Do and do not eat foods.

I really don't understand the low fat emphasis except the higher calories content. Reasonable amount of fat is necessary to absorb fat soluble Vitamins, help with dry skin and deal with constipation. Even saturated fat isn't bad (hangover from decades of misinformation about cholesterol). Many people are successfully losing weight on ketogenic diet which is very high fat, low carb. Most of us are high Protein, low carb with limited fat. I suspect high protein, medium fat, limited carb would be best post WLS diet from my own research. I have been high protein (at least 80g), limited fat, limited carb (less than 50g total carbs which includes fiber). In the beginning, no caffiene, no carbonated beverages, no raw fruit, avoid fruit with seeds. Stats: 5'1", age 67, female. Highest weight: 245. BMI 41. Surgery Date: May 28, 2020. Weight at surgery: 211.

    Exercise

I found some beginners low impact cardio on YouTube, all standing up. I try to do most mornings for 30 minutes indoors. I started doing some exercises I found for bat wing, tricep strengthening using resistance bands and 3 pound barbells. Stats: 5'1", age 67, female. Highest weight: 245. BMI 41. Surgery Date: May 28, 2020. Weight at surgery: 211.
  3. My bariatric center says goal for every VSG patient is 60% of excess weight. If you do better than that long-term, then great. But they discourage unrealistic self-set goals. Will set up a lot of patients for disappointing results. The average weight loss for VSG over thousands worldwide is 60% excess weight. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    HAIR LOSS!!! UGH!!!

When did you start Biotin? Also, how much Protein is your goal. My bariatric center says 80g per day. I have been taking 10,000 mcg Biotin since day after surgery and 90g Protein per day. Am only 8 weeks postop so probably have a month yet to see how bad my Hair loss will be. I heard limiting hair washing and brushing as much as possible will help from pulling out hair. Don't think Biotin Shampoo will be helpful as biotin not absorbed through skin. It is just part of the process. Do the best you can and know that it will be over in couple months. 5. HUGE disappointment. First ingredient is Maltitol. Last ingredient is Stevia. So mostly sugar alcohol with one drop of Stevia. Didn't buy. Always read label. So they put Stevia in big letters on package but barely any. Mostly sugar alcohol. Instead I bought 85% Cacao Dark chocolate Bar. 3 squares is one serving. 170 calories, 5g Dietary Fiber, 4g added sugar, 3g Protein and 15g fat. So one square just 1/3 of that. So about 53 calories, 1.3g sugar. I can live with that.
  6. You can get a sample pack of Celebrate for $9.95. If you buy in the future, the $9.95 applies to future purchase so sample is free. I ordered the sample pack and glad I did. I didn't like any of the pills/chews. First month I took FUSION Bariatric chewables which is $25 per month at my bariatric center. I received 3-month supply of BARIATRIC ADVANTAGE Multi EA and calcium chewables. I received cinnamon calcium which I really like. The multi EA is strawberry which also palatable. These are quite expensive so will likely return to FUSION when free ones are gone.
  7. The chart is AVERAGE and very few people are actually average. On the bell curve, that is like "C" grade in class. There will people who achieve and others underachieve. It just gives a ballpark estimate of what average person might expect based on thousands of patients having VSG. It does not take into account many factors like age, gender, BMI, length of time overweight, genetics, metabolism, medications, physical/health limitations, social issues, marital status, etc. Everyone's journey will be different even under strict laboratory contol. So this isn't a chart to be used to grade anyone. Outside strict laboratory controls, few will follow this table. Some live alone, some have family eating regular meals, some have to prepare meals for family but must eat differently. Some are working full time with the added stress of rearing children. Some have enormously stressful lives while others are pretty comfortable most days. Some have existing physical/health issues that will not go away even with weight loss. Some have financial pressures. Hope you get the idea. Adult identical twins won't lose at same rate. The first three months after surgery is the most unpredictible. Some will recover quickly and have no problems progressing to regular food. Some will struggle with constant nausea, problems progressing to regular food, difficulty swallowing, pain in chest after each swallow. The same goes for end result and ability to maintain. No one should be judged for any reason. We all had a reason we needed surgery and surgery itself is just a tool, not a cure. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Wellbutrin

