its released in one of two ways LOL.. from above or below!!!.. i was lucky and it came out from above.. but man there was a burp with every sip. I did not have the pains, just the gas. I think it took almost 2 weeks to be completely gone.

I had surgery in 2013. Flatulent is a constant problem ever since. Surgeon said I’d probably have to live with it. Good luck.

It's gas that they pump into the abdominal cavity during surgery, to help lift the diaphragm away from your stomach so that they can see better. Mine manifested especially around my shoulders and my chest area though it went away after a couple of days or so.

I do have some gas like pains that have come back, but I am not certain whether or not they are related directly to the gas that was pumped into my stomach during the surgery.

I'm going to a high school class reunion in August 2019. It's not the reason I'm doing this, but I will admit that I'm pretty excited about great I will look by then! 🙂

Yes, they pump your abdomen full of gas during the operation and that causes discomfort. The gas eventually works its way into your colon and out the usual exit.

I'm probably the last, with a date of February 25--so I'll get to hear what all of you went through before it's my turn.
I don't mind an afternoon surgery--it gives the surgeon time to warm up! 🙂

I almost never cheated the first year. I occasionally go off-plan now (I've been in maintenance for two years), but I weigh myself every day and have a certain upper-limit weight. Whenever I go over that, it's all hands on deck - I stick to my plan 100% until I get back down below that number again.

I am 8 months post op and at my goal weight. I make sure I get my protien in first before anything else. If I'm craving something sweet, I eat cocoa almonds. They are low carbs but tricks me into thinking I'm cheating lol. If i make sweets for my husband and kids i allow myself a nibble. A nibble is all I need. If i eat more than that i get a stomach ache. I try and make good choices but I also am human and make mistakes. I just get right back on track.

We did that last year on our return from Canada in June. We ticked "yes" to the streams, farms, etc box and got taken into the other line. When I told the guy we'd been gold panning in the Columbia River in BC he laughed and sent us on our way.

Emz, my psych evaluation was basically like smedae described. He wanted to know why I was doing this, how much I knew about the support and lifestyle changes, what my support network was like, etc. It was a non-event.

I usually tick that I have been to a farm or hiking in some remote area like Africa or Vietnam. It means I have to go through the something to declare route and generally They wave me through quicker than the nothing to declare route

    Hey EmzBee--

What is the phsyc eval like in New Zealand? I'm in the United States and I was surprised at how limited mine was. All the psychiatrist did was give me a quiz of about 100 true of false questions. I take meds for both anxiety and depression and that wasn't even discussed. She seemed to want to know about my outlook about food, ensure I knew what life would be like after surgery, whether I had a support team, and general stuff--nothing too invasive. The meds never came up (even though I listed them). Some of the questions on the assessment were sort of funny to me--like "true or false, you were on the cover of 50 magazines during the past year." I think the assessment was to ensure I wasn't delusional. Some folks have issues with that. I think you will be fine, especially if you talk about what you are anxious about re: the surgery. But, like I said, it might be a lot different in New Zealand! Best wishes!

Jyta, I know EXACTLY what you mean, because I've thought the same thing as well! This was one of the reasons I waited three years before finally taking the plunge. I'm having bypass on February 25, and the answers I've read here have reassured me as well.
As some have said, my life before surgery has in many ways been all about food--always thinking about my next meal and what I would eat. Now it will be more about how much and when I need to eat. I can live with that if it means being a healthy and active!

Thanks, MMME. I've been looking at the food photos on another thread, and I see that Silly Kitty eats lots of meals on planes. It's very hard to know what it's going to be like on the other side, and sometimes I imagine it's going to be really difficult to find suitable things to eat outside of my own house.

Thanks, Elcee. I think that powder Protein packets (and lots of water) are the way to go. Thanks for the reminder about the strict biosecurity rules. We went on a cruise from Sydney once and admitted we had stepped in "wild" Water in New Caledonia and had a long secondary screening as a result.

I flew from Perth Australia to Canada only 5 weeks post op. I didn't bother with Protein Shakes, just had regular airline meals and ate the Protein only - chicken, eggs, etc. I asked the flight attendants for Water constantly so I was not dehydrated at all. The majority of the flight across the Pacific is overnight anyway, so sleep as much as you can.

You can order all sorts of special airline meals, there should be something that will suit you. Other than that pack healthy Snacks ( not liquid) but make sure you consume them all before you get off the plane in Australia. We have very strict biosecurity rules and if you try to smuggle food in the sniffer dogs will get you.

If you really want Protein Shakes bring the kind that get mixed with Water. You will be able to get that on the plane. I also suggest leaving the shake in its individual packet so it looks like what it is rather than some kind of illegal drug

That's right - I remember you saying that before. Take me with you!

One other hint - check the meal options (they won't have specific foods, but will have different types) - see if they have something that looks healthier (maybe a heart healthy, or something like that?) and select that. You can eat it or not, depending on how you feel on the day.

YOu can take powdered shakes, a shaker bottle, and ask for milk. Also, some flights will have a fruit/cheese plate. You can take things like cheese, parm chips, etc. Take a water bottle and fill it after security and before the flight. Continually fill it during the flight. Make sure you get up and walk a bt every hour or so. Find a place to stretch. And, most importnat - enjoy the trip. I am SO jealous

My airline meals are usually amazing, I also usually purchase & eat yogurt, Jerky, Protein Bars or nuts from the stores in the airports. Also Water and sleep.
