Maybe it's just me, but I got this little feeling reading this thread that this whole process is some sort of competition? No one has to prove anything, we all got here b/c we eat too much. If I thought I could live on liquids alone, I wouldn't have had surgery. As it stands, since it's required by my doc, I do it. Otherwise, I would be face first in a plate of Pasta.

We all do the best we can, and I'm sure everyone thinks their doctor is looking out for their best good...good luck to all.

  4. Dear chickie.

Thanks for the respone.I do not have the shoulder painbut my diaphram was tight yesterday but isn't so bad today.I went to the office today to use the computor.I also gained 5lbs,but it is coming off today.I am glad you can eat yogurt and malt o meal.My wife had the surgery a year ago so i knew about the gas.sometimes being around her really cleans out the sinus.Let me know how you are doing.

    Brian

Cleans out the sinusus..haha. I'm on day 4 now...feeling better today. I'm sure this is a little tmi, but just to pass along to others reading, I had sort of *forgot* that it had been over 6 days since going poopie....I wasn't having any of your normal indications that I needed to go and I figured I was eating much, so no big deal. Well, I guess my body rebelled last night and all of a sudden, I did have to go...which is good. I felt sooooo much better after that it seemed strange to me that I wasn't even thinking that I should need to go. So...moral to the story...well...I'm not really sure....go poopie!

Haven't had any of the referred gas pain, yay!

In my Quest for some tasty fare, I got some panera onion Soup to take home yesterday.....I blended it (onions) in my food processor and boy...was it yummy. My desire for some *real* food is growing with each day, but I'm hanging in there! Don't want to ruin anything.

Hope everyone is doing good today.

  5. I have a great endocrinologist, who seems to be up to date on the latest with thyroid issues. (obviosuly listen to your own dr. not me! :bolt: ) But, I called right before my surgery, and they want me to get my bloodwork done every couple months during the time I am losing weight. He said that as I shrink my medication will have to be adjusted and that I may become a little hyperthyroid as the process goes along.

It's important when you are first diagnosed, too, to keep getting bloodwork until you find the level that is good for you. My suggestion is to find a good endo who will listen to you and work for you...initially I was letting my regular doc treat me and he was fine with leaving my levels elevated because they were "in the range" he thought was good.

  6. Hi! I'm doing good too. Gas is passing, as it should! hehe and my insides feel a little queasy if I start doing too much...but I'm able to walk around the house, do laundry, etc. My babysitters left this morning, but i look fwd to having my dh all weekend to help with the 3 kids. My back seems to get a little stiff if I've been on my feet for 15 min or more...but they may have to do with stooping over a tad or laying in bed so much.

glad to hear everyone is doing good!!!

  7. wow...this is quite a thread. I was just banded with the realize band two days ago, and was looking for infomation on the website, which the rockband seems to think is useless and won't be used.

Now I have an icky feeling like I made some bad choice. I don't quite understand someone spending so much time bashing a medical device that many people on this board have used. A better way to present your obvious superior knowledge would be to state your case for the lap band and shut up. People are getting defensive b/c you are acting like a complete consedescending jerk. (myself included) I find your posts to be nothing more than copy/paste *bullshit* as you put it, that you found using google, or maybe wiki.

So with all your obvious smartness and such, you have done nothing but made me upset and to think you are a jerk. Well done. Had you just posted a link and left well enough alone, I wouldn't have thought much about it..instead you start going on and on about J and J and packaging and stats you don't back up.:)

  8. Hi..

Had my sx on the 24th. Doing good. Havne't felt much like eating, but I'm drinking my Protein and had pudding yesterday. Today I had malt o meal...4 oz....yum! Best thing I've had in weeks! I don't really feel like my incisions hurt, but my insides feel funny if I'm up and about too much. I've been getting up and puttering around the house through the day. I've been *tooting* up a storm, which I guess is better than holding it in? I don't want to have the shoulder pain...

fyi...somthing my anes. doctor said to me...the shoulder pain is from the co2 they pump into your body to lift things up so they can work on you. He said that the pain is actually your diaphram, but that your brain can't process that, and so your brain says, "ohhh! I must be feeling pain in my shoulder!" Helped me understand better. I'd never read a good explanation of why it happens.

I still feel pretty wiped out. Ohhh, and I gained 5 pounds after surgery! I guess this is normal?

  9. I'd have to say I respectfully disagree about the part of having a special section of the menu. Restuarants cannot cater to every single group who feel they are wronged by what is offered. The choice is yours not to eat there.

When I take my 4 yo to a chinese buffet, he eats maybe two pieces of chicken...not hardly worth 5 bucks or whatever, but I knew when I picked this place that he would not eat 5 bucks worth of food.

I understand your frustration though! :crying:

  10. I'm on day 7/10 of my preop diet...I've done great so far! No cheating! I get just two Protein Shakes (400 cals) and broth/jello/popsicles. It was hard at first, but I'm making it. Today, my 7th day, I feel i hit a wall! Total lack of energy! I don't feel like doing anything.....I suppose this would be normal after days of not eating?? I've never not ate for 7 days! Ha! I almost feel like I'm in a depressive funk...I'm not really craving food anymore, or really feel hungry. I just want to lay in bed till surgery on Wed. ?? Anyone else feel like that?

  11. flower,

I didn't mean to sound snooty or anything! hehe. I'm sure she did say that though...and maybe she did have a jerk manager hovering over her...but seriously, in a fast paced rest. a manager shouldn't have time to be looking over shoulders and such. Things can get so hectic, I can't imagine anyone knowing who ordered what.

