IMO, dealing with real life eating is a good skill to have. You won't always be able to only eat food you cook yourself. Additionally, succeeding after WLS does not require perfection. Plenty of us have had great success, and have eaten non ideal foods :)

    And about stomach stretching....

I just finished watching the whole video and its crazy how info varies between doctors. I was told to not do any of these myths, except the carbonation. My surgeon and dietician said that doesn't stretch it just all depends on whether I tolerate the gas or not. Its definitely something to think about, but you're right. I won't always be able to eat food i cook so I guess its another skill I need to learn.

So many things i need to learn! lol my list keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Okay so we really do love long posts.
I’m the queen of them TBH.

it really sucks to get stuck in an emergency situation and not know exactly what’s in something, but I feel like you made a fine choice.
Besides, it’s not like you planned to go off course and you’ve been planning and staying the course so it’s all good.

One day back when I was still in the first 4 months post-op, I had a similar situation.
Left my cottage cheese out in my car and it was a few hours before I realized and it was prolly at least 90 degrees outside.
So I ordered lunch off of my Panera app (we don’t get breaks at my job and I’m prohibited by law to leave the premises) and got a turkey avocado sandwich.
Even though I ate only the insides, I got a piece of bread in a bite and it tasted God-awful and made me feel horrible that I had left my planned lunch in the car.
After that, I brought emergency food to work like packets of bari-oatmeal and the bariatric hot cocoa that I keep in my cubby.

Oh well, we live and learn.

True, I just don't won't to sabotage myself so I tend to over think everytime I eat something that I bought or didn't cook.

I didn't even think about how my body would react if I ate normal bread. Hopefully now you are able to eat whole grain carbs here and there. I have a mini fridge on my desk where I keep fairlife milk but maybe I need to keep an emergency meal in there. Thanks!

@FluffyChix got me all salad-jonesing, so I went and fixed myself a Ginormous salad too!

This sucker is a whopping 383 calories (majority of which is from the avocado, yum) and I was literally giddy to sit down and eat it. To my great disappointment, I barely made a dent. This is what it looks like almost 2 hours later....just not feeling it today! On the bright side, Mr. and I are going out with friends tonite so that means more room for tequila, right? :P

    383 calories - 22g Protein - 10g NET carbs - 25g fat

I’m starting to see a lot of avocado on this thread. I love it!🥰😉

I hated eating out early on when i had no clue how food was prepared.

Luckily a roux is unlikely to cause any stretching in a single sitting (repetitive over eating over long periods more likely if anything and even that is rare / mostly people just eat excess cals by grazing)

Oh and we ❤ long post

Yes! I absolutely cant stand it especially when its unplanned. As of now I try to avoid it as much as possible but this Sunday I do know Im going out for Breakfast with the fam. That should be easier since i can just get plain eggs.

Thats good to know, thanks. Ive been paranoid about stretching.

And I just realized i spelled roux wrong smh.

  5. Forgot my lunch bag at home so I was forced to buy something at the cafe downstairs. Salads looked like they were going bad so I ended up with chowder.

Can someone tell me why I felt immensely guilty while eating it?? I felt like I was cheating or something. Maybe because i dont know how its made and whats in it? The closest thing I can compare it to is Chupe de Camarones which is a Peruvian milky shrimp and seafood Soup (see google pic below). I know thats made with evaporated milk but chowder im guessing a heavy cream with a rue?? Omg as I continue writing this now I'm thinking I just had flour ... I dont want to stretch my pouch 😭

ALSO, i feel like every time I post my meal on this thread i write a novel of unneeded info or a paragraph full of questions so I apologize for that lol i can talk a lot in person... as well as overthink.

Hecks no. I never worked out pre-op. I barely even walked. I was in terrible shape and would avoid anything that would have me getting sweaty or out of breath or hurt my feet or knees...which was basically everything.

Now I can honestly say that I love running. I also regularly enjoy hot yoga, zumba & swimming. I think I stated to like it based on on how I felt afterwards (endorphins, baby), and the sense of accomplishment. I feel like all that and a bag of chips after I finish a run or when I can keep up with the yoga instructor...my already inflated sense of confidence gets even more inflated. I love it, LOL.

P.S. I do really hate strength training though. I do not enjoy it one bit and am generally angry when I do it, for reals...which is why I only do 15 mins of it a day....but i have seen results from it so I keep at it. It's a necessary evil.

