Lifestyle issues: none. I went vegetarian back in 1989, and have been vegan for about 7 years now. Likewise my partner. I've always been a supplement taker, so I've never been anemic or had any issues (outside of eating too much junk food and carbs, of course, leading me here!). Post-op, my labs have been consistently good, so even with the malabsorbtion factor, I've been able to nourish myself well. The only thing any blood test has found was 8 weeks ago when I landed in hospital after a bike accident and the labs showed I was low in magnesium. So I've been taking a mag supplement since then which is fixing that.

Never a whisper of kidney stones.

It's tough recommending any Protein Drinks since I'm in Australia and we don't have access to the same brands as you guys over there. The best Protein Water I've found that's both tasty and not absolutely drowning in stevia is MyProtein's Clear Vegan Protein. I know you can get that one internationally. It's not as much protein per serve as a shake (it's 10g per serve), but since I have to drink a couple of litres of water a day anyway, getting 3 of those in means I've got over half my daily minimum protein intake plus water, so I love the double-up. Other vegan protein waters with higher protein counts that I've tried have either been too cloyingly sweet or just straight up revolting. The MyProtein one is like drinking cordial. Minus the sugar. The Apple & Elderflower flavour is the bomb.

Also: vegan protein will absorb as well as non-vegan. I promise it's a myth that you can't get enough protein from plants. Plenty of vegan athletes and body builders can attest! 💪

Thank you for your response! I really appreciate it. It seems like Australia has more access to plant-based Protein Drinks and shakes than we do here, based on what I've been researching. For instance, that water sounds amazing but I can't seem to find anything like that here. :(

Hi, certified vegan bypasser here! 🤓 It's totally doable, and I've had no issues at all hitting my Protein goals both with and without vegan Protein Water. The protein Water has been a big help, but honestly, even if I wasn't vegan I'd still be using the protein water as there are days when I just want to eat vegetables and don't want to deal with heavy seitans.

Speaking of, seitan (wheat meat/faux meats) are the best source of high protein I've found. The best ones can be sourced from good Chinese grocers in the freezer section. If you have a Trader Joes or Wholefoods near you, I expect they'd have a great vegan section. Some examples of the protein counts in the seitans I have access to:

Chinese supermarket Not Pork 100g serve = 165 cal, 21g protein

Chinese supermarket Not Duck 100g serve = 150 cal, 19g protein

    Princess G brand "Crispy G" 100g serve = 266 cal, 17g protein

Sayur Not Pork 100g serve = 155 cal, 21g protein

Lamyong is another great faux meat brand. But if you can't source good faux meats, good old tofu comes through:

    Firm Tofu (½ cup/126g) = 181 cal, 21.8g protein

Marinate that tofu in something delicious, and fry it up with some asian greens!

Some mung bean pastas are high in protein. Not the nicest wheat Pasta substitute, but with a nice tangy Tomato sauce and a little vegan Parmesan, it's acceptable. Also check the nutritional info on the back of Gardein products, I think they're pretty easy to find.

Soy milk has about 8g of protein per serve, so that's another way of slipping some extra protein in, especially if you can tolerate Protein Shakes. Protein fortified soy milk (10g per serve) in a plant based Protein Shake gives me a whopping 40g of protein in one go, so again, on days when I'm just craving vegetables, I can do a shake for Breakfast and a protein water or two throughout the day and easily hit my goals.

Some vegetables are also higher in protein, like edamame, but I honestly just stick with protein water and seitans, as that's what I enjoy.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you, this was very helpful! Have you noticed any issues with this lifestyle? Are your labs normal and you're able to keep on track? I think my biggest fear is protein not absorbing well enough. Have you ever had to worry about kidney stones? Do you have a recommended brand for the vegan protein water? Thank you immensely for all of your help!

  3. Hello everyone!

Its been quite a long time since I've utilized this site, but I'm itching to get people's opinions on something. Lately, I've been stewing on becoming plant-based, or at least, mostly plant-based. Can this be done as someone who's had WLS? Would it be difficult to meet Protein goals? Has anyone on here tried it, or does it?

There's a good possibility this question has already been asked on here before, and I just can't find it. But I am curious. Any thoughts on this are appreciated! Thank you.

Does anyone have Vitamin suggestions? I am 5 weeks out from surgery. I used Bariatric Fusion soft chews and the bar is so high now cause it is honestly like candy. I thought of subscribing to it and getting 4 packs at a time but it isn't the best pricing, although if needed I will do it for sure. I initially got them for the first month so I wasn't dealing with massive tablets right away. This week I implemented tablets again and OMG I regret it immediately. I had the WORST nausea since getting this procedure. I was so close to vomiting, my heart was accelerating, and I was shaking. I took it with yogurt in the morning. I haven't had anything happen to me when it comes to my stomach even the first few days after surgery. I am avoiding tablets and capsules for now. My doctor also told me to not use gummies due to the sugar. I am open to gummies if they are sugar free. I would like to eventually buy in bulk but wanted to explore my options before I commit to the soft chews.

