I have written about this problem many times but no one seemed to know or have an advise that I haven't tried. With the foul smelling stool I have been complaining of soft-runny stools that are also pale in color. Everytime I go to the doctor and mention this they just reassure me that it's one of the side effects of gastric bypass. However, 3 weeks ago I was given a course of antibiotics (I had bacterial sore throat) and to my surprise, my flatulence was noticeably reduced and was never smelly again, my stools were of a normal consistency and color, and I managed to gain 1 kg (which is a good thing since I lost more weight than required)... this lasted for almost 3 weeks then gradually things started to return back to pre-antibiotic status... honestly, the bariatric team of doctors I'm currently seeing never seem to be bothered and unfortunately they're the only ones available where I live. Does anyone seem to know what could be the case?? My life is ruined by this I try to avoid people all the time as I have no control over my flatulence and smelly stools...

I know this reply is over 5 yrs late but I thought if your having the same problem you it can help you and if not it can help others with a similar problem. It sounds like you have SIBO, small intestine bacteria over growth. They usually the treatment of choice here in the USA is Rifaximin antibiotic, but because gives a hard time covering it Metronidazole antibiotic is usually used to treat it. There are also alternatives to Metronidazole like Augmentin (Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid) and few more antibiotics can also be given to treat it. The fact that you were given a short course antibiotics and it made your symptoms go away for a while and that people who have had the gastric bypass are prone to getting SIBO all points to you possibly having SIBO. Your GI Dr. needs to order a hydrogen breath test to confirm this diagnosis.

  2. I had gastric bypass 12 years ago , lost 200. But I gain all back. I did the stomach swchering 2 years ago in UCLA and lost 60 lbs , and I am going to do the Distal gastric bypass now. I had the class before the surgery yesterday, and lost 27 lbs with diet. He wants me to lose 35-45 lbs before the surgery. The readjustment to pouch didn't last that long , and it opened up again.

Who was your surgeon at ucla?

  3. My revision surgery did take about an hour longer than usual due to the scar tissue left behind by the band. In general, the band to sleevers have a higher risk of having a leak -- my surgeon said our risk doubles from a 1% leak rate to a 2% leak rate. I'd ask your surgical practice if they have ever had any leaks -- mine (@ UCLA Bariatrics) had never had a leak. They were super cautious with me and kept me on liquids double the amount of time of their virgin sleevers.

I think it's smart to plan for the worst case scenario. I'd recommend asking your surgeon
    • Their leak rate
    • Are there any special post-op dietary considerations for a revision patient
    • How do they alter the surgery for revision patients -- for example, most band to sleevers end up having a slightly larger stomach due to the damage/scarring left by the band (this is also why we end up losing a little less weight than virgin sleevers)

Revising is scary, but it's also the best thing I've ever done. Life with a sleeve is so much better than with a band.

  4. I’ve read all through the ESG forum that there are doctors in Mexico who will perform on 25 BMI. Wondering who those doctors are if anyone would like to share

Ok, I just checked bmi of 25 is border line overweight or slightly overweight.
Bmi of 24.9 is normal weight or healthy weight. Most of us on this app would die to be a bmi of 25, i had the sleeve in 2019 and I am a bmi of 30.5. Most places in Mexico have a minimum bmi of 30 plus a comorbidity to do surgery. I did my sleeve in Mexico, my bmi was 35 at the time of surgery. 20220731_083623.jpg

  5. Hi Nina I had a revision or reconstruction for the same reason as dream believe. I went to Mexicali MX to a hospital. Mexicali Bariatrics did the reconstruction. It's been a slow process and I am 11 weeks. I feel very satisfied with limited food. I am exercising a lot more this time. I have more energy. I had to have a barium swallow and I had xray from the first sleeve. He told me it was not my fault for the weight regain. The did a barium swallow after revision checking for leaks and to show me the difference in the restriction. I lost 60lbs really fast the first time. I gained 25lbs over 6 years. I have lost 26lbs so far. The first time I lost a lb a day the first month. If your not happy get the second opinion.
Thank you so much for the reply. I got the sleeve back in june 2019, I never felt real restriction, for the past 3 yrs I have been thinking its all in my head. I got an endoscopy done last week to find out I have a small hiatal hernia and my sleeve is " the body of my stomach is markedly enlarged". After I got these results back, it all made sense, my sleeve was not tight enough from the get go. I have mild gerd. Will my mild gerd and small hiatal hernia disqualify me for a resleeve? I was never able to reach goal weight the first time around and I have gained 17 lbs since reaching my lowest weight after the sleeve. I am 3 yrs out now. How much did you resleeve cost and who was your surgeon at mexicali? When did you get the sleeve reconstruction?

