    Any September Sleevers?

My pre-OP was on Friday August 30th and they said they had an opening on September 4th or the 17th. I took the 4th. I like the bandaid ripped off quickly. I didn't have words to describe what I was feeling until I read your post. Spot on. My surgeon was really cool because I asked to be an early surgery so she put me up first for the day. I can't stand waiting. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Menopause

Thank you for asking that question. I had a complete hysterectomy in 2010 at 38 years old. I am always hot. I keep my house at 65° all year round and also have a fan blowing directly on me at night. It seems by the responses that this has righted itself with some people who had the surgery. My family will be so happy to not live in an ice box. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Has this happened to anyone?

I haven't had my vgs surgery yet but I have had many other surgeries. I have tried to get back to normal to quick and have felt nauseous when I had over done it. We all heal differently and at different rates. Listen to your body ( which you did) and take it slowly. If it gets worse than call the practice you had your surgery and see if you need to be seen. Better to be safe then sorry. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. I have a BMI of 36. I have not had surgery yet but I am getting the sleeve done in September. I lost 48 pounds on my own. I had many doubts but I had to take in account want I wanted for my future. I have 3 kids that I want to be around for them and possible future grandchildren. The longer you are over weight the more stress your body is in. I don't want life long troubles with diabetes or heart disease. Someone told me to think of the surgery as one tool added to your other methods of lossing weight. Even if you have the surgery your still putting in all the work needed to loose the weight. You still choose what you eat and you still have to exercise. I have not had a life long struggle with weight. I had some health issues that brought on some weight. In 2016 I had a complete hysterectomy. I went to 135lbs. Then I went to 165lbs when my daughter was admitted to the hospital for 3 months. I got down to 150 lbs until April 2018 when I broke my ankle. I went up to 238 lbs. I am now down to 193 lbs. I have injures, I am not as young so my metabolism is not what it use to be. I need an assist. I choose surgery. My primary doctor did not know much about weight loss surgery when I asked for a referral. I saw him today for my 3 month A1C. He said he started looking into the surgeries and agreed with me that the sleeve was a good option due to my diabetes, sleep apnea, and high cholesterol. My bariatric doctor told me people with a BMI as low as 30, in other countries are getting weight loss surgery ( mostly gastric bypass) to treat diabetes. My bariatric doctor asked me if I had cancer would I get chemotherapy or radiation? I said yes. I have decided on getting the VGS. This surgery reduces the size of my stomach, removes the part of the stomach that controls hunger hormones and cravings among other things. On the emotional relationship for food, I believe we all have an emotional relationship with food on some degree. If you want to be well educated and get the best result out of surgery I would suggest seeing a therapist. Even if you don't have surgery see a therapist. You need to know what triggers you to eat and learn alternate and positive coping techniques. You can read any story anyone shares on this sight and the biggest reason they choose surgery is to be at a healthier weight regardless of what their BMI number started at. I hope this helps you. I find out my surgery date this Friday. So my date will be some time this September. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

To have surgery in September or wait

That was very brave of you. It's also a big step to ensuring you'll be in the right "frame of mind" starting on the the post surgery journey. I realized that's the first time I had shared that story with anyone since it occurred. I hope everything is going well for you. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    No Interest in Food?

I'm a new person on this app ... I'm not offended or scared to share ... I see it being said from a place of love and caring ... I believe it's called TOUGH LOVE ... I hope if I get to a low point and post something similar I would feel lucky that someone was not scared to say the thing that most people don't want to hear but need to hear. To have surgery in September or wait

