Hey everyone. I’m new to this and so excited about my surgery on 8/26/19. Any advice or suggestions I need to know about? You know like maybe somethings I need to be prepared for that doctors don’t tell you???

It will be a very hard road after the surgery but keep your eyes on the price. Most people gain there weight back 10 years from now and asked to get another surgery. Which they need to change the way they think about food and how they are eating.

Make sure you pack a long cord to charge your cell phone with a outlet wall charge plugger.

I would shoot for bypass since you have acid reflex like me. I have gastroparesis and GERD as well and went with bypass. However, my BMI is 36 and I weight only 156 so I only had one option is bypass.

Curious as to why surgery is an option at 156 lbs... Is it to resolve the gastroparesis? And is bypass the only option because of GERD?

Yes, it is to resolved the GERD, EOE, Gastroenteritis and Fatty Liver issues that I have. Yes, my GI doctor and Baratric Surgeon both agree that I can ONLY do Bypass. The other reason why is I am doing this is because I am going to be donating my kidney as well.

  3. Getting my surgery on August 2nd. Still unsure about getting a sleeve or a bypass. I’m 5’2’’ , 235 pounds (bmi of 43) with sleep apnea and acid reflux. My doctor said I could get either surgery, but the sleeve could increase the acid reflux. I’m worried about the dumping with the bypass. I’ve heard that with the sleeve, the surgeon removes the part of the stomach that sends the hungry signals. Whats your opinions?

My insurance company (Cigna) called me as well and said, "Congratulations, your weight loss surgery is approved!" I was like ... wait, what! I was not finish doing all my test before submit to y'all and they were like no problem! You are still approve. I was kind of surprise that my surgeon team submit it without telling me. Kind of took the fear out of me and the anxiety!

I like this topic. Surgery approaching June 12th. I know I am making the right decision but still having a lot of anxiety. As someone else said it would be irrational NOT to have anxiety before surgery.

DUDE< your surgeon is cute! (Sorry, I like google surgeon names) He is like a McDreamy!!!

    How was your surgery?

  6. I am very sorry that you are having this experience! I am also impatient but I had two surgeon going at the same time and see which one I got approve faster with. I had all my paperwork in when I first met them and just needed a couple more done. I was always calling them or e mailing them. Cigna was great to approve mine fast! I would bug the turkey out of the office or make a personal visit. This is your life they are playing with and you don't take a NO for an answer! If worst case comes, you have back up copy of your test and/or approval letters for surgery from other doctors and go with another weight loss surgeon. Keep us posted!

  7. Yes it should get better, remember when you get to solids-are you there yet? Take things slow and chew chew chew until you think you can't stand it anymore, count to 30 and give it 5 more chimps. And if That still doesn't work, check out whether you have a stricture, ulcerations or something else that might be causing it? Even intolerance to milk or soy Proteins could cause the errpie- durpies! [emoji307]And stay strong, darling, time cures many many things!
    Great advise... might do this

  8. I had a RNY because of a previous failed surgery (10 years ago) to correct my L shaped esophagus. 1/2 of my stomach was above my diaphragm. food was getting stuck just about every day. My BMI was about 34.
I didn't have to do any of the pre-op things that people with high BMI’s have to do. My doctor wasn’t a WLS surgeon. He was a thoracic surgeon & told me to find all of my info on the internet.
After I decided I wanted to do the surgery it was only 2 months til I had it.
I spoke with a nurse and a nutritionist through my insurance (Cigna) several times before & after my surgery.
I am 13 months out from my surgery. I have lost 65 lbs. I would like to loose 5 more to get me to the top end of a healthy BMI for my height.
The weight has dropped pretty easily & I know it’s gotta be exercise that takes off the last 5. I also know I would not have lost 65 lbs on my own. Now I just got to keep it off & that scares me
Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
I have Cigna 2 and not doing it for weight loss but for gastroparesis and GERD. I though I was the only one on here not doing it for weight loss. Gastro Family...

  9. Everybody has a difference requirement for there insurance company and/or surgeon team. Before I even meet my surgeon, I had a upper endoscopy, HIDA scan, gi nutrition e val, nut e valve, gi doc saying what I needed for surgery and his PA backing up his claim with a PLAN B, my pcp cleared me. The only things that I needed was a sleep study, 24 hr ph test, gastro empty stomach test, blood work, ultrasound, pulm doc clearence, ekg and physical with chest x ray. But, my surgeon team turn in all my paperwork before I had my 24 hr Ph test, ultrasound and sleep study and I was still approved by Cigna. Hope you get everything approve. I am not doing this for weight loss like everybody else on here... I am doing it to help my gastroparesis and GERD to go away.

  10. CONGRATS vovo2013!! That was QUICK approval. Out of curiosity, is surgery in August something you desired or is your dr that booked? Just wondering as I got my letter of approval from CIGNA 2 days ago!! HAH! Should have leaned harder on my dr's office to push stuff through instead of just telling me I didn't know what I was talking about and I shouldn't 'interfere' as it was delaying things. Hhhmm...I call Cigna for the THIRD time after you tell me once again that 'the process with take an ADDITIONAL six months'..and they are so frustrated with YOU that they call your office personally and explain to the office manager that they agree with me that I've met all the requirements so send the paperwork already!? And guess what, yep, they approved me.
I love the dr i'm working with so am torn about mentioning how 'unpleasant' it has been to feel like I have to fight some of his staff. I'm just relieved to be approved. Spouse just seems freaked out and concerned that I should not be doing this. His opinion will never change on this. I've been considering this for many years now and feel I have made a well though out decision that is the best for where I am at and where I need to be.
I personally pick August 2019 because I will be out of the country all of July 2019. During my surgeon hunt, I had Mcdreamy office staff treat me like that but the surgeon was amazing. I was like hell no, I will not be treated like this and look for somebody else. Plus, I found out were Mcdreamy was going to preform the surgery at a hospital that was out of network with my insurance. So, that was another reason why I did not go with Mcdreamy office. Yes, he was super cute and oh man... so good looking! I memorized the who baratric guidelines for Cigna and got most of my appointment done before I even met my surgeon. So, I had a quick approval from Cigna.

    Hi Laura.

Since you are young I would definitely do the sleeve. You may want another child, and nutrition will be easier with the sleeve. The weight comes off just slightly slower with the sleeve, but over all results are very similar with either surgery as far as weight loss. I have heard at my wl group 3 bypass patients have Iron deficiency and 1 got ulcers in the stomach portion that is bypassed as it still makes acid even though it isn't getting food.

Any surgery is just a form of restriction which makes it easier to not over consume - as long as your head is in the game. Unless you examine your relationship with food, you will be less successful, the motivation and enthusiasm is high in the first year to 18 months and that will get you far into the journey. Every person has to find their own way and it can be tough at times.

Do some reading on this forum - use the search function to find topics and view some youtube videos by Dr. Weiner, Dr. Duc Vuong, etc. books by Geneen Roth and Jan Chosen Bays address food issues. Research and read as much as you can before surgery. Good luck.

This is true but I am already anemic with Iron. This is a huge factor I have to weigh by going into surgery and afterwards next year... donating my kidney! So, pick wisely...

  12. I would take a LONG charging cord for your cell phone. Change of clothing, toothbrush, lotion, tooth paste, brush for your hair and slippers to walk around the hospital and may be a book to read if bored. Hospitals are filty dirty and just letting you know to always wear something on your feet! Have a pillow for the ride home!

Take a SHOWER before or the day of your surgery!

NEVER walk barefoot at the hospital.