  6. I am getting resleeve due to not loosing enough and gaining 30lb back. I lost 65lbs. My doctor would not do it he automatically said gastic without doing test ect. I had it in Mexico. I research it an found a hospital that does it only 3 hrs from my home. I live in AZ now. Going to Mexicali mx . I went there last week had a barium swallow before they would commit to a sleeve. I had my old xrays from right after surgery. Thank God I did. He said the technique they use left the top part really large from surgery. He told me it was not my fault. He said I needed a better tool to work with. So if your thinking re sleeve it depends on the issue. I go may 13 for surgery. Looking forward to the new me. I understand a lot more this time round.
How did your resleeve surgery go?

  7. Hi Nina,
Although I'm from a Turkish background, I didn't have the courage to go overseas to get this surgery done bc if any complication arises the doctors here in Australia are hesitant about treating somebody else's mistake. So I just bit the bullet and decided to have it here in Australia, I've heard a lot of success stories from people who have had it in Turkey. It's good to hear yours whent well too! Hope everything works out for you in the long run, [emoji120]My surgery is tomorrow I have butterflies in my stomach nerves are flying high lol I'm hoping it goes well as I'm having a hiatal hernia repair and a gastric bypass.
    All the best to everyone[emoji120][emoji120]
I did not have the resleeve or a revision yet, I am considering it. Did you have the resleeve?

  9. Hi, I’ve been resleeved!

I had my first sleeve in the UK in 2018. First couple of months I lost weight dramatically but I was always hungry (from the second day post op!!!) to the point I felt sick, no matter how often I drank. I could also eat a lot more/not feel my restriction as quick as others seemed to despite how slow I ate. Needless to say I stabilised after just 6 months and then Covid hit and I started regaining when I wasn’t able to be as active/go to the gym.

I went to Turkey last year and got a resleeve. The surgeon said that the top of my sleeve was much bigger than it should have been, part may possibly have been from me restretching it but he said the top part was large and looked like not all of my hunger hormone producing part of the stomach had been removed. He removed all the excess including my hunger hormone and made my stomach nice and small again. Results have been amazing, I’m 8 months post op, still losing although obviously slowing as I approach goal weight and I can still only eat a few mouthfuls!!

My experience with my resleeve is very different, I got horrific gas pain post op for a start which I didn’t get the first time (but normal and not uncommon, just walk walk walk). If I eat too quickly I will vomit/get pain, again another normal side effect they tell you about but I didn’t experience any of it first time round. I’m so pleased I went for my resleeve even though I was worried about going abroad, it’s been the best decision I ever made! :-)
Can you please share who you're dr in Turkey was that did the resleeve?
I am considering going to Turkey for a revision.

  10. Hi to everyone - never been part of a forum. American living in Brussels, and have found that much, good Medical Tourism, for my type of surgery, in Turkey. Surgery scheduled for Staurday, 11 January 2020. Seeking any last-minute advice, particularly best dietary advice that may have helped others, in the days before surgery. Doing mostly Atkins shakes, and Soups. FYI - total cost of surgery and seven days in Turkey (US$4,900). Surgeon has done over 700 gastric bypass surgeries.

How was your experience getting bariatric surgery in Turkey? Who was your Dr and what procedure did you have?

  12. Hi! I'm just about to book gastric surgery in Turkey and I'm based in the UK. I was just wondering if anyone else has done this? I've battled with my weight for my entire life and I've finally decided enough is enough. I have tried everything else and I'm completely trapped in a binge/restrict cycle, ready to break free.

Did you have your surgery in Turkey?

  14. I am a few months short of 2 years post-VSG and have lost 25% of my body weight. Have been steady at this weight for about 6 months now. This Michigan Bariatric Collaborative has an interesting outcome predictor calculator. https://www.michiganbsc.org/DecisionTools/

Wow, if that is the case than I am not too far off from the weight this calculator is saying i should be