My surgery was goi g to be the gastric bypass and I went to my psychiatric doctor and told them I couldn't take extended release. So she put in for my medication in the non extended release and I need to take the brand name of this medication or I get terribly ill. I got a call from the pharmacy telling me that they no longer make the brand name in the non extended release. Other doctors try to change my meds ... it has never gone well for me. I usually found a new doctor who was in the mind set of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mode. Now I am going in to get a reconsult for the Sleeve. Make sure everything is good with your meds that you need, that if you will need to be a different medication do to the surgery to make sure you react to that medication without any issues. The first time someone tried to switch my mental health medication I could not tell my dreams from reality. I went to a bank got a loan for a new car and traded in my old car and got a brand new vehicle. My husband came home and asked "honey why is there a new car in the driveway" and I responded with "what are you talking about". If the car wasn't in the driveway I would never have believed it. The dr said it was a drug induced psychosis and I was lucky that all I did was buy a car. Which I have to admit I got a really good deal on that car. I agree if your mind is out of sorts you won't be able to enjoy the benefit of the surgery. Think holistically body, mind, and soul! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. I haven't had surgery yet ... but I have been doing a lot of research with my own DNA and I found some interesting information ... I found out that weight training helps me loose weight more than cardio. Cardio is great and you need to get it in for a healthy heart but in some people it will not do much for weight loss. I agree with the many people here saying to stay away from the protein bars ... especially if your not doing weight training. Keep positive... Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. This thread has got me rethinking, in depth, about my goal weight. At my initial consult my nutritionist asked if would be happy at a 140lbs and I said no and I would be happy at 105 lbs. I've only been struggling with my weight for 8-9 years. It wasn't until I broke my ankle in 2018 that launched me into the abyss. I can live with a higher weight if I have swapped out fat for muscle. My ballpark date is the first week of September. Diabetes does suck. I'll never forget the ay my doctor looked when I went into his office for my follow up from getting my results from my blood work the first time. I really thought I was going to tell me I had cancer. I really never struggled too much with my weight. I weighed 94lbs until my mid 20's. Then I was 120 until I got pregnant with my son. After I had him I weighed 170lbs. I worked out and lost it. Only weighed a 130lbs when I gave birth and lost last as well, and my third one got huge and lost that. I was hanging around at 108 lbs for years. I walk in my doctor looks at me and then at the results rubs his hands over his face, shaking his head with the perplexed look on his face. He tells me my cholesterol was 398 and my fasting blood sugar was 400 something. I had a hysterectomy in 2010 gained some weight after that surgery. I had to move myself and my kids from on military base from the East coast to the midwest. My husband was deployed. Me, 3 kids (15yrs, 12yrs, and 8yrs old at the time) 3 cats, and a dog in a minivan. Needless to say, I was at the hotel bar drinking a few adult beverages after 10+ hours driving. Alcohol has way too many calories. I gained weight from that and then the big one was I broke my ankle in April of 2018. I could not walk and they could not find the break. I went all summer and a 10 day trip to Disney World on a broken ankle. When I go back my primary care Dr. told me to stay off it. I did. I had to go on extra meds to control my blood sugars. I was gaining weight rapidly. In September I told him that I could not walk from the front of a store to the back to get a gallon of milk without being in agony. So we got an MRI and bingo. They could not get me into surgery till Jan 30! Then I had reinjured my ankle in May this year, Hairline fracture in my tailia. So, I get to start physical therapy again next week. WOOT. I did lose 45lbs with just my diet but I have not lost anymore in months. I know I can not lose this weight by myself this time around. I am using this chance to take back control of my health. Bread, my own homemade chocolate chip cookies, and ice cream are my weaknesses. I have read that cravings and your taste buds change after surgery. I hope my brain will forget as well.

Hello Astrid, I did tell my son. He is a little frustrated by my decision but he said it was my body and life. I do believe once I get back to my normal size he won't be upset about anything. I brought my mom to my doctor's appointment and now she understands how this is my best option considering my diabetes. I was only 108 lbs when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I also recently sent out for genetic testing and found that my upper small intestine has a probably with incretins that regulate insulin so that was an affirmation for me. I am very nervous, actually scared out of my mind, but I am more scared about my diabetes. I am waiting for everything to clear with my insurance.

Hello Astrid, I'm new too and my surgery is in September also. My family is not all on board with my surgery. I did bringing my mother to my 2nd consult and had my husband on speaker phone. When they heard the doctor talk about how this operation would help some major health issues they see the logic. My mother gets scared when I measure my food and does not think it's enough. I am not even telling my son because he thinks I can lose weight with diet and exercise. It's not just about weight ... it's about being healthy. I would love to have RNY buddy.