Maybe I just need to dive in and try something hoping i like it. The way you were pre-op towards exercise is the way i am now. I hate sweating and I get out of breathe easily.

Its crazy what a ton of extra weight can do. When I was younger I was a very active tomboy who loved sports and was good at most of them. I was the one picked first on teams and i didn't care about getting dirty. That's not me anymore. I'm 26 now (still young although i don't feel like it) and the weight changed me to the point where I too, barely walk.

I would love just 1% of that confidence you have! lol it'd be a miracle if I was doing all the activity you do.

Ill keep that strength training in mind. I know im going to have a ton of lose skin... its already starting 😕

Anyone having problems with keeping down food one day and then the next nothing? Or still hesitant on buying a scale?

Yes girl! I have zero issues now except for lamb (its too tough on my pouch, might wait longer) but trust me it will get better. During the first 2 months I couldnt keep anything down including Protein Shakes. I just got so sick and nauseated, it was awful.

What do u do when u can't keep food down all day

Sent from my 5032W using BariatricPal mobile app

I tried to eat different things everyday. Some days i didnt eat even during pureed stage, other days I was able to hold something down. Ill be honest though, I think you need to just listen to your body and continue trying. I wasnt even able to hold Water down because it made me sick too but for some reason I felt like I just wanted to try a fresh homemade juice so I did and I was able to keep it down! I did some fresh squeezed orange juice with a lot of water added to it and then tried a passion fruit juice I made from the pulp. I was finally able to get some Fluid in me because I just listened to my body.

As far as food, I tried something different everyday. I started with eggs but that didnt work, then tuna, tried Protein shakes again, still nothing. I was throwing up left and right. I cant tell you the amount of different things I tried each day. I was literally living off of my glasses of passion fruit juice. I started getting a strong craving and a want to try watermelon, mind you I never really ate watermelon before surgery and to my surprise I was able to tolerate it! The watermelon helped me get more fluid in and feel better.

Know that I did speak to my surgeon and dietitian before going the fruit route and they gave me the ok to continue it because it was the only thing my body wanted. They were more concerned about preventing me from dehydration then the protein. I couldnt even look at meat or protein shakes without gagging. They told me sometimes we just have to give the body time to normalize which is what I did. My body took 2 months to normalize, more time than the average, but I came out stronger.

Just know you will eventually feel better and this is just a hurdle you need to go through. Hopefully you are not as bad as I was. Keep trying and keep listening. Im not saying if your body is wanting a pepperoni and cheese pizza to go for it, but run everything by your team and try things that are within reason.

Good luck! ❤️ we are cheering for you!

I find that it is a lot easier eating out than I thought it would be!

Not for me! Im struggling eating out lol Im not necessarily making bad food choices when I eat out but I struggle to find something good enough to eat and that im able to log in my food journal. I dont know what kind of salad dressings the restaurants I go to use so Im unsure of the calories. Also, im not always craving salad when I eat out so I have no clue what to get. I dont eat bread, rice, or Pasta at all and I feel weird asking for ... let say a burger but with no bun. Ive tried asking once and OMG the look they gave me lol smh

  9. Wow! It sounds like you went through a whole wave of crap just to be able to keep your date. Im sorry that happened to you but Im also happy you are now approved! I cant imagine having doctors supporting you one moment and the next flat out tell you what your doing is wrong. I was always against this surgery from day one of becoming obese. The only reason why I did it was because I noticed I wasnt losing on my own, my weight just kept going up, and my family started getting concerned as well as my pcp. I should have done it years ago but my stubborn a** wanted to lose the "natural" way.

Reading your story has made me grateful for my team of doctors and everyone else who gave me information on the surgery to help me make the decision on my own.

Thank you MarvelGirl. That’s what I’m doing , and was just hoping I was doing it right , so thank you. for putting my mind at rest 😊I don’t see how we can increase the calories if we’re stopping when we’re full, if I tried to eat more I’d be ill!

No problem! :) I would think the only way would be eating foods high in Protein and calories like ground beef or any beef really. I know what you mean though, its tough!

On a side note, I cant wait to see all my august people get to their goal!

I was cleared for everything at 6 weeks (but I was walking since post-op day 1). I didn't actually do more than walking until about 8 weeks though...hot yoga, zumba, rock climbing, upgraded my walking to alternate jogging laps. I also did minimal strength training (and still do), but only because I hate it, not because I can't.