Does anyone also have suggestions for calcium citrate? Those tablets are even worse! I used caltrate chewables but was reminded it was the wrong one! Let me know what you think folks!

I've used Citrical Petites and my levels always come back normal. It's a lot easier to get because you don't have to special order it from a website, plus, there's generic versions of it too. The only thing is you do have to take two tablets FOUR times a day, and you have to crush them and either dissolve them in a beverage or mix them in food.

If you want to avoid any possibility of sugar, Celebrate multivitamin capsules are excellent. You can buy them either on this site's store, or directly from their website https://celebratevitamins.com/products/multi-complete-45?variant=7642367197231. They are based out of a town only 30 minutes from me, so I tend to trust them a bit more than most brands since I know where they're coming from. ;) Good luck!

I am overwhelmed by all the information and would most definitely benefit from your sharing. I am scheduled for Feb. 24th and am worried I won’t have enough options to keep me from caving in.

I am Indian so I keep craving for something spicy and crunchy. Anything on that front?

I keep adding Indian taste to my food so I am sure down the road I'll have my share of recipes too.

I totally need a baked donut recipe please and thank you ❤️
    (Allergies: shellfish, food style: kosher/vegan)

That's easy! Even my non-bariatric friends love this recipe. Enjoy!

    2.25 cups of almond flour

.5 cups of sweetener of choice (I use Monk Fruit sweetener)

    1 tsp of baking soda

4 eggs (you're vegan, so I'd recommend Bob's Red Mill Egg Replacer...I've used it before and it's amazing)

1 tsp of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice

    .25 cups of milk substitute

Preheat the oven to 350. Grease a 12-count donut pan and set aside. Mix the ingredients together and pour into a plastic ziplock bag. Cut one corner of the bag and squeeze out batter into the donut pan. Bake for 12-15 minutes. Remove and let cool before transferring to cooling racks.

    Frosting:

There's actually a couple of things you can do here, depending on what kind of donuts you like. Are you a glazed donut person? Frosting? Jelly? Cinnamon sugar or powdered? I like using the standard recipe for Cool Whip frosting made with sugar free Cool Whip and sugar free pudding mix. But... I just realized that's neither Kosher or vegan. Let me know. :)

  13. Yes...but here's the catch: you have to eat "bariatric-friendly" versions of your favorite junk foods. ;) Think cauliflower Pizza Crust with low-sugar sauce and turkey pepperoni, donuts and Cookies made with almond flour and Monk Fruit sweetener, Mac and cheese made with macaroni from the Great Low Carb bread Co. and low-fat cheese sauce, sugar-free cool whip on a crustless sugar-free pumpkin pie slice, etc. The good news is there's a surprisingly large number of already-made foods available such as "Oreos" made by Catalina Crunch, "potato chips" made by Quest or Kay's, etc.

If you do your homework, you don't ever have to eat anything bad for you ever again. :)

Good luck! You'll do great. :)

  14. The first thing to do is ask yourself, what are my triggers? Then work to resolve them. What makes you get off of your plan? Find out what your triggers are, then resolve to get back to your plan.

If it's cravings that are driving you mad, try and find bariatric friendly versions of your favorite junk foods. Just make sure to measure out your portions. There's nearly a bariatric friendly version of just about any food these days, many of which taste just as good as "the real thing."

Good luck! You've got this! ❤️

  15. Hi everyone! I just wanted to say if anyone is need of recipes, I'm full of them. I know this time of year can be a nightmare for those of us who have had bariatric surgery, and I wanted to let you know if you need help, I'm here! I've got recipes for all sorts of bariatric-friendly holiday foods: pumpkin pie, cauliflower stuffing, Cookies, donuts, delicious drinks, etc. Yes, you CAN enjoy the tastes of the season if you've had bariatric surgery!

NOTE: Please let me know of food allergies.

Wow. Good riddance I say. My husband lost 70 lbs taking a weekly injectible for diabetes before I had my surgery. I know he wanted me to lose weight too. I had the sleeve in Dec 2019, and lost 104 lbs in 12 months and am maintaining that weight eating and drinking what I want but in tiny portions. I eat healthier than I used to, but I definitely still eat things on occasion that I did not eat in the first year at all, and I had no alcohol for the first 12 months. I am lucky like that, he was very supportive and even did the shake diet with me in the beginning. He's a great cook and it was my love of his good cooking and my liking to eat that got me to 304 lbs in the first place. I ate it all willingly, but he cooks healthier for me now. After 30 years I can't imagine my life with out him. That guy wasn't the right one for you, be glad he helped you see that before he broke your heart or it cost you money.

No, he definitely wasn't the right guy for me at all. I'm happy to hear you found a wonderful and supportive man. :) Stories like yours give me hope!
