  1. According to my surgeon, despite there being a few more “connections” involved, the bypass is not that dissimilar from the sleeve procedure. The amount of time in surgery is the same, the risks are the same, the recovery time is the same etc. I just went through the bypass on 12/2. Speaking for myself, I had really bad GERD prior to surgery and absolutely none since!

  2. A few weeks post-op, I would have a sudden, stabbing pain in my pectoral region when I would move certain ways (especially when bending over to pick something up off of the floor). I read that these types of issues can be related to certain Vitamin deficiencies. I swapped to a different Multivitamin and the issue was gone within four days and has not resurfaced. Might be worth discussing with your doctor.

  3. My best guess is that they will have you arrive as normal for surgery and make a determination at that time. I'd be willing to bet that they choose to err on the side of caution and reschedule if you still have things like:

    • Fever
    • Coughing
    • Throat inflammation
    • Lungs not perfectly clear

I was not sick going into surgery, but came down with pneumonia a few weeks later (I'm told this was likely a side effect of the anesthesia). That was no fun! These are big surgeries. Don't fret if the doc delays you a little while to get over this cold. Another week or two is no big deal in the grand scheme of things if it puts you in a better position for success.

  4. Here in Texas, I order off of the children's menu when possible for the smaller portion, but (believe it or not) the children's menu is normally filled with even less healthy options than the regular menu! So far, I have not run into any issues with restaurants accommodating my needs and I almost always take a box to go. (I do not have the bariatric patient ID card).

  5. I struggled with the low energy issue as well. I'm 8 weeks out and I'm just now starting to really feel like myself again. I went back to work after a week and I think that was probably a mistake. The surgery is no joke and I should have taken more time off. Shortly after returning to work, I came down with pneumonia, which was a side effect of the anesthesia I'm told. Like you, I initially had trouble getting the fluids down and ended up needing IV fluids as a result. I'm now able to drink more without too much discomfort. It does get better! As of right now, I'm feeling MUCH better but I'm in a stall that has lasted over three weeks. That is frustrating!

I should add, my experience may be a little different due to having RNY GB instead of VSG.

Agree. You should be focusing on getting at least 60g of Protein at this point. If you are doing that, you shouldn't have enough room left for many carbs. At least that how it was for me for the first several months.

Doc told me to shoot for 90-100 grams of Protein. The vast majority of that is coming from protein supplements (I use GENEPRO powder) but I'm getting the rest from food. For example, lunch today was 2.5 oz of grilled Mahi Mahi and about 4 small bites of a baked potato. All in all I've had 17g of carbs so far today.

  7. My surgeon didn’t make a recommendation. 30 or 40grams isn’t much but that may be a good number for me to stick with.  I have wondered why these types of specifics were not laid out for me by either the surgeon or nutritionist.  I guess that’s standard from the sound of it...

I had my operation on 4 Dec 19 and found the weight loss stalls at times too. I have found that doing 3 higher intensity type exercises a week keeps things moving along. I swim a kilometer at the local pool pushing myself so I am out of breath. I also log my foods daily in an app so I can keep an eye on any unnecessary calories sneaking in.

Those are good ideas. I'm currently increasing my exercise and I've been logging my food all along. I'm also cutting back on carbs - I may have been getting a few too many in an effort to increase my caloric intake (Doc wanted me to consume more calories than I had been getting through week 5).

  9. I guess I can understand why some would not want to broadcast the fact that they've undergone a bariatric procedure, but I haven't kept mine a secret. Anyone who knows me knows that I've struggled with weight. For me, I don't see the harm in folks knowing that I'm working to get it under control. I haven't encountered any negativity - Mostly just friends and coworkers offering words of encouragement!

I was wondering how these are working for everyone. Good bad thoughts comments please

Hi there! I was initially having trouble getting my chewable vitamins down and discovered Patch MD. I ordered a month supply of the Multivitamin and utilized it for around two weeks. During my next followup with the surgeon, I mentioned that I was using patch MD. She recommended that I switch to a different multivitamin based on what she'd seen on lab work for other patients. I cannot personally speak to the effectiveness because I never had any bloodwork done while using the patch but I have seen several reviews that said that it is effective. I went ahead and switched back to an oral multivitamin at the direction of my doctor (capsule). Just figured I'd pass along what I was told :)

  11. Hello everyone. I had RNY gastric bypass on 12/2/19. Initially, I lost around 50 pounds in the first 5 weeks. During that time, I was only consuming 3-500 calories per day (just wasnt hungry). On my follow up visit with the surgeon, she expressed concern that I was not getting enough calories and wanted me to shoot for 1100 per day. I have done my best to increase my caloric intake but it has required me to eat higher calorie food in order to do so (not what I would consider to be diet food at all). I have been able to get up to an average of around 800-900 calories per day now. Since increasing my calories, I have nearly stopped losing weight. Over the last three weeks+ I have only lost 5 pounds which is very frustrating after seeing that first 50 pounds fall off so quickly. The last 7 days, my weight hasn’t moved at all. Am I doing something wrong or is this just a long stall that should go away soon?
