Wow I’m sorry to hear you are going through a rough spot! Please know this though, It will get better eventually! I gad some rough spots too so I know you can do this! I’m a year out now and even with the rough spots would NEVER go back. What saved me was the no taste Protein powder that I could add to broth, juice, Water whatever I wanted. There are a few out there but I used one called GENEPRO that you buy at GNC stores. It’s a smaller scoop and dissolved really good into anything. I remember struggling to get in enough liquids and this stuff saved me. I usually don’t post much anymore since I’m doing good now, but your post touched me because your having a rough time like I did. Good luck and keep thinking about where you will be in one short year 😀

    ***UPDATE ON NAILS***
It’s been a little over a month and my nails are doing ssooooo much better! Still not at 100% perfect maybe 90% better, but they are definitely growing again. Not long movie star nails, but out a few millimeters past the finger tip and no longer sore and ripping and tearing! I eat or drink sugar free Jello every day for the Gelatin that’s supposed to help nails. I have the collagen peptides in smoothies 5 times a week. And I also take the hair, skin, and nails Vitamin every day now. Between the 3 it has fixed my nails and less hair is falling out now too. The Biotin vitamin I was taking since after surgery was worthless in my opinion.

icebarbie got a reaction from Erinrae in 9 months after RNY-Things I have had to say goodbye to
I believe in transparency and if this post helps even one person that is why I am posting it. Would I do the RNY again? Yes. Did I know going in I would have to say goodbye to some foods forever? No.
I keep a list of foods now just in case I would ever forget and how sick they made me. My list is below, please add to it any horrible foods that make you sick!
    Peanut butter
    Beef of any kind
    Most frozen dinners like Stouffers
MSG in foods - Like Chinese and other takeout foods
Greasy and deep fried foods like onion rings
Soups with MSG or grease in them at restaurants
    Most breads, pancakes, and donuts
Super sweet sugary Desserts like chocolate cake
Too much ice cream - I can only take small amounts of plain vanilla ice cream now
Pop or soda NEVER AGAIN ITS TORTURE!!!
Restaurants that are gone for me are Canes, Texas Roadhouse - pretty much most steakhouses, Burger King, all the glorious Pasta at Olive Garden- I can still eat their salad, Rally’s, Krispy Kreme donuts.
I am not a drinker but probably any carbonated drink or beer would kill me!
I’m thankful for the weight lost and healthy body but with it comes a strict new way of eating that will be with me the rest of my life.

I too am 9 months post RNY. Except for Peanut Butter and beef, which I eat occasionally, I'm not sure how I would tolerate eating all the other stuff on your list because that is what I chose to give up based on the advise of my bariatric team. That stuff is what got me to where I was pre-op! I don't miss any of it. I have no problem going to restaurants and Texas Road House is one of my favorites. There is always something I can eat and then I always have leftovers for lunch the next day and probably the day after. I can honestly say nothing makes me sick now but I choose to eat lean healthy nutritious food in very small portions. I don't have to cook for anyone so that definitely helps. For me, it's all my choice and I choose to go shopping for size 4 jeans instead of eating a Krispy Kreme donut. I'm old enough to know I've eaten enough of them in my lifetime and I don't ever want to go back to my old habits. I'm thankful that I was adequately prepared by my team to know that this process took major changes in eating habits for life and some things just aren't worth eating.

I'm sorry you weren't better prepared by your surgeon as to which foods were going to be a no-no after surgery. I guess I was fortunate in that from the first informational session, and repeatedly during my 6 months of nutrition visits they made it really clear that anything more than 5 gms of sugar, deep fried foods, bread and white starches, corn, chips, and crunchy salty Snacks were going to be off the menu permanently. I know all doctors are different and I'm NOT dissing yours, just thankful I was prepared. Hopefully there are still lots of yummy things you can eat. Best to you.

RNY'er here. Year 4 post-surgery. I can't eat a ton of fat in one meal. For example, fish fries (with fried fish and French fries) - that would send me into the bathroom. Or a lot of sugar in one sitting. I also limit things like Pasta and white rice, but I've eaten them without incident. I also have problems with Reuben sandwiches now - not sure if it's all the fat or the sauerkraut or both. Otherwise, I can tolerate pretty much anything at this point - I just can't eat a lot anymore (which is good, of course!)

Sorry you feel sick and many foods you had to give up forever.
This is only my experience and transparency - I'm a sleeve. I don’t get sick. Some foods may sit heavy and I feel bloated. I can tolerate ALL foods. (tolerating anything can a slippery slope with weight loss) I never gave up restaurants. I can order healthy and avoid things that don’t sit well with my stomach.
    All plans are different -
Weight loss Mode: (My list of foods I gave up)
real sugar carbonation processed food bread, white rice, white potatoes and white Pasta (low glycemic carbs - brown rice, sweet potato and whole wheat pasta were allowed on my plan in very small amounts in recipes)- low carb 50/60 grams a day Maintenance Mode:
No foods are off limits. I keep within my maintenance calories and eat I eat mainly healthy. Some days I’m off plan and over calories.. I can eat all foods within reason/moderation. I have carbonated drinks in small amounts.

Thanks for this!! Mine have started peeling down to the quick in the last few weeks. I’ve been doing Biotin for years and had also added l-lysine (supposed to be good for hair , skin and nails 🤷🏼‍♀️) I just ordered some collagen in pill form after reading reviews on Amazon that the powder scan leave a greasy feeling . Don’t know if pill form will cut it or not but if not I’ll switch to the powders. Any thoughts?

Ditto on the collagen peptides. My nails were tearing like a newborn at 5/6 months. Between my Water, Vitamins, extra Biotin and this stuff they’ve come back nice and strong. I started taking it because my face was looking lined and dry. Adding the collagen has really helped with that too. There’s only so much you can do but every little bit helps.

I’m certainly no expert ( sleeved yesterday) but you might try collagen peptides. It’s a taste free powder and you can add it to anything. I feel like it’s helped me with hair and nails- but that may be because I WANT it to be helping. Maybe read up on it and see if it’s worth trying.

Are taking Biotin or a Hair-skin-nail formula pill yet? A lot of girls swear it helps. 6.5 months out, hmm, your nails may have grown out to the stress point of your surgery, that might keep them weak. Keep them trimmed down, that way they won't catch and tear. Band-aid them if you must, are you getting enough Protein in? My late Mama made me drink Knox unflavored Gelatin with orange juice mixed in. Did it work? She never let me have a chance to find out.✋😝✋

My thumb nails are bad & big toe nails are bad. I had a RNY 11 months ago. I also have a crack at the corner of one of my nails most of the time from my skin being so dry.
Wish I had an answer for the both of us!
