mousecat medical/dietary saga thread
He said I'll still lose weight because of how much more intestine he bypassed? I'm going to ask him if that means mine won't stretch to "fit" 4oz like others normally do because it already is 4oz. I have a running list of questions for next Monday already. lol. On the upside, Senor Ulcer is almost completely gone! I truly wish they could have removed the gallbladder during surgery since it was already diseased looking. I hope this is the end of my saga. He said if I am still sick after the gallbladder is removed, they will do a revision to make the pouch smaller and remove some intestine. Not thinking about that at this point. I think I'd rather just stay nauseous than have any revisions done.

mousecat medical/dietary saga thread
Just using this thread as a running list of my medical/dietary commentary and questions. lol. Called the doc to move up my appointment since I can't eat and he did an emergency endoscopy today. He said everything he can see looks fine. He said he made my pouch twice the normal size and bypassed more intestine than he normally does "in case" I ever need a revision so he has extra stomach to work with. That kind of annoys me. He said it puts me at a higher risk of ulcers, which I developed. I don't really understand why he doubled the size of my pouch. I still get stuffed off 3oz though. He is removing my gallbladder on the 22nd. Pre-op I had a lot of gallstones, polyps, and calcification, so he hopes removing it will get rid of the nausea. It's bizarre though because everything makes me sick. I never, ever have high fat food. Even 0 fat stuff makes me sick. I hope it helps. GI Swallow on the 7th to see if there's a small bowel stricture he couldn't see in the endoscopy, but he doubts it. In the meantime, I guess I just feel sick for 3 more weeks and hope removing the gallbladder helps? I really don't want more surgery... [emoji53] I hope I can make it 3 weeks. He said if I can't bear it anymore to go to the ER and they will do emergency removal.

My lovely GreenTea, I've lost all senses and shall be writing my tales in Civil War letters henceforth. Aight I'm over it.

Post-Op Gastroparesis
Dearest Emily, It's been 17 days since the sickness began. I fear the nausea knows no end. I've managed to scrape up one egg to fill my belly this day. It almost didn't keep down, but I force it now. 9 days remain until the surgeon comes around. I've kept this journal so that he may see my ills. Concern strikes me as my average intake drops well below 300 a day, and my protein halves. I feel tired, weak. But I must persevere, my love. I can't wait to hold you in my arms again, along with a 6oz filet mignon and sauteed mushrooms. Truly yours, Captain MC88

What to do when dumping?
Yeah, I know. I asked specifically about the hypoglycemia... he said to never add in more sugar because it will make it worse in bypass patients. *shrug*

do you tell your weight lost
It is a rude question for a stranger to ask, imo. The people closer to me know I had the surgery and they'll compliment me and ask how much I've lost but I don't want to say because it's not as much as I'd hoped so far. But since they are closer to me I don't really know how to say no, especially since I'm already in the habit of telling them. Only my one coworker really asks, the others just say "they can tell". I dunno... it is an awkward situation.

What to do when dumping?
I asked my surgeon if having sugar would help when dumping and he said absolutely not. That it would make it significantly worse and is different than diabetics with low blood sugar. Just lay down and riiiiide it out. Best thing for it.

Going thru RNY alone? Need someone overnight?
No one stayed with me in the hospital. My mom stayed for a short while but it was pointless. I just stared into space for the 3 days and watched TV. No one stayed with me when I was home either. No issues.

Post-Op Gastroparesis
everything else makes me sick too. I have nondairy protein shakes and have stopped even having those. I cant have my ham salad anymore or green beans. ;( I have kept a 3 day log for my surgeon so he can see the frequency. and I also averaged my calories and protein over the last 6 days. at 245 calories average and 34g of protein. just waiting for the 7th.

Post-Op Gastroparesis
I figure I'm cursed. 13% of gastroparesis cases occur due to GI surgery. 5-15% of gastric bypass patients get ulcers. So I'm right in that pool of unlucky bastards. Anyways, I'll try not to speculate any further until the 7th when all my greatest fears are realized. LOL.

This will likely occur if I get diagnosed with another stupid random disease. lol. Poop posts included.

Post-Op Gastroparesis
I am in constantttt communication with the doctor's office and they're just like I dunno. Literally have been zero help thus far. The only one who has helped is my surgeon and he is behind a wall of nurses and I have to wait until the 7th. None of them believed me when I complained prior to my ulcer diagnosis and they all thought I was overreacting to postop pain. But my surgeon believed me. Thank God.

Post-Op Gastroparesis
It doesn't hurt to swallow and I don't have any pain or anything. Just massive nausea after I eat after a while. Like badddd. Today I ONLY could get down 1tbsp of cream cheese and 2 tbsp of ricotta (and got sick after both of those) plus had 2 other bouts of nausea. I am eating like 200-300 calories a day and hardly any protein at this point! The other day I had only 10g! The doctor's office knows about all this but I'm still waiting for that appointment. In the meantime I am probably 100% malnourished but I feel so sick I can't stomach anything. It's turning into a real fear of food because I am averse to the nausea.

Post-Op Gastroparesis
Did anyone develop gastroparesis post-op? If so, weave me your tale of symptoms and diagnosis. I am certain my ulcer has healed but I have been severely nauseous since 12/12. I dry-heave constantly. Sometimes it is about 1/2 hour to an hour after I eat... sometimes at random times. Mostly after I eat, and I am on full liquids (with occasional puree) so nothing insane is being digested. Sometimes even water does it to me. I am very careful about portions and eating slowly and properly. I read that the vagus nerve can be damaged post-op and gastroparesis can develop at any time. I am worried this is the case. I don't believe I have a stricture because no food ever comes back up and this happens only about 70% of the time after I eat (and it takes about an hour to set in)... the rest of the time it is random. This is just me spit-balling. I have an appointment on the 7th to go over all of this. But I am really nauseous virtually all day! It's borderline debilitating. The medicine for gastroparesis nausea, Compazine, is the only nausea med that remotely helps. Reglan for motility, also used for GP, has also helped, but knocks me out. lol.

Ya know what's awesome????
Girl, 13lbs in less than 2 weeks is amazing. lol! I am 37lbs in 8 weeks. I am putting the scale away though. Because it doesn't really matter. I'll get there whenever I get there.

Calorie Intake
I am at 2 months and my nutritionist said around 500 calories is about where I should be. Long-term goal is around 1000 (some others are a bit higher). Do you portion everything out and eat only that? That would help keep calories lower. I eat out of 2oz baby food cups and measuring spoons so I never go over. Does your plan say how many ounces you should be eating per meal? That's what you should go by, not calories. Around now I am allowed to move to 5oz-6oz per meal max, but I can't fit that much in. I know some people who can eat basically the same amount, but just because it fits without hurting, doesn't mean you should do it. Def stick to portion sizes and not calorie counts.

'Ropey' Fat/Hard Fatty Nodules?
The only lipoma I had was a GIGANTIC one on the back of my neck (aka the buffalo hump). I had it surgically removed and it was oddly attached to muscles, which the surgeon wasn't expecting. It was definitely sensitive when I pushed on it.

Pain meds after
I was given 14 Percocet and took 2 - it did nothing, lol. The rest has been shelved in case I ever break a bone or something that is actually painful. The surgery was painless except for muscle pain.

Pantry/Fridge/Freezer Purge - Does everyone do it?
I gave away all of my no-no foods right before surgery. Leaving me with just protein shakes, essentially. LOL. I had to go to the grocery store a week out to do the fill-in. My house is 100% bariatric friendly. I live alone, fortunately.
