  1. Texas has stopped all elective surgeries due to high hospitalizations due to Covid-19. I suspect other states with big resurgence of cases will do the same, Hope it doesn't happen to any of you but be prepared. Your surgery date may get postponed. 2. Approximately 40% of patients struggle with their weight loss rate, or metabolic rate, after bariatric surgery, and at least 30% previously had or develop a low metabolic rate after surgery. Metabolic rate is the speed at which calories are burned. Explains why I easily lost weight before surgery but have only lost 3 pounds since. Also, my age decreases BMR. I am switching to caffienated coffee to help boost my BMR. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Talked with dietitian on the phone. She says I am not eating enough calories (never have been told to eat MORE in my life). Told me to aim for 800 per day. I started caffeinated coffee 2 days ago and lost 2 pounds. She said ok for coffee as I am getting 80-90oz fluids a day. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    MyFitnessPal database hacked

Yes, the breach was a couple years back but the hacked data is now available on the dark net. Could be on a number of servers in the dark net. I quit MyFitnessPal after using just one week. Didn't fulfill my needs. Don't even know if account still active but I'm not going to try to login. Just leave it be. I don't think there is much private data there. 5. I received notice that my email and password was found on "dark net" from my credit card company. The data was hacked from MyFitnessPal. Those of you that use MyFitnessPal should be careful with this data leak. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

  7. Still not losing weight one month out. You can clearly see day of surgery and then 4 weeks of no meaningful weight loss. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. Focus on words like always, never which in most people are never true. I've lived a lifetime on psych meds and weekly psychotherapy. Shocked my psychologist when MMPI-2 revealed NO mental health problems at all. Wow. I just answered honestly and knew that always and never statements aren't true for almost all people. There are stupid, outdated questions like wanting to be a librarian (don't most of use use web for library), enjoy reading newspaper articles (most never read newspaper anymore). Some are repeated to see if you are answering questions the same (gives reliability score). Don't sweat it. Just answer what is true for you within past 6 months. 9. Research papers have documented the fact that psychiatric problems (unless schizophrenia or other psychotic history) ARE NOT a factor in success/failure in bariatric surgery. The big issue is food addiction and if you tend to eat when stressed, bored, depressed or manic. I don't know why so many using psychiatric history to deny surgery when literature is clear it is not relevant. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Something seems fishy...

They just calculated 60% excess weight as goal. I am only 5'1" and 160 pounds after surgery and months of weight loss is ridiculous to me. I think they just give you average excess weight for goal to keep expectations realistic for average person. But some of us aren't ever happy with average anything. We are motivated to do our best. Like, would you be happy graduating with 2.5 GPA? Or average income when you could do a lot better with job that paid more for same position. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. Intermittent fasting not very good for preop. I don't know any surgeon who would recommend it. There are some very good tasting protein shakes. Have you tried Fairlife Nutrition Chocolate. Tastes just like chocolate milk. I really hated Premiere Protein shakes and most powder-based shakes. You will need lots of protein (60-80g per day) after surgery so best you find one you like and start using now. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. I have faithfully logged all my intake. I live alone so nothing in my house to cheat on. Been meeting my protein and water requirements from day one. Still drinking protein shakes twice a day to get my protein goal. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. I don't see where to put my profile. My highest weight was 245. BMI 44. My weight on day of surgery was 211. My weight on postop visit was 200. Seemed to take a long time to make 199. For 3 weeks I have been between 196-198. I have lost inches down to size 16 jeans from size 20. I had VSG on May 28 so one month out. I lost 11 pounds within 10 days of surgery. But then stalled with caloric intake 400-500 calories per day. I have been lifting 3 lbs weights to build up biceps hoping to minimize bat wings. I easily lost 30 pounds before surgery. And have been walking 30 minutes 4 times a week. Been frustrating to see plus 1 lbs and minus 1 pound for 3 weeks. I just started soft stage yesterday after 2 weeks pureed stage.
  14. You can make zucchini "pasta". Thinly sliced with mandolin makes it easy. Make your own tomato sauce unless you can find some sugar-free. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gas Pain!!!