But that is not really the point... I'm just trying to keep myself busy while I starve to death on my pre op diet!! Just talking about going out to eat makes me want drool!!:drool:

  12. Be tough! Be tough!!! I 100% know what you are going through...as do many people...but I was just there 3 days ago.

I'm on day 6 and it really has got a bit better. My constant headache is easing up and I don't feel too hungry, or I don't notice it anymore...until I see food or prepare food. That still sucks bad.

I'm on a very strict preop diet too..I'm only allowed 16 oz of Protein supplement, which gives me 400 cals and then I get broth and sf jello/popcicles...So I'm guessing I'm having about 500-600 cals a day for 10 days.

I've tried to stay out of the kitchen and I have been going to bed early with tylenol pm...just so I don't think of food.

Honestly, it does seem a bit better for me on day 5 and now day 6.

  13. I'm not post op, but I just asked the same question and I concluded that I wanted

    1. close up of my face, front and side

    2. front, side, behind in panties/bra

    3. front, side, behind in tight shirt/shorts

I posted my befores in shorts/shirt on my blog if you want to see what I did. I didn't post my face pics yet.....ugh..they look so gross. Personally, I like the same clothes so I can make a good comparison, but I also like the idea of one normal pics of me in my regular clothes at each picture taking interval. Can't decide how often I will take them...either monthly, or every 20 pounds???? Hmmm....

    good luck!

  14. Hi all you pre-op dieters,

Day 5 now. I actually don't feel hungry right now. Not to be gross...but this liquid diet does a number on your poopie. How can I say this delicately? There isn't much of it, but when the urge hits, it's like a squirt of fudge and that is it. Kind of gross, but an observation I made...hehehe.

I'm down 10 pounds in 4 days. That is kind of exciting, but I know most of it was probably 10 pounds of sh*t (literally and figuratively) in my intestines from everything I ate the days before.

Yesterday, I took my 3 yo to the park. I stopped to get him a happy meal and I got an iced tea. I must have asked him 20 times, "are you done with those fries" b/c I wanted to get them in the trash fast! I'm quite proud of myself. I made mac and cheese last night and I had to test the macaroni, so I bit it and spit it out...that is dedication!

We can do this my friends!

  15. slim n tn...

I had to go bck and read the thread and cracked up at your seinfeld reference...we love seinfeld!! "whats the deal with those Protein shakes???" (another bad attempt at a seinfeld-ism)

I'm trying to keep myself busy. I just packed the kids lunch for tommorow and man ohh man...what I wouldn't do for just a nibble of ham and cheese sandwhich...or 3 or 8...

So you must be having surgery the 25th? Well, it will be over before we know it. I actually studied my preop diet and I'm already so excited that in addition to my liquids I get now, I can have sf pudding, yogurt and cream of wheat/oatmeal!!!! Yay baby! I just want a different taste in my mouth at this point. Even the broth is not tasting too good anymore!!:)

  16. I'm on day 4 out of 10 days preop liquids...then I have 14 days after. I can say, not a morsal of food has passed my lips, but it has been hard. I think of food all day. I take tylenol pm around 8 just to get to sleep faster. For me, it's all about passing the time till Sept. 24. I stay at home with the kids, so I hve to find things to keep me busy.

I'm allowed 16 oz of Protein supplement. (whey Protein is my choice)

Tastes like skim choc milk, I don't mind it. I'm allowed to mix that with skim milk, so that gives me a total of 400 cals.

I can have broth, sf Jello and sf popsicles too. Ohh, and non calorie, non caffiene/carbonated drinks such as koolaid with splenda. Thats it.

I'm starving. I've lost 8 pounds since Sunday...(3 total days!) Of course, I gorged on Saturday night....

I will do this....you can do it too...I was very scared, but I'm more scared of how it will make me feel mentally and pyschologically if I cheat right now.

    Good luck!

  17. I always look at the kids menu and if it had something on it that looks good to me I ask if I can order it and I've not been turned down yet. I don't say why, I simply ask (except at a buffet of course where a reason would be called for). If it doesn't have anything I like on it, I order from the regular menu but I'd rather order the smaller portion for the smaller price than deal with leftovers. That being said, if it's the restaurant's policy to not allow that and they POLITELY turn me down I can handle it. Golden Corral told me they had changed their policy and I wasn't allowed to pay the child price but they were very rude and mocking about it, that made me mad. If they had kindly and discreetly explained to me that it was against policy I would have been fine. At least for me it all lies in how it's communicated.

    Nicely put.

  18. Sheesh...here is what I think....not tha anyone cares..

    1. No, they do not have to give a childs entree.

    2. No, you are not disabled. I too, worked with developmentally disabled people, and we wouldn't order a childs plate for them.

    3. I've worked as a waitress at many establishments, and never would have blinked an eye at an adult ordering off childs menu, and if anyone thinks that the waitstaff would get "in trouble" that is a little off base. Do you really think the manager is checking the tickets and looking to see if the appropriate number of kids are present? Give me a break.

    4. Should they accomodate? Yes...it's good business to make your customers happy, and besides, does anyone think it's going to start a trend of adults ordering processed nuggets all over the world? Doubtful.

Most people want what is offered on the regular menu.

    5. A table full of bandsters that order kids meals and tip like crap, probably tipped like crap when they ate the jumbo plate 2 years ago. Some people just don't get it.

Ohhh, and I'm on day 1 of my liquid diet, and I think I'm getting grumpy.:thumbup:
