  1. Yes! Purée 2 days after discharge. Soft foods 2 weeks out. The weird difference is that I can’t have full solids til 3 months. My Surgeon goes by research that shows that most leaks happen under 3 months because your stomach is still healing. He’s the only doc at the Bariatric Hostpital that has this rule though. I can tell my NUT doesn’t agree with him though.

  3. I had a big scale victory this morning! 26 days out and I am seeing a substantial weight loss. I have found that I need to increase my calories when my body starts stalling. That seems to be my body but it may not work for everyone. The hard part is I never feel like eating.

My next goal is to hit the 50 lb mark by 6 weeks. It may be a stretch but it won’t crush me if I don’t make it.

Just found this site - I had my sleeve surgery on October 8, 2018. I was back at work on day 4 (desk job). Everything went great and I have lost 25 lbs in 5 + weeks.

My only complaint is my tastebuds decided to revolt and nothing I eat tastes good. I can only have 3 bites of anything, why can't those 3 bites taste good? I would rather not eat anything than suffer through something yukky. Yes, I know I must eat. It is the only complaint I have post-op. Everything else is awesome.

Yeah, my tastebuds are apethetic right now. I don’t find Joy in eating right now but I think that’s a good thing for me. It’s all about finding foods that will nourish me that don’t repulse me.

I was cleared for any food I wanted - even beef - at 2 weeks.

The irony of this is... all food tastes like crap to me. I am living on crushed ice and a bite or two from a very short list of food that doesn't make me want to puke at first sight. 🤢

My surgery was on 10/08 and I am down 25 lbs.

    That’s crazy! 2 weeks?

All docs are so different. I think I’m on the other end of the spectrum from you. I won’t be cleared for full solids until 3 months.

  6. Thanks for sharing! My story is so similar to yours. I was scared to face my surgeon bc I thought I had failed. By the time I went back, my surgeon had been retired for years. I started off with a new one making aggressive folks and it worked. Unfortunately one two many times of throwing up bc of crazy restriction and I had a major slip. The bad was removed immediately. I thought I could do it by myself but eating just what doesn’t get stuck in the Band doesn’t translate to real life, sustainable eating. I gained it back this last year. I was sleeved on 10/22-almost 1 year exactly from my band removal.

Its happening with everything. I'm 4 weeks out. My surgery was on 17 Oct.

I’m sorry to hear that. My best guess is GERD. I would speak with your docto about it. I’m taking Pepcid to prevent mine but also carafate if it gets bad. Mine gets bad when I have an empty stomach but having it makes me not want to eat so it’s a bad cycle.

So, my follow up went well. I had to eat food that I could smash with a fork and flaky fish for the week. I can move on to solid food. I'm nervous because everything I eat or drink makes me burp non stop. I dont know what's going on. This morning I couldn't finish a scrambled egg and Beans. I burped so much I ended up throwing up some. This is crazy. I even keep chewable anti gas at the dinner table and one on my nightstand.

Anyone else have this issue? Will it stop?

How many weeks out are you? I know a lot of people have difficulty with egg. It goes down for me but it certainly sits different than other foods. I had some hiccups after only a couple of bites of egg white yesterday. Does it happen with all foods or just some of those higher stage foods?

Glad to hear you've had some positive changes, Jessa! And I hear you. It's seriously hard to imagine focusing too much on anything other than recovery and success with post-op stuff right now. I don't even know how I'm filling my days now, but it's all surgery-related for the most part (researching recipes, tracking liquids, etcetc). Best of luck with your sleeve!

Tons of positive changes! I guess when I’m going through changes, I just change everything!

Yeah, trying to explain my days right now is hard! You too, dear!

    Hi friends!

As I sit here on my second week off to recover (RNY was last Tuesday, exactly a week ago!), focusing on my fluids and Protein intake, I can't help but dread going back to work. And it's not because I'm physically ill still or anything. I wouldn't mind going back to some other activity, just don't want to go back to this one. I've been meh about my career for years but ya know...pays the bills, has the insurance that pays for the RNY, etcetc.

So...just curious. Do we have any dramatic tales of rejuvenating one's life after surgery, saying "screw it" and marching in a new direction?

Yes, I have experienced this twice. I seem to go through big changes in my life when I go through big physical changes. I previously had a lap band that took 6 years for me to start losing weight with. Once I did, my marriage fell apart. My marriage that I thought was super strong, to my high school sweetheart. Once my weight got down and I was maintaining it, I upgraded my job. I have always been in sales based interior design but now I was seeking and getting multiple job offers for a lot higher paying jobs with better benefits. I even got a promotion to manage my own design firm within 3 months of working for the company. Next was my Tummy Tuck and through that process I decided that I was tired of working for others and missing out on things in my kids lives. So I decided to open up my own business and work from home by the time I was done with my FMLA leave. My band failed & had to be removed and I gained back most of my weight. I just had the sleeve and although I don’t want to change my job bc the lifestyle it affords me is too good to pass up, I just don’t have a ton of interest in it right now. I am consumed by all things bariatric surgery.

I’m not sure that helps you but short answer, yes.

I'm 1 will out from surgery. I'm doing well except I'm very weak. My surgeon said only eat if hungry. I'm never hungry! I eat yogurt, protien enhanced Jello, Protein Shakes and strained Soup. Was just able to drink Water today without pain. Loosing 9 lbs in a week seems extreme. I just have no appetite! Is anyone else having this issue?