Try using a heating pad. It helps and is comforting. Did you receive the little breathing toy you blow in and keep the little ball up (spirometer)? Using it frequently requires you to take deep breath before blowing. This pulls your diaphragm down and helps moves the gas around. It is really supposed to prevent pneumonia but found this suggestion elsewhere and found this helpful. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    I want to succeed

Gas is part of everyone's experience. Some get over it faster than others. We are all different. Some of the things you can do to help is walk around often, take Gas_X or baby drops for colic. A heating pad can be comforting. Did you get a little breathing toy where you blow to make little ball stay up (spirometer). Blowing into this frequently will bring your diaphragm down when you take deep breath before you blow. This helps move the gas around. I found it quite helpful. As far as your care providers being seemingly uncaring, you are not describing anything unusual. Do as much as you can to help yourself. Then providers won't get the impression you will be chronic problem. There are a number of protein shakes that are lactose free. If lactose is bothering you, try Fairlife Nutrition or Premiere Protein as premixed. I understand your fear of vomiting. Almost makes me faint. But if you are very careful, sipping slowly and stop before you feel full, it is less likely you will feel nauseous or vomit. I'm sorry you lack support. You might find this forum helpful. 18. If your doctor doesn't want you to lose anymore weight, you need to listen to her advice. Your all or nothing thinking could suggest you have developed an unhealthy mindset about starch (bread, pasta, rice). Complex carbohydrates are an important source of delayed energy. Simple carbs give you quick energy but complex carbs breakdown more slowly and will maintain energy longer. One approach is to limit your diet to whole grain bread, pasta and nonwhite rice. These contain important vitamins and especially phytonutrients you can't get in a pill or other foods. If you are not crazy about whole grain carbs, that might help you with your fear that you might start eating too much. You have been phenomenal by losing all excess weight. I am confident you can approach starch in moderation. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. No drinking 30 minutes before or during meal has specifically been explained that liquid will delay the feeling of satiety or fullness. Then you will consume more food/liquid than your stomach can handle and discomfort will happen. I take my meds/pills with my protein shake so no need for additional liquid needed. Drinking liquids within 30 minutes after meal usually is on top of an already full stomach once eating other than liquid food. I did that once and immediately experienced felt nauseous and vomited with immediate relief of nausea and discomfort. And I didn't vomit all contents of stomach but just the liquid I just drank. 21. I am 3 weeks postop VSG. I lost 40 pounds before surgery and about 6 pounds first week after surgery. So frustrated that I weight just goes up and and down by about a pound but not lost anything in last two weeks. I am religiously logging all food and water. I am supposed to be on pureed food but have gone back to just three protein shakes a day (150 cal each) and nothing else but water. I am walking my dog 30 minutes every day which I couldn't do before due to low back pain. With increased activity and low intake of calories why am I not losing any weight? Mystery to me. There is no food in house except protein shakes so I am obviously not cheating. I heard of "three week stall" but this started one week postop. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. My surgeon says no more than 50g of TOTAL CARBS per day. So if I eat high fiber foods like beans, I cannot use net carbs to stay under 50g total carbs per day. I do not understand why total carbs instead of net carbs because I really cannot eat anything high fiber without going over 50g total carbs. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. Did some research and now understand the physiology of "3 week stall." Most of us were on liver shrink diets two weeks before surgery. Our livers were depleted of glycogen stores and excess omentum fat. So my liver is rebuilding liver back to normal functioning size. So I need to get back on my pureed diet with more calories to finish up this process and start losing weight again. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Just kidding. Not available in humans yet. Researchers experimented with mice. They had baby mice born in "bubble" and these mice had virtually no bacteria (good or bad) in microbiome (gut). No matter how much they ate, they were unable to gain any weight. They also had mice where the hormone leptein was blocked. Leptein is what tells your brain you have satiety and quit eating. These mice without leptein available ate nonstop and became extremely obese. Third group were totally normal mice, eating appropriately and maintaining normal weight. First experiment, they took fecal material from normal mice and transplanted to mice unable to gain weight. The skinny mice now had healthy microbiome and gained and maintained weight like normal mice. But what impressed me was the second experiment. They transplanted feces from normal mice to the morbidly obese mice that couldn't stop eating. The obese mice lost weight down to normal weight. If possible in humans, I could have had fecal transplant from thin person instead of having most of my stomach removed. SHUCKS. There is tons of research being done on microbiome and obesity. Scientists are discovering possible causes of obesity relating to the bacteria in their gut. We aren't to the point yet of identifying which bacteria are involved out of trillions in gut (either missing in gut or releasing a bad byproduct that causes cascade of problems in the body leading to metabolic syndrome). I find this fascinating. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. "...data in both animal models and humans suggest that the effects of artificial sweeteners may contribute to metabolic syndrome and the obesity epidemic. Artificial sweeteners appear to change the host microbiome, lead to decreased satiety, and alter glucose homeostasis, and are associated with increased caloric consumption and weight gain." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29159583/ Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
