I remember this phase so well. I couldn’t stomach most Protein Drinks after surgery and still can’t drink Premier Protein without having instant bloating and cramps. I use a scoop of GENEPRO unflavored powder in my crystal light/ diet tea/ coffee.

Hang in there! I promise it gets better. It took me at least a month to start getting anywhere near my Fluid and Protein goals. Your body needs time to heal.

Thanks I'll check out genepro! I actually tried premier for the first time last week so it's okay for me now but now that you mention bloating. That could be the cause. I had one yesterday and was bloated and gassy all day and I think it's because of premier!

I think I'm getting enough Protein in now or close enough. I'm on pureed now and move up to soft solids in 4 days and I can't wait! These phases are a true test in patience and not trying to lose your mind with overthinking and anxiety. I keep trying to remind myself how far I've come. 3 weeks out from surgery and I lost 22lbs so I think I'm doing well now :)

Premier Protein shake flavor banana and cream is very good. I was hesitant about the flavor but it puts a spin n weightloss shake. Try it. I also open it, sip it a bit then freeze it an eat as freeze.

I just got the caramel flavor Premier Protein and i love it. I'll check out the banana. I was hesitant to buy it but I'll take your recommendation. Thanks!

I'm in puree phase now and about to go to soft solids but still need to get that Protein in. I've been relying on greek yogurt as well so that's been a big help.

  3. Thank you for this post! I really needed this today. I was having a hard time the past few days thinking I shouldn't have done this but I have to shut that **** down and push out those negative thoughts. I need to give myself so much more credit.

I did surgery 23 days ago and lost 22 lbs! That's such an achievement and I should be so proud of myself. I had no pain ( just a little after surgery which is normal), no vomiting, no dumping. I haven't cheated on my diet and stuck to my plan as hard as it was. I probably could be better at getting in my Water but that's something I'm working on. I'm exercising 3 times a week and working up to 5. This could have been so much worse and I sometimes tell myself I'm not doing a good job but this is a life changing surgery and every day won't be rainbows and unicorns for me. The payoff at the end is totally worth it and I hope we can all stay strong through this journey and when we see the results at the end, we'll know we did the right thing!

  4. hello! Anyone out there like me with Hypothyroidism? How has the surgery affected weight loss? Is it normal? Energy levels?

I'm still taking Synthroid 75mcg for my symptoms but I want to know if it gets easier and if the hormones get under control. I'm only 12 days out from bypass but I wanted to see if anyone out here was further along and how their body is adjusting.

I appreciate good service. I’ve been treated rudely in some restaurants. Guess the wait staff didn’t want a decent tip. *snicker*

Did you get a bariatric Restaurant Card from your surgeon? Some restaurants will honor smaller portions if you use the card. I never used mine

Red Robin - I order a turkey burger, no bun, steamed veggies instead of fries. To go boxes for left overs are great. I can make one restaurant portion into several meals.

Wait what?! A bariatric restaurant card is a thing? I need that!

End of week one. First few days behind on fluids and Protein but have hit goal last 3 days. Jumped on scale this morning and down 12lbs. SW was 261. So far so good. Only downside is another week of liquids to go.

Great job! Week one is TOUGH! I have one more day of liquids and I can finally get some soft foods. You'll get through the second week. I thought I couldn't and then I was like why did I do this?! It's still hard but it gets a little easier so you got this!

If you get tired of Protein Shakes, switch to another brand because their flavor would be a little different. I had Unjury and I was losing my mind. I was so done with the taste so I got Isopure which has 40g Protein in one bottle and so many flavors! Also, GNC lean 25 is great too.

I also can't have whey Protein - not because I think it's gross, but because it makes me vomit. NowSports chocolate Soy Isolate is good! But really, I totally eff'd up on Protein until like the 3 month mark. I got like 10g a day. Since whey made me vomit and I hadn't really found another kind that tasted okay, I just didn't drink any shakes at all. I lived. Try other Proteins like pea, rice, egg, animal, or soy. And if you don't hit your goal right off the bat, don't sweat it.

My dietician recommended Isopure Protein Drink. It has been a lifesaver! I mean it has 40g of protein in one bottle and it's not creamy. I started getting nauseous while drinking the whey protein. I've been using Unjury. Their chicken broth tastes great but then it has that whey protein smell and it made me nauseous while I was drinking it. So I stopped with the Unjury and switched to Isopure and GNC Lean 25 shakes. I think I'm so tired with the creamy shakes. I think what works best is using 2-3 different brands because everyone has their own different flavor.

