    Day 2 Postop

I had VSG May 28. Sippy cup I bought was for age 12 months. Has a valve inside which requires sucking. But remove the valve you have just 3 small holes. See photo with white valve removed. When tipped up, you can barely suck and get no air with small sip. I marked ounces with sharpie on outside. I bought at Walmart but can also get on Amazon. I am adding Isopure ZERO unflavored. One scoop is 25g protein. I usually add half scoop to 8 oz warm Water. Don't add to hot or Protein Powder will lump. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. I have been on CPAP/BiPAP for 25 years. It is not uncomfortable. The modern masks are so much better. The mask is most important. If it isn't comfortable, you will hate it. I believe CPAP saved my life. But my OSA is very severe with AHI of 74. One of my sisters died suddenly at age 50. The only thing coroner could find was enlarged left ventricle likely from OSA. This enlargement likely caused a heart lethal arrhythmia. AHI of 5.5 is barely diagnostic. It could likely be worse on a second test or better. Did you have any REM sleep during study? REM sleep is when apnea is worse. If you didn't have any REM sleep, your AHI is probably higher than 5.5. Sleep studies monitor a single night's sleep which is likely not typical for you at all. AHI is like blood pressure. It varies alot depending on circumstances. And trying to sleep "normally" in strange bed with all those wires attached could have prevented much meaningful sleep. Post Op

Postop Day 2: I was given Rx for chewable simethicone (GasX). Really got things rumbling and my belly doesn't feel like tight balloon this AM. Found heating pad helped a lot. Using baby sippy cup with suck valve removed. Really stops guzzling.
  4. Making my hospital packing bag list. This is what I have on my list. Any more suggestions? BiPAP Losartan BP med bottle (anesthesia decides if I take before surgery) Lubricating mouth spray Breath spray Cell phone & charger Tablet & charger Power strip (AC + USB) Powerbank (in case can't use strip) Robe Microfleece blanket
  5. Many US doctors are being encouraged to not use narcotic meds in hospital or Rx to go home. Opioid addiction crisis is really bad in some states. My state monitors all controlled substances carefully and doctors can get in trouble with medical board of licensure if pattern of prescribing too often. If surgeons do send postop patient home with narcotic pain med, they are only allowed to give 3 day supply. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Pre workout supplements

Any one tried those 20g Protein shots GELATEIN20? Small cup of Jello with 20g protein on Amazon. Any better than making your own with jello and unflavored whey powder?
  7. Thought about taking my Crocs. My feet have slimmed with 35 pound weight loss so must wear socks with them. Cannot find nonslip socks to buy locally but hospital usually gives a pair. I have painful bone spur in heel so Crocs would make walking a lot easier on hard surface.
  8. I had really bad experience with Neurontin (gabapentine). Took it for a month for neuropathy after bulging spinal disk. I wet the bed every night on Neurontin but didn't now it was the med until one month followup with doc. He said that is a known side effect. Had good conversation with bariatric center RN about my concerns about both Celebrex and Neurontin. He made not in my electronic medical record and said to be sure I tell my surgeon before. RN suggested they could give me Toradol (ketorolac). Good immediate postop pain and nonnarcotic. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Celebrate Vitamins

