Well, tomorrow at 7 am is the "big day". I'm a bit disappointed that none of my family has come home before now (it's 9:33 PM) as I have to be at the hospital by 5 AM. :( :(

My eldest daughter flies back to PA tomorrow (mid-day) and originally she was coming with my husband & I to the hospital and then hopefully I would get to recovery before he had to drive her to the airport.

Youngest daughter was going to join us @ the hospital closer to my surgery time.

My husband called and announced that they have made things "much easier" (not his specific wording but the gist)..and that youngest daughter is going to pick up eldest and drive her to the airport so "they don't have to get up so early" and then..after youngest has dropped her off..she will stop by on her way to work.

I am realizing now I'm actually VERY hurt by this. When my parents were alive, we made sure for any major surgery to be there with them no matter WHAT time the surgery was. To make sure we could see them before they went back.

I am...stunningly hurt by this and I'm just now realizing it. My husband and eldest are out drinking beer..they said they'd be home early..but it's almost 10 PM and I need to be up by at least 4:15 AM.

I have been patient and understanding and ALONE most nights as everyone goes and does the usual 'food socialization'. My eldest doesn't get good Tex-Mex where she lives so this was a long standing tradition. I HONESTLY don't begrudge them that..but what is a SCARY and very important day for me...it's like my husband is only showing up as he HAS to be there.

I don't understand my kids..I really don't. You could not have paid me any amount of money to not be by my parent's side...both of them. And I always was.

I don't even have my parents left to be there with me..I know many do not. But I am very disappointed and I feel very very alone.

Sorry, am not handling this well. To everyone else still upcoming in Week 4, I wish all of you the very best!

Karen, ((((HUGS)))) to you!! You are a fantastic mom, wife and daughter to your parents and I totally understand your being hurt. But I honestly think they do not understand the full import of your surgery tomorrow as they think it is "elective bariatic" surgery and not due to what they consider life threatening otherwise, I bet they would move heaven and earth to be with you (for instance if it was heart or kidney surgery). Except one is going through it, I don't think they get it. And because you seem like a mom that makes everyone's life easy, I bet you have not been dramatic about the surgery and so they just assumed you are "cool" with it.

You are hurt, but your hubs and children love you enormously, they just are not in your mind set. It could be worse, imagine if they were the the opposite i.e, all up in your pre-op diet, telling you what to eat or drink, being extremely scared for your and the impending surgery and trying to dissuade you from going through with it and turning tonight into a vigil of fear😨

Not to say there's no happy medium of support, but that human response and behavior can be so varied!

Good luck and Godspeed tomorrow. Just imagine by this time tomorrow, you are on the other side. Praying for speedy recovery for you!!! :1007_hearts:

  2. First follow up with Surgeon:
Doing well so we advanced my diet to soft phase (eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, ricotta, etc)
Port sites healing well, walking enough, drinking fine etc. Told no smoking drinking alcohol, lifting things over 15 lbs. (Don't do any of this anyway )
Side note: Asked the question about prevalence of GERD in VSG patients and was provided with the info that he counsels patients who are considering the sleeve that there is a ~30% chance of GERD developing (~30% chance of no development, ~30% chance of it being reversed through VSG) if there was amy history of reflux. I didn't have Reflux regularly prior to surgery only during my first pregnancy
He about 1/3 of people *may* develop it after VSG. I found that really interesting... Has anyone else been provided this type information?

Anyways here's the food ive made/tried so far: yogurt, cottage cheese and ricotta bake (everyone else's version featured)

Congratulations on the advancement!! May your recovery continue to remain seamless!!!

  4. Folks, don’t worry. I know you want it all gone now...I did , too...but it will happen!
I am 5”6”. I was 209 at my consult. I was approved by my insurance companies and given my checklists (all the boring poke/prod stuff). They scheduled me for 3 months later and I set about doing all the stuff they’d scheduled. All they told me was DON’T GAIN ANY WEIGHT OR YOUR INSURANCE COMPANIES WILL DECLINE SURGERY! Okay. Got it.
So, I got super vigilant and began LOSING weight. I showed up for surgery weighing 180 lbs with a BMI of exactly 30... apparently, the OTHER number where MY INSURANCE COMPANIES WILL DECLINE! Uh, wait...you’ve got to explain this stuff upfront! (However, since I had a complication, my Doctor got it approved on that day and off we went.)
Anyway, this is the long way of saying, I had my surgery at 30 BMI! I kept and continue to keep copious notes on my weight loss. Initially I lost 8-10 pounds per month. Then it slowed to 5-6 pounds. I hit my goal very quickly but then I decided that was my Doctor’s goal. MY goal was 35 pounds lighter. So I kept going.
Now I look back and think how the time flew and what I’ve accomplished. But, in the moment, I thought it was taking forever!
Don’t spend time worrying about how quickly it will happen. It’s different for everyone. Comparison is fruitless. It gets you nowhere and it robs energy you could be using to make sure you get where you want to be!
i wish all of you the very best.
Thank you so much for this!! Very encouraging and helpful![emoji7]

  5. I'm looking forward to what I would evolve into!! I'm very aware that this site won't consume me as much as it does now but I certainly hope I don't lose the thrill of coming on here!!

