Low BMI Rate of Weight Loss?

I started at BMI 37 (104kg) and now I'm BMI 21 (59kg). My lowest adult weight ever. My surgeon expected my to get down to 70kg. Reached goal in 9 months and have maintained the loss (within +/- 1kg) for the last 9 months. I was a constant yoyo dieter and was so worried that the surgery wouldn't work for me. I made it work for me ☺️

    This Pre-op diet is a b$@!:

It's so different surgeon to surgeon I didn't even have a pre-op diet, just had to fast from midnight the day before.

I didn't have a stall at all, and I lost 100 pounds. Everyone is different! Stick to your plan and see how you go.

    Lowest Weight?

I stopped losing at around 9 months after surgery, at 59kg. Have been maintaining within a kg of that weight since July. I'm also very scared of gaining weight again, but I do a lot of exercise to counterbalance the extra food I can eat at 15 months post surgery. My husband did ask if I was still losing weight and told me I look "pointy" the other day, so I think my body is still changing due to the weight classes I do, although my weight is stable. I had the surgery so I wouldn't need to go on another diet again, I believe I've found a healthy balance of food intake vs exercise and it's working so far for me.

    Too old for plastics?

Speaking as a 39 year old, I can officially state you are not old 😂😂. Seriously though there is no age limit on anything. I'm planning on getting a breast lift and 360 body lift next year, to tighten up my loose skin left after 100 pounds of weight loss. As other posters have said, your skin may improve with time, doing pump classes three times a week for the last 6 months has considerably improved my skin. And my muscle tone.
  7. I didn't really exercise until at least 6 months post sleeve, and even then struggled with energy levels. I hit goal weight at 9 months post op, and then worked on getting my fitness up and lifting weights to build muscle mass. Give it time, I literally could not manage structured exercise at 3 weeks out, I was weak from lack of food!

Does Your Tummy Rumble a Lot?

Yes! I'm 13 months out and it's embarrassing at work. Mainly when drinking though, food isn't an issue 🤔

How Often Do You Weigh Yourself?

Once a month, as I'm in maintenance. Although I do have a cheeky morning weigh every now and then to check I'm on track. Old habits die hard....
  11. I'm 13 months post vsg and I can literally eat everything I ate pre surgery, with no issues at all. The key is to retrain yourself to make better food choices, then you can afford to have the less optimal choices occasionally. I go by the 80-20 rule, try to eat at my best 80% of the time, allowing treats and other stuff 20%. Maintenance is a whole new ball game after the weight loss phase, I do a LOT of weights and exercise to allow me to eat more in maintenance and maintain my weight. And that includes the odd piece of cake at work for birthdays 🥳
  12. I can and do take large gulps of water. It does get easier. Still can't eat and drink at the same time though, I think that will be permanent.
  13. I took me months. Honestly, existing on very limited amounts of food in the early stages meant that I was constantly in a state of exhaustion and brain fog. It gets better, but it did take a while. Now at 13 months out I feel better than I ever have, so just keep on eating your protein, taking your vitamins and drinking your water!

    Trouble Urinating

I needed a catheter for over 24 hours after surgery and it took a while to feel normal again after my VSG. I was also told it was the anaesthesia.

    Anyone 30-31 BMI pre op?

And I have noticed that with an increase in exercise, I have an increase in hunger to fuel it!

    Anyone 30-31 BMI pre op?

I was 37 BMI on surgery day, am now 20 BMI at 12 months post surgery. I lost 100 pounds in 9 months, and have been maintaining the loss for the last three months. Generally people who start at lower BMIs have better results than those who start higher, according to the research on previous patients my surgeon is tracking. I didn't start at the gym until at least 6 months out of surgery, I was too tired and my food intake was not high enough to sustain exercise. Now I go to the gym and do bodypump 3 days a week, and Pilates once a week, and I feel amazing. I lost he majority of my weight doing no formal exercise.

Here On Out A Win, Win

I'm getting comments about being too thin, and the "don't lose anymore weight!" comment crops up a lot. I've been maintaining my 100 pound loss the last three months, and going to the gym a lot, so not losing weight but gaining muscle which is making me look slimmer. I'm hoping my fat redistributes, as I look a bit "stringy" with my muscles and loose skin haha. I'm expecting a talking to from my surgeon when I go for my 12 month follow up in a few weeks, as I was told to stop losing weight 12kg ago. I didn't have a lot of choice, it just came off.....and now I'm working hard to keep it off.

    Gastric Sleeve - Outpatient

After my sleeve the anaesthesia affected my bladder, and I needed a catheter for 24 hours. Plus I was drugged out on self dosed fentanyl through my IV during that time as well. I was pretty sad when they took that away! It took 48 hours for me to feel comfortable going home, and even then they were going to keep me in an extra night if I couldn't get a certain amount of fluids down. So if I was you, I'd hang around for a few days, I don't think I could have handled a two hour drive so early on. When you do drive, make sure you have a pillow to hold on your belly, it helps. Good luck!

    How long off work

I had 5.5 weeks off, but could have gone back much earlier. I wanted to be back on solid food, as no-one I worked with knew I was having surgery. If you have a desk job you should be fine. Goodluck!
  20. I have lost 100 pounds and have very little visible loose skin while wearing clothes. My stomach, breasts and bum are the worst affected areas which I plan to rectify with surgery. I have been doing bodypump (weights) classes consistently since March and it has made a massive difference. It really helped tighten my skin and I now have visible muscle in my arms and back. If not for the belly skin I'd have visible abs!!!!! I know they are in there lol. I think it is the luck of the draw as to how much loose skin you end up with, I think genetics and age play a big part. I've also had three breastfed babies so some of the damage to my breasts and stomach stem from that.
  21. I've lost 45kg total since my sleeve in October 2019 and I feel amazing! Still have days when I feel big, but then I take pictures like this and think holy cow! I've been doing bodypump classes and I'm even seeing some baby muscles in my arms and legs, and it's really helped with my loose skin. Now to work on maintaining, which has always been the hard part of weight loss for me.
  22. I've made a conscious decision not to eat and drink together as I want to maintain my sleeve's restriction for as long as I can. So I always wait at least half an hour after meals to drink, sometimes longer depending on how dense the food was. Like others have said above, it's my normal now. I do miss having a cup of tea and a piece of cake - but that combo was what helped me get into the position where I needed a sleeve! Plus the one time I tried it, by eating pumpkin soup and bread together, I spent a very unpleasant 30 minutes vomiting it all up. So I'm not really tempted to try again.

    Swimming after sleeve

I was swimming at around 5 weeks when we took an overseas holiday. I kept my incisions out of the sun as UV can make scars darken.
  24. I've had three kids, breastfed them for a combined total of 7.5 years and have yoyo dieted my whole life. My breasts are the first place I gain and lose. Now I've lost 100 pounds with my gastric sleeve. My breasts are basically just skin and nipples at this point. I'm going to ask for a referral to a plastic surgeon at my 12 month post op appointment, when I've been stable at my goal for at least 4 months. I really just want a lift, and have since my first pregnancy saw me go up 5 cup sizes in the space of weeks. There was no coming back from that for my poor boobs. I'm curious to see what plastic surgery can do for me, whether a lift will be enough or they will suggest implants. I really hate how they look and feel now, more so than any other part of my post wls body. Even my elephant butt lol.
  25. Not everyone. I wasn't. All doctors have different regimes for pre-op.