In my experience this is typical. I felt good but week for a couple of weeks. I have low blood pressure and heart rate so my body forced me horizontal a lot. I’m 20 days out and just now feeling stronger.

Make sure you’re hitting your Fluid goal every day and then your Protein. I had to work up to my protein a bit. Protein Water helped me because I have a hard time drinking shakes.

You’re healing from surgery. It takes a lot of energy for your body to do that. I had rapid weight loss in the first 10 days because of it.

  12. I went to a bariatric specific hospital so my insurance advocate had it on her calendar to request my records from my PCP the day after my last appointment. She submitted it that day and she called me 2 days later with the approval. From there it took 2 buisiness days to get scheduled. My surgery ways 10 days from scheduling. I’m pretty sure my experience is best case senario. I would just make sure to be your own advocate and follow up and make sure records are getting where they need to go.

  13. I had surgery at an all Bariatric Hospital. I am allergic to Morphine but that’s usually not a big deal, there are plenty of other pain meds out there. I remember waking up post surgery and as I’m in and out the nurse tells the other that she gave me 2 douses of something for the pain. I’m still waking up as they are wheeling me to my room and things are hurting more and more and I’m getting pretty agitated. A nurses assistant comes in and gives me the morphine button and I press it like crazy. Eventually the nurse comes in and tells me that it doesn’t work. I’m getting super agitated at this point and I’m in a bunch of pain. My bed was hurting my skin. Every sense was heightened. I scream “I want to go to a REAL hospital!!!!” Next thing I know, I woke up 6 hours later. 😳

Hello All. Just wondering if what I'm currently feeling is normal. 15 days out, and for the past few days everything I eat just makes me feel nauseated. I'm getting in my Protein and fluids (fairly religiously), and as of Wednesday this week I've been adding in more foods and crackers/toast. But, I'm just not excited about food. Something sounds good, but as soon as I eat it I just feel completely turned off and can barely finish anything except fluids. Normal?? Anyone else? Thanks for listening.

I think everyone’s plan is different. Mine allows me to have toast but not untoasted bread or crackers.

I felt and still feel the same way. Something may sound really good but then I’ll be totally disinterested when I start to eat. Most of the time it’s a chore to eat. I think it’s pretty normal in the beginning. My plan is different than most. I’m supposed to eat every 2 hours right now. Even though it could be as little as a glass of milk, it takes a lot of effort to get it down.

Quick question for the masses. My surgery was on ,10/29 and for the most part things are going ok. But of my five incisions, four look great and have no pain whatsoever. My concern is my fifth incision. It's the larger one on my lower right side used for the liver retractor device. It still hurts...a lot. Sharp pains when sitting or standing and especially when walking. My surgeon looked at it Wednesday and said it is fine because the bruising is almost gone, no swelling, no seepage, no redness and it's not warm to the touch. It's just VERY tender. I wouldn't be so concerned if I was still having any sort of pain or discomfort with the other incisions but because this is the only pain I am experiencing and it doesn't seem to be improving I am concerned.

Only a doc will know for sure but in my experience, I had pain and soreness for a while. Keep a look out for a fever and red streaking around the incision.

I had my VGS surgery on 10/26. For the last 4 days I have not lost any weight and I am just drinking Protein Shakes, creamed Soup and Water. I am at a stall, is this happening To anyone else. Feeling very frustrated 😞

That’s almost exactly when mine happened. Completely normal. Mine picked back up with 1lb + a day weight loss. Just keep on focusing on water/protein goals.

Two-week postop tomorrow, even though I had surgery on 10/30 🤷‍♀️ I can’t wait for the ok to eat soft foods since my bday is on Saturday the 10th...fingers crossed 🤞
My surgery went pretty well, I mean since I’ve been home I didn’t need to use the pain killers and nausea meds they prescribed but unfortunately I got asthmatic bronchitis right after surgery and am also on steroids and antibiotics which delays the healing process but besides that I am doing great!
What were the first soft foods you guys tried that wasn’t too heavy?

My first soft food was an egg but I hear that it doesn’t go down well for most. I’ve had some ground beef with my ricotta bake the last few days. I’m going to try some tuna salad today!

Anyone else get nauseous from Protein Drinks? I’m having a hard time getting my Protein with the Premier Protein shakes that I LOVED pre op. Too sweet and creamy. 😢

Yes, I do. I can’t even get down shakes that I make myself. I was noticing that I was able to get my fluids or Protein in any given day but not both. I have since started drinking protein waters and they are the perfect solution!

Right with you. Had lap band 12 years ago. Dropped 100 pounds and stayed in the 220's for years. Then the trouble started. Dilated esophagus. Slip. Blah blah blah. Had the band removed a year ago - my doc does not do revisions at time of removal - I had to clear up damage first. Horrible weight gain since removal. I'm getting the sleeve next week. Can't wait.

This was my exact experience as well. 10 years on the Band & 110lbs lost. I had a major slip and had it removed in emergency surgery. I gained 90 lbs back in a year. I just had the sleeve and I’m 12 days post op. I was really great after surgery. I was the first of the 6 patients on my surgery to get discharged. I’ve been feeling great but super weak. I commonly get a vesa-vagal response and it’s acting up. A few times a day it humbles me and makes me lay down. At my 10 day follow up appointment I had lost 14.17% of my excess body weight. The first week it fell off but it’s starting to even out and come off much more slowly now.