You can get a sample pack from Celebrate directly for $9.95. All the flavors of multi plus iron & calcium chews and B12 melt. Also some protein shake mixes. The $9.95 is applied towards purchase so sample pack is free if you buy. The chewable multivitamins have decent taste but I am preop so cannot say if I will like them AFTER. 10. I understand some of the issues with some postop pain meds delaying ability to get up and ambulate due to drowsiness and unsteadiness on feet. Also, respiratory depression since I have severe sleep apnea for decades treated by BiPAP. But uncontrolled pain also discourages patients from getting up due to anticipated pain. So balancing pain versus side effects of pain meds is necessary on individualized basis. There is no "one plan fits all" when it comes to postop pain. I don't think I will need narcotics since most of the pain will be caused by retained gas and no pain med really deals with that. My center uses an app MyChart which allows patients to email providers. I received a note from my surgeon after my preop appointment which said if I had questions, email him via app. I sent him a message about the center's postop pain plan which uses two meds I have previously had bad reactions. Hopefully he will respond to assauge my concerns. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. My gallbadder was removed laparoscopically and I had no pain at all. Was sent home with Rx for hydrocodon but never even filled it. That was more than 10 years ago. But incisions were very small and removing gallbladder involves minimal cutting. So maybe I'll be ok. Don't remember having any gas issues. The education class said specifically that not using narcotic was because opioid addiction problems in my state. When I had severe hip pain from goat bursitis, the ER gave me an IM injection of nonnarcotic pain med because I was allowed to drive myself home. So there must be options. 12. Yes it doesn't . Couldn't read small print without glasses. But no different than most protein shakes or artificial flavorings like MIO or CRYSTAL LIGHT. I like the clear coloring and very light flavor. So ok with me. Sucrulose doesn't affect blood sugar. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. Found something I really like to drink in place of water. Nestle Splash has zero everything. The flavor is not sweet or strong. Just perfect for me. Has 4 flavors: mandarin orange, berry, lemon and grape. 6-pack at Walmart $1.79 and 3 six packs $5 at Kroger. It is purified water with just a little fruit flavor. Clear like water, no color. This is so much better than adding Mio or Crystal Light because has no sweetener and flavor very light. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

  15. After waiting two months for Coronavirus pandemic, so excited to get Surgery Date, May 28. I start two week diet May 15. Been a long wait. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. I have small hiatal hernia discovered on EGD. My surgeon says he routine repairs them whether sleeve or bypass. Did you ask if he could repair it? Mine is "small" but surgeon says outcomes are always better when hernia is repaired. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. I take 7 tablets every day. Concerned about being able to swallow that many whole. Bought pill crusher but going to experiment before surgery on how to get all that powder down. Anyone try putting powder in bites of jello or broth? Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. So far diet has been easy. I have two protein shakes and one frozen dinner like Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice. Less than 50g carbs per day and 1000 calories. Allowed snacks like hardboiled egg, deli meat or string cheese. One breakfast I mixed protein shake with sugar-free pudding mix. I wasn't hungry for hours. Been logging my food, water and excercise. I've been eating 100+ g protein and 100+ oz liquid. I usually end day with about 800 calories for the day and 40g carbs. Lost 3 pounds since Friday. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Diabetes

Many type II diabetics "cured" by weight loss surgery. I was pre-diabetic in Dec with fasting blood sugar 115 and A1C 6.2. After diet and losing 20 pounds in prep for surgery, no longer pre-diabetic. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    "Bariatric" Vitamins

You can take iron with calcium as long as calcium is 300mg or less. Once a day bariatric vitamins have a common flaw. Your body can't absorb more than 500 mg of calcium at a time. Calcium should be taken in 3 or 4 times throughout the day. I am presurgery so taking Citracal Slo Release (1200 mg Calcium & 1000 IU D3). But after surgery cannot take Slo Release so exploring calcium options. Chewables very chalky. I like Bariatric FUSION which you take 4 times a day with both iron and 300 mg calcium. One big problem with FUSION is it is missing Vitamin K. I could buy K2 drops from Amazon to add it to FUSION. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. I was excited to have surgery date of May 28. Saw my surgeon this AM. Surgery moved to June 4. shucks. But maybe good as my first weekend after surgery would have been over Memorial Day holiday weekend. I would have gone home Friday. So surgeon would be hard to contact if anything went wrong day or two after surgery. So I am okay with another delay. Always trying to see benefit from another delay. 23. This Bariatric Multivitamin 45 on Amazon has everything but calcium and only costs $19.99 per month. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. My bariatric center sells Fusion vitamins. You have to take 4 times a day but don't need to buy calcium/D3. It has everything you need in one chewable tablet. Any of you tried this? I think it's about $25 for one month's supply (120). Seems cheaper than buying multivitamin plus calcium chews.
  25. Looks like CELEBRATE and ADVANCED EA both have Folate (folic acid) at 800 IU. Then take calcium citrate separate. But more expensive that way. Cannot find data on BariatricPal vitamins and dosages. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