I was on Wellbutrin XL prior to surgery and no change after surgery. I was not required to crush any of my pills after surgery. I had VSG. This may be different if Bypass done. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. I am 8 weeks postop and everything tastes just like it was before. Protein shakes not too sweet. Nothing tastes funny. Maybe I'm just lucky. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Fiber Supplements in Meals

My surgeon said no fiber supplements. Swells up in stomach and can interfere with absorbing nutrients. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. 3 FAIRLIFE protein shakes = 90g protein GELATEIN20 = 20g Broth with scoop of unflavored Isopure = 30g
  12. Big day for me. I've seemingly stuck 190-191 for week and a half. Then today, finally 189.2. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Which phase is okay to have smoothies?

My surgeon says no fruit first 3 months after surgery. Part of the problem is the carbs. Raw fruit is also difficult to digest. A banana by itself is 27g carbs. I am only allowed 50g total carbs per day. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Sent home after 7 hours!

I use Renpho scale as well. Really like the extra data I get and automatic graph on weight loss. I put my cellphone on floor beside because with Otterbox case it adds 7 oz.
  15. I was 39.5 BMI day of surgery
  16. WEIRD. My doc said 300 Extended release just fine. I had VSG. Apparently extended release not good for bypass. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. Any of you add Protein Powder to sugar-free pudding? Does pudding set? One or two scoops of whey isolate? ? I am going to try pre-op to see if it works and if taste is tolerable.
  18. 10,000 steps by fitness watch is deceiving you. I did two loads of laundry, folded and put everything away. All the hand motion gave me 12,000 steps. I have a friend who drives a big rig all day. He gets 30,000 steps just from steering and shifting. You need to be doing exercise for at least 30 minutes, fast enough to get your heart rate up and some huffing and puffing. I am just 7 weeks postop and my surgeon says 180 minutes of exercise a week. That is 30 minutes six times a week but would be better to do 60 minutes three times a week. I walk my dog but he's little and so I don't get my heart rate up enough. Will start walking without dog so I can walk faster and longer. But it is grueling hot with summer heat and humidity. Would like to get an exercycle for indoors. Will check out PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS.
  19. I've been on Wellbutrin for a number of years. Didn't need to stop for surgery and still taking. Wellbutrin doesn't usually cause weight gain. I also take Klonopin which worries me that it might interfere with weight loss. But without it, my mood gets unstable. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    After Surgery Things

A heating pad really helps when you have all that gas inside postop. So get one if you don't have one. Also, get a really good body lotion. Your skin will be really dry. I bought some essential oils and diffuser. Found eucalyptus, lemon grass and peppermint quite soothing. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I was on medically supervised diet for 5 months before surgery. I lost 30 pounds easily. That is why weight loss soooooo slow from day one postop has been frustrating. But I remind myself that my BMI has dropped from 44 to 36.5 and weight down from 245 to 191. I am off two blood pressure meds and off statin. My blood sugar and A1C are normal so am no longer pre-diabetic. So overall, I am a lot healthier now regardless of what the scale says. I couldn't walk for exercise before surgery because severe low back pain and sciatica. Now I can walk all I want. And my jean size is now 16 (no plus sizes anymore). People who start out with much higher BMI and a lot more weight tend to lose a lot faster. And we are all different genetically and metabolically. So as long as I am doing what I'm supposed to, the scale doesn't matter right now. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. I was getting 500-600 calories a day. Dietitian said up to 800 calories. I think that is too much this early postop. Surgeon said 180 minutes of exercise per week. Been walking my dog for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week and 40 minutes mowing the lawn. So I getting step up platform to exercise indoors. It has been 93 degrees 90% humidity so outdoors intolerable. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. The problem with fiber is it swells up and fills small stomach/pouch. Interferes with nutrient absorption. Bypass patients have very short section of small intestines for absorbing nutrients. So fiber will encase food making it hard to absorb. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. My surgeon says no fiber. Recommended stool softener (colace) instead. I am taking 3 times per day. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. I say a Gordon Ramsey recipe for broccoli soup. Just cooked broccoli florets (no stems) on stovetop. Then put cooked broccoli florets in blender with some of water broccoli cooked in. Only other ingredient was salt for cooking. Was so smooth without any lumps. Was awesome. Have made several times since on regular food but just added a little low fat cheese in blender.