The thrill I hope to lose is my ridiculous ability to veg out on my couch after work!!! Especially after I feel I've gone to my cycle class in the morning

  6. I’m scheduled for surgery on August 15th. I had a bad experience the last surgery I had. Not with anesthesia, but had a bad infection after. Lately I have been having dreams about going under. A few days ago I woke up yelling no and felt like I couldn’t breathe. Last night I had another dream I kept trying to take the mask off. Is this normal? Should I reschedule until this subsides.
Hello Deegirl31 Yes it's absolutely normal!!! Especially after a previous bad experience with infection!
Just keep reminding yourself how safe this surgery is and due to previous complications, extra precautions should be taken by both you and your surgical team.

If I were you, I won't cancel or reschedule as your anxiety is normal and protective.
Keep watching/reading successful surgeries and recoveries should help ease your mind.

    PS:
Our names are very similar and your surgery date is a day before mine! I'll be watching, praying and cheering you on as you go before me.
Cheers to seeing you on the other side soon

  7. I consider this my biggest success. Not the weight loss. But the fact that I am now pursuing my personal trainer certifications with a specialty in obesity. I want to specifically work with bariatric patients who may struggle to exercise, and may rely on the surgery to just help with diet when it should be a comprehensive lifestyle change. I am so excited that I may someday make a difference to even just one person. One person that I was just not even a year ago. This surgery has changed not only my weight, but my mentality and my life. I want to pay it forward. Screenshot_20190723-193320_Outlook.thumb.jpeg.68dbba21ed9d7729ec9632973a68951b.jpeg

  8. Yes... Too normal
I even stopped tylenol days ago and i dont play when it comes to pain management...
Truly happy for you and the speedy recovery!! I felt your denial and pain of going through a second surgery in your posts and I'm glad you were awesomely rewarded by a quick recovery.

    Full disclosure:
TBH, I keep going back and forth between the sleeve and the bypass as it's a very difficult decision to make. I'm deathly afraid of GERD and sincerely your need to revise got me hopping to my surgeon's office. She continues to insist that the sleeve is still a great fit for me so I'll trust her judgement.

I'll say that how you handled everything has been a class act[emoji122][emoji122][emoji122][emoji122] and dare I say, if the worst happens with my journey, I hope I handle it like you[emoji169][emoji169][emoji169][emoji169][emoji108][emoji108]

But let this thread continue, it's a joyous thread that I look forward to daily......okay, hourly[emoji1][emoji1][emoji1]

  11. Yay!!! Congratulations!! Yes, I was interested as well, since I had heard that I'd probably lose at a slower rate because I my BMI was less. I do think though that cutting out processed food, sugar, white breads and pastas (actually bread in general), soda and caffeine has helped a lot too. I'm not cleared for exercise until the 25th but I walk, and have done some hiking. I'm so excited for you!! This surgery has been the best thing I've ever done for myself, by far!!! I already feel amazing!! Please keep in touch and I'd be happy to answer any questions you have!!!
Thanks for the encouraging comments and feedback of what worked for you. So appreciated!! I plan to cut out exactly those items!!!!

  13. I just got my RNY surgery date for August 19th and my insurance approved me early. I’m in TOTAL SHOCK and almost in tears. I’m in month 4 of 6. And now it finally feels real. Finished up with pre-surgery registration today. I see my surgeon for pre-op appointment 8/1 and then next is 8/19 SURGERY DAY.... I feel like shouting from a roof because I’m just that darn happy (but I’m not). Only 2 people know about it. [emoji5][emoji5][emoji5] I was so anxious I blew through all of my clearance visits in 3 months.... my doctor said “YOU ARE MY ROCKSTAR PATIENT” [emoji2][emoji16]
    Congratulations and welcome!!!!!!!![emoji169][emoji169][emoji169]

  15. You needed to vent, come here any time and do that - it's important for your mental health and your journey.
Some men are insecure when the wife makes drastic physical changes and changes the roles that were in place before. He may not know how to handle that. Your description sounds like he is needy and depressed, if his depression meds mess with libido that could bother him. (Wellbutrin does not do that BTW. It takes 3 weeks to take effect, and in some it can have a slight appetite depressant as well.) Depression is joyless and makes a person feel stuck. Men seldom go to counseling, but suggest it anyway.
Try to think back to when you dated and did things together - maybe suggest a date night once a week based on those common interests. Tell him he has to get dressed up, go to a bar with music and dance and talk - you can just get Water with lemon so it looks like a drink. Getting out of the house is good for depression. Or invite another couple over to do something - even just playing cards. Did he ever have hobbies? Motorcycles or bowling, fishing, trains, etc. Arrange a picnic to a forest preserve for the family and lock the phones in the car, bring a frisbee.
    Good luck.
Well said!!! There's a lot of research that has been done about how the marital dynamics changes quite dramatically after WLS! Even the most securely attached couples have adjustment problems talk more of couples that already dealing with active/acute psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. It is EXTREMELY difficult!!

I can so understand your frustration and angst but if you can view him differently (not easy to do) as in from empathy and compassion because believe it or not, those characteristics he's exhibiting now have ALWAYS been there, you just chose to make a change and he has not yet.

I will STRONGLY recommend couples counseling as a way to eventually push him to his own individual therapy. My fear is that if he does not grow and catch up to you, it may cause irreparable damage to your relationship.

Well done!!! You are inspiring and amazing for choosing to make very difficult changes for a better life especially with little marital support/solidarity.

Continue to vent and we'll continue to support and cheer you on because we understand and know IT IS NOT EASY!!