These days I run 5km a day and do 15 mins of strength training on some body part or another every day. (Full disclosure, I was off my running routine for about 2 weeks to due illness and laziness, but am back on the wagon as of this morning!)

Did you always enjoy working out? And if not, what got you loving it? I hate exercising and that seems to be the struggle lol I cant even imagine running everyday...

Still re-living vicariously from my vacay last week:

Had THE BEST late lunch at the art museum last Thursday:
This cheese board and meat platter were TO DIE FOR.
Shared this with hubs and we still left about half of the food.
Sadly the plates were cleared when I made a quick restroom break so didn’t get an after pic.

    That looks soooo good!

@Bastian I'm 3 months(August 27th) out & only can get in between 350-500 calories a day. I can barely complete a meal & it still takes me 30-40 minutes to eat a 5.3oz yogurt. My dietitian told me that this calorie amount is fine but try to get in as much Protein dense foods as possible & keep my liquid intake close to or at 64 ozs. When I get full - STOP EATING! She said this is the crucial stage for my new pouch & over eating is not good therefore trying to get in 800-900 calories is not the goal she wants for me right now. So I am listening to my body, eating high quality Protein meals and getting in the Water.< a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://s.bariatricpal.com/uploads/monthly_2019_12/20191211_090713.jpg.1790c94141916669d23315d38bc25cde.jpg" data-fileid="97296" rel="">20191211_090713.thumb.jpg.ca87fe842bd1571f9f2dd17158c7310d.jpg Start Weight(SW) - 215 Surgery Weight(SW) - 198 Current Weight(CW) - 165 Goal Weight(GW) - 145

How many calories are we supposed to be eating now ? I don’t think I have 1,000 calories

It depends on your team. Everyone is told something different. I was told by my surgeon that 600 - 800 is good right now but my dietitian told me she wants to try reaching that 1000 calorie mark. As long as you're eating what you're suppose to and stopping when full you should be fine.

I no longer know what to eat, since I've found I can eat a little bit of almost anything. And guidance from my program has dropped off a lot.

Every day, I've been eating some variation of:

Sous Vide Egg Bites from Starbucks

A Medium Iced coffee with milk and splenda

salad with grilled chicken and Italian dressing (about half)

    2-3 low-moisture part-skim mozzarella string cheese sticks

    1-2 low-fat greek yogurts

If I put away too many of the very-easy-to-digest yogurts and string cheese, I can easily hit 1000 calories, which worries me.

It sounds like you're doing good but If your scared about hitting over 1000 calories I would replace items such as the string cheese with some kind of dense Protein meal since its more filling. :)

Is it meal ideas you're struggling with?

Hey welcome to the 'i'm such a dork for eating that much ' club :) You are human, we all mess up, BUT now we all have our tiny tummies to protest in a violent manner when we do! LOL

I bet you felt gross and it'll really put you off pushing the limits again :) Don't be mean to yourself, tomorrow is a new day and you can do it right, one meal at a time!

Preach! We all mess up and when we do we just gotta pick ourselves back up again :)

I heart questions like this! :D

I too face a dilemma of this. I can easily eat a small regular side salad with lots of diff watery crisp veggies. And I can eat 2-3oz of Protein. But the question is, should I? Does it really do any damage if I'm kinda "wide open?" Or is it just an opportunity to get in lots of healthy vits and mins from the veg!?!

Will be interested in hearing everyone's opinion and advice girlie!!!

(Also, I've been making a big salad like that and at the meal I will eat almost all the Protein first. Then will eat about 1/2 the salad. I put it away until mid-afternoon snack time when I feel peckish around 4pm. I then eat the rest of the salad and tiny bit of protein that's left.)

AND BTW!!! That big ass salad looks AHHHHHH-MAY-ZING!!! I need it, STAT!!! Like, Get. IN. MAH. BELLEH!!!!!

Exactly!!! Salad is great, lots of nutritional value, low cals, etc but is it best to practice eating small still? Should this only be done after your goal is met? Can it open the door to overeating again? Too many questions lol Looking forward to the advice 😊

I do that too with all my meals. I try to stick to protein first then veggie second if i have room. I just switch this rule up with salad. I do veggies first then protein because I noticed my leftovers were too soggy and I didnt like it so food would go to waste.

    Lol thanks! it was delicious!