I just have one day left on full liquids and I couldn't be happier! :696_tada:

It is so normal to feel the way you're feeling right now. The light at the end of the tunnel is so so close for you, You're almost there!!! YOu got this. I remembered, I was putting Cereal, chicken, steak in my mouth on my second week just to chew and taste it, then I'd spit it out.

I also HATED the Protein Shakes.

Good Luck. Hope to hear your progress here soon. I'm sure it will be a happier version of you soon enough 🙂

Thank you! I have having such a meltdown wondering if I could do this but everyone on this forum has been so kind and helpful! Haha I wanted to do that with some potato wedges this week. They smelled so good but I resisted and had my sad Protein Shake. I have a day and a half left on these Protein Shakes so I cannot wait for my next phase! So at least I can be happy for myself for making it through the most tough part!

I’ve been using the premier and they just feel so heavy for me! Obviously everyone is different so you might have great luck with it! You can buy 18 packs at costco but I would definitely recommend like a 4 pack to start just in case you hate them lol

Thanks! I’ll take your advice and do the 4 pack first haha. They have a wide range of flavors so that’s what kind of got me excited because I’m so done with the vanilla and chocolate and strawberry life lol. I’ll let you know what I think when I try it!

Past two days I've hit 62 grams of Protein myself. Two shakes made with a local store's Protein Powder (half scoop in each with a half cup of milk), half a Greek Yogurt, and one of the BariatricPal Soup mixes. I can't wait till Thursday because I move on to purees and can add a bit more variety.

I'm very much looking forward to hummus, and this buffalo chicken puree thing that I'm eyeing.

Omg literally the 2 exact things I’ve been dying to try! Especially the buffalo chicken purée! I already decided that will be one of my first puree meals haha

I had huge issues with my shakes making me feel awful too but I was choking them down because I wanted to get all my Protein in. I started diluting them with Water which helped but didn’t fix it! Finally I couldn’t do it anymore and I called my surgeon and he said that this early on in the process, it’s more important to get your fluids in than it is Protein. And if the protein is making me sick, it’ll make drinking Water so much harder since I’m not feeling well. So he slowed me to stop the shakes and told me to focus on my fluids instead. Obviously every surgeon is different but I hope that helps!

This is super helpful! Thank you so much! I think I’ll try your suggestion of diluting the shakes more. My doctor is out of the country this week so I don’t even know if he’ll get back to me soon if I ask.

I was trying soooo many different flavors to keep it interesting but they all taste the same and have that weird whey taste. I’ve been using Unjury. I was told Premier Protein is way better so I might try that out and see if it helps and may check out Isopure also. Anything else will be better that this point lol

What protein have you been using?

I’m having issues with all my shakes. I can’t deal with the sweet flavors anymore. The only thing I’m enjoying right now is broth or Water. The shakes and even the crystal light make me so nauseous now ughhh! Didn’t think trying to get liquids in would be so hard even though I know this diet would be difficult haha

I haven’t had a hard time getting my shakes in but I feel like I’m so hungry. And I’m already dealing with temptations. My coworker had a birthday so of course cupcakes were brought in. And of course they were placed where the whole office could have easy access to them, right by my desk. So I got to stare at them for a few hours before I couldn’t take it anymore and I moved them. I could just imagine myself licking the icing off. What’s interesting is that I wasn’t afraid it would make me sick. I was afraid that it wouldn’t make me sick and that I would realize what I can get away with eating still...does that make sense?

Yeah that totally makes sense and absolutely justified why you’d be afraid! I feel like through this time we’ll experience all these tests to see how far we can be pushed to our limit. My niece wanted fries the other day and my fam and I went to get and then they all got food and the entire car smelled of fried chicken and I was thinking well if I chew a piece of chicken and spit it out then that won’t hurt right? I didn’t do it but I was close to. Like you said, there’s a fear you can get away with it then if you do then it can become a habit. We gotta be strong but my doctor reminded me 2 days ago that the first 6 weeks are the toughest. We just have to remember the payoff at the end!

Also cupcakes and cakes were my biggest weakness! I think cupcakes became my comfort food and I used it as my unwinding from a hard week at work treat which clearly wasn’t helping me at all. So great job resisting and getting the cupcakes out of your sight. Must have been terrrrrrible seeing that in your face all day!

