It would have taken me 6 months but instead it was a 10 month process for me because I didn’t pass my psychological evaluation. I had to to go added therapy. Truth be told I was not ready and they definitely picked up on that. At the time I was MAJORLY disappointed but now I’m very great full for that extra time it took for me to get to know myself and why I overeat. For anyone else out there struggling with depression or understanding their unhealthy eating habits please try to listen to The Weight Lose Surgery Podcast by Reager Cortelle It helped me immensely. It helped me much more then therapy ever did.

I will definitely give it a listen!

First comment ever!! I met my surgeon on Jan 18th and did my Dietician appt and Psych Evaluation this week. They will submit for insurance approval either tomorrow or Monday. I was told surgery would happen no later than the end of March. I already have my endoscopy and stress test scheduled.
I have BCBSTX and my insurance only requires one appt with the Dietician and a Psych Evaluation.

Good luck to you! Another fast track to success.

My first consult was in August 2018 and I had gastric bypass surgery in December 2018, but… I had started the process 2 years prior but dropped out of the program due to family medical issues. I came prepared for my second round and had letters regarding my weight and BMI from my PCP for each of the last five years along with a letter recommending the surgery. Also had a year's worth of WW payments printed out. My program admin was amazing and gave me all the possible things I would need to get approved before I even had an EKG. She was amazing.

I had insurance through BCBS at the time and pushed to get my surgery before the end of 2018 as my insurance changed to United and wls would no longer be covered. Seriously I can't figure it out… why wouldn't an insurance company just pay for the surgery rather than paying for all the prescriptions and medical conditions needing treatment because of obesity? Surely it's cheaper for them in the long run to just pay for wls, right?

That is odd! Insurance companies are so full of it.

Damn 6-9 weeks for appointments? That's alot.

So the 6-8 weeks included meeting with initial surgeon, then a nutritionist, a psychologist and a physiologist. I also had to do bloodwork. This was all over the time between thanksgiving and New Years so part of the delay was just the normal trying to schedule things year end rush.

Ohhhh. I get it now. The holidays are the worse time to expect people to do their jobs.

But why? Why did this need to be cross-posted in multiple forums? *scratches head*

Because after I posted it in the VSG forum, I thought that maybe rants and raves would be a more appropriate home for it. Does the post being in two places make sense now?

First appt was right after thanksgiving with about 6-8 weeks of approval appts. Then I could have scheduled it within a month after that but choose 2 because of some stuff going on I wanted to wait after. Then the Mr broke his ankle and couldn’t drive so I choose to push it back another month until he was functional. All told just about 5 months

Damn 6-9 weeks for appointments? That's alot.

    Good morning everyone!

I had a super weird dream last night and I couldn't wait to get to work so I can tell you all about it. It's a long one.

I hope to get VSG during spring break. I am freaking out about every detail because I've never had to stay in a hospital before.

    So here goes...

The dream started out with a call from the hospital. They called me and told me to come in immediately for my surgery. I was confused because I thought my surgery would be happening at a later date. I told the woman on the phone that and she hit me with "Do you want the surgery or not?" So I'm like, "Yeah. I'm on my way." So my boyfriend and I get to the hospital and I'm so freaked out. I noticed that we did not pack a hospital bag and I was upset because I didn't have lip balm. (A lot of you guys say lip balm is a life saver after surgery.) So I was upset. My boyfriend offers me his lip balm but I'm still upset. So then, a doctor comes and separates us. The hospital staff puts me on a table and numbs an area on my stomach. In my mind I'm like, "So this is it. Here I go." So only a small part of my stomach is numb and the surgeon is like "Okay WeGettingThere, I'm gonna do an incision." He cuts a little and he leaves me like that. I'm not bleeding or anything. There's just this small gash in my belly. The surgeon is like "My assistant will finish this." HE LEAVES ME. The assistant doesn't do anything! She shows me to my recovery room and my boyfriend is there waiting for me. I'm like "Excuse me. I don't think I'm supposed to be left like this." AGAIN, I'M NOT BLEEDING. The assistant says I'm fine and to relax while she sits at the foot of my recovery bed and watches Maury or Jerry Springer. I forget. END OF DREAM.

So that was my dream. What do you all think? Did you guys have dreams about your procedures? Share them!

Looks like my surgery is going to be late March. I submitted an application to the clinic on Dec 18th just to see if they'd accept me into the bariatric program. 4 weeks they did. The next day I saw the surgeon for my first visit. The very next day I had my psych eval. Today (a week after the psych eval) I go to review the psych eval results. Next I have a dietary visit and an exercise therapist visit. Then 2 weeks later I follow up with them then they submit to ins. Voila!

Wanna hear from oposite extreme? 3 years and a month nearly.
1st attempt: August 2015-January 2016- Job terminated, no one made me aware my secondary was less stringent and would have covered.
2nd attempt November 2017- February 2018- after every requirement fulfilled Surgeon kicked me to the curb, refusing to do my surgery.
3rd attempt: March 2018- spent 4 months doing further requirements this program required, meeting every month also with Nurse-Practioner. Surgeons pre-exam July 17th 2018, surgery preformed September 5th 2018 at 7AM at OSU- Wexner Medical Center by Bradley J Needleman MD, who I can never stop being grateful to, he took a 72 year old sad dejected and rejected person and helped her into a future of health. And now I work to finish the miracle he started for me, not easy, had some set-backs but I Shall power through to victory, just wait AND see-----
AND THE REST OF MY LIFE SHALL BE THE BEST OF MY LIFE, THIS I VOW! 😛👍😛

I'm sorry you had so many roadblocks! You are so strong.

I was self-pay, so three weeks. I have insurance, but it was going to be a minimum of six months and I knew in advance that I’d probably fail on the weight loss requirements for each month. So I sacrificed and dug deep for $17000. I’d do it all over again. I’ve lost over 120lbs since having surgery on 02/14/2018.

    DAAAAANNNNNG! Money Honey!

I have Cigna, and it took me from November 21 (my 1st appointment) to this Wednesday (January 16) to get my surgery scheduled. The earliest date I could have done surgery was February 18, so that would have been just under 3 months. I scheduled for March 5th though because it’ll allow me to use my spring break for recovery (I teach).

Now, as a caveat, I’d had a physical and blood work a week before my first appointment so I didn’t have to re-do that, I managed to attend a support group meeting the day of my first appointment, and I had literally 0 medical clearance requirements (EGD, sleep study, etc) because all of my blood work, blood pressure, etc. were good and I’ve had a million EKG’s because my sister has a heart condition that can be hereditary. My surgeon said I was the first patient in months who he hadn’t required any additional testing for. If I’d had to do that, it might have extended things a bit.

Woah, that's super quick. I hope I can schedule my surgery for April so that I can recover during spring break too. I'm a student.

I have Aetna insurance which required a 90 day pre surgery wright study. My dr had all the necessary info to demonstrate I was a good candidate, they turned I. The pre approval to my insurance on my 90th day and 7 business days later, I had my approval. Surgery was then scheduled about 10 days later, because of Christmas.
I think insurances want you to jump through hoops hoping you’ll forget wanting the surgery!!!

Most definitely. I have Medicaid. It's a super common, super free insurance. So I'm like "Oh yeah, they are going to make this hard for us."

I have Blue cross/blue shield of Illinois (I live in idaho) they require 1 nutrition class, 1 psych evaluation and to have a certain BMI (which I do) my surgeon wanted an upper GI x ray done to check for reflux and hiatul hernia. I do not have to do any kind of supervised weight loss program. My first appointment with the surgeon was January 8th. My last required appointment is tomorrow morning with the psychologist. Then everything will be submitted to insurance. I am really hoping for an early to mid February surgery date because I am going to England at the end of May and I want to have lost some serious weight by then!