I took a lot of anti nausea & gasX the 1st 2 months post op. My daughter didn’t start feeling well until she could add eggs & soft foods after her surgery.

Does your insurance have a nutritious you can speak with? We have Cigna & they called me every week for the 1st 2 months.

I’m thinking that I need to get anti nausea meds because it’s too much now. I just cried over my Soup broth haha! My doctor prescribed Metoclopramide for the nausea but it doesn’t seem to be helping :(

im looking forward to soft foods so I can have eggs and feel like I’m feeding my body.

I actually have a follow up visit with my nutritionist this Friday so hopefully we can figure out ways to help me but by then the liquids will be done hopefully! I know I just have 4 more days on it but it is tough. I just hope the days fly by.

I had surgery on Wednesday and I’m home recovering. Parts of this have been much easier than expected and parts are super dang hard. For example, sleeping lol. I am getting plenty of fluids down and able to get my meds down. I even got one Protein Shake down today. I recommend not getting the vanilla shakes. They’re so darn sweet.

  15. Never realized how many food commercials there were until after surgery. It’s torture! I’m not even thinking that I want to eat those foods; I’m just jealous that people get to eat as normal while I sip Protein Shakes all day haha. It’s terrible!

i unfollowed all my fave restaurants and foodie pages as well and told my friends not to send me any foods on Instagram so I should be safe for now. I followed healthy food pages so I can get some good recipes when I get onto soft foods.

My nutritionist told me the chocolate fairlife is a good Protein source. 12 oz is 19g and qualifies for my program. It has to have 20g and under 200 calories, which it is 190. However, I prefer to drink it plain. I have never liked sweet beverages, weird I know. I prefer to eat my calories lol

Oh good to know! I loved it before surgery so at least I can keep having it haha. I was a big sweets and Desserts person and now the thought of sugar is making me sick so who knows? Maybe I’ll end up no longer liking it haha. I’m so much happier when I’m having broth lol

  17. Yeah why is whey so gross?! I know we all made this decision to better our lives but they need to figure out how to make Protein taste better haha. I have protein breath and burps as well so it’s just constantly on me and I can’t get rid of it. I start the purée diet on Friday and it’s taking everything in me not to start it early. I’ve had the fairlife chocolate before. I love it! I love fairlife milk in general. It tastes so much better than other mills. l’ll ask my doctor and dietician if the chocolate is allowed yet or at all for my plan.

Also Mrsgamgee, I love that mantra and I’ll keep repeating it in my head until this liquid phase is done.

The one thing frustrating me is knowing that this would be difficult but now that I’m in it, I had no idea just trying to keep liquids down would be so hard. I’m glad that I’m not the only one. Hopefully I can stop feeling crazy soon!

  18. Hi everyone! I'm new to these forums and I'm so happy to find them. This might be a bit of a venting sesh/rant. I don't know anyone who had gastric bypass and I don't want to bother my doctor or dietician every 2.2 seconds with questions. I just need to feel like I'm not alone in this. I felt like I was doing okay for a bit. I'm having issues with the Protein intake. I'm sick of the taste and the smell of it makes me nauseous. I'm sure many of you experienced this. How did you get past this? Today I felt weak. I'm getting in my liquids but I just feel sort of hopeless and tired. I don't know what mood I'm going to get each day and I feel frustrated. I already suffer with anxiety and it's heightened now. I don't even want to check my weight on the scale because I'm scared I didn't lose enough because I'm super impatient and expect instant results which isn't realistic of course.

I'm so happy and grateful that I did this surgery. It's something I've been wanting for a long time but I'm just about ready to give up and it's only been 9 days since my surgery on March 23rd. I'm sitting with a Protein Shake right now typing this and it just makes me feel sick. I literally never want to have a protein shake for the rest of my life. I'm not really craving fatty foods. I was craving some on my first 2 days post op but now i just want to get to the soft foods phase so I can at least feel like I'm nourishing my body. I'm terrified of the unknown and I'm afraid of failing. It's tough trying to figure out what my body is telling me. I still don't understand if I'm feeling hunger pangs or if it's just a stomach ache.

I have my 2 week follow up with my doctor in a few days but I'm just looking to talk to people who've been through this and maybe help ease some of my anxiety about the unknown. I'm just scared and feel alone. Sorry for the Debbie Downer rant.
