Effects of Nutrient Deficiency on Skin

Just got off the phone with my surgeon... they said no Spironolactone until 1 year post-op because it's a diuretic. I still have 3 weeks left on the topical they gave me, but it isn't really helping. More just keeps springing up.

    Weight Stall Venting

Update: Still bent out of shape. lmao. 1lb in 2 weeks now. The dietitian said to wait another THREE WEEKS before being concerned. FIVE WEEKS TOTAL? NO WAY. I am going to flip once I hit the three week mark. lmao. Sorry.

    Thirsty!!!!!

I am drinking about 40 to 50 oz a day due to my ulcer, but none of my labs indicate dehydration, but my mouth is dry nonstop. NON.STOP. It is actually driving me nuts. I think it's dry mouth and not thirst. Biotene helps a bit. If it continues by my next surgeon appt, I'm going to ask and will keep you posted. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Weight Stall Venting

I'm down 1 lb in 11 days and I am heated. lol! I'm stuck on bland purees for another 5 weeks and have already been on them 4 weeks. I want to enjoy some food progression with other people, and also not just lose 1 single pound while eating flavorless mush. So bent out if shape right now. 600 pound life!

I can't watch those shows because one of the few times I did, the guy died from a heart attack before he could have surgery. Heartbreaking.

    Liposuction, breast reductions before sleeve

I had both liposuction (2009) and a breast reduction (2017) prior to surgery. Between 2009 and current, I gained massive weight, first in the areas I didn't have lipo, and then in the areas I did. I am not losing weight now in the areas I had lipo any faster than anywhere else. I also regret having the breast reduction done... had I known I would be having WLS, I would have waited... but I didn't expect to and they were severely hurting my back. They will likely be quite saggy when I lose weight... but I have a LOT more weight to lose than you do.

    Tell Me Your Pre-op Timeline

I had an initial consult, 2 nutritionist appointments, 3 nutrition classes I crammed in one day, one set of labs, chest xray, and ecg, (which I did all in one day), ultrasound, 2 psychiatrist appointments, a sleep clinic consult, and a final consent appointment. Was done within 3 months. Would have been sooner but they were booked out. Surgery I had to push out a month even though they had an earlier date due to work. No weight loss requirements or anything. Insurance approved me within 4 days of the surgeon submitting my paperwork. Highmark BCBS.

    Pre Op quitting smoking cannabis

lmao, I figured as much. I was like... why can't you just have a blunt like a normal person, dude. Thanks for almost killing me. lolol. He was like.. I didn't expect... that. X_X but then he goes on to tell me he has a friend that will randomly vomit after dabs. like... helloooo.

    Pre Op quitting smoking cannabis

Yeah, that's why I thought it was very strange. I certainly remember cottonmouth from "back in the day" (I say that like I'm old, but I'm not, lol). I took a single hit off a dab. I didn't eat anything after smoking because of the vomiting... I started getting nauseous from all the spit within about 10 minutes. I actually quit many years ago because pot would make me hypersensitive to my arthritis pain. It would feel like my joint pain was amplified times 100, which I know is also unusual. Regardless, never doing that again! lol. Everrrrr.

Absolute petrified to step foot inside

You are so lucky to have a local Y! I used to drive 45 minutes just to go to one. When you're working with a trainer, you're so focused one-on-one that you really don't have time to notice anyone else. Plus, you never know what they used to look like, either. They could be former weight loss surgery patients, even! Now that I've had surgery, I've opted to set up a home gym so I can look like a half-naked hot mess and do Jillian Michaels DVDs in my underwear, but when I used to go to the gym, I just reminded myself over and over I am only there to get it done and there for me. If I didn't look at anyone else, they weren't looking at me. Kind of like when an iguana closes its eyes to pretend you aren't there.

    Pre Op quitting smoking cannabis

Nah, I don't think so. I kept producing tons and tons of saliva, which started filling up my pouch and making me vomit. I can't even explain how much spit I kept producing. So bizarre. The pain from the vomiting made me start crying, since I hadn't vomited since surgery. I kept having to spit into a trash can because I could not stop producing saliva. It was nutso.

    Sleeve or Bypass... help!

I had occasional acid reflux/heartburn (no formal GERD diagnosis or anything) and bypass was the only viable option I was given (which was fine because that's what I wanted anyways). I personally would not risk making something like that worse after you go through all the trouble of having major surgery. Since the bypass 5 weeks ago, I haven't had an instance of reflux or heartburn once. It's amazing. Would never have considered sleeve and the surgeon was pretty adamant that sleeve is not a real option for anyone with reflux.

    Pre Op quitting smoking cannabis

From a totally flipped perspective and a word of caution for post-op...I am 5 weeks post-op and I was NOT a smoker (not for like 15 years anyways) and decided to smoke some yesterday... my stomach pouch hurt in a way I cannot even explain. I don't know if it was too soon post-op to try something like that but I ended up vomiting up saliva and mucus for half an hour and crying and dry-heaving. I was just *waiting* for blood to start coming up. I don't know if it's because I just was not a smoker and was sensitive to it, or if I simply cannot tolerate stuff like that with the new stomach. But I felt so horrific last night.

Drinking While Eating and Pouch Question

It's really different the full feeling. It's an entirely new sensation that can't really be fully understood until you have the surgery. lol. It doesn't exist pre-op.

Drinking While Eating and Pouch Question

If something gets stuck in your throat, like what totally happened to me Saturday with the spices irritating my throat, taking a small sip to clear it won't kill you or anything. lol. They just don't want you drinking with your meal, regularly. But... please... if you're choking... drink something. Haha

Drinking While Eating and Pouch Question

I can just tell you my personal experience with fullness. I don't know specifically how long food stays in the pouch and I don't feel full in the same sense I did pre-op. When I am "full", I can feel the food almost pushing back up my throat a little bit, or I feel like a heaviness. That's how I know I ate just a little too much, so I stick with pre-portioned stuff 85% of the time. I know I am getting ready to be done because I burp a little. That's when I 100% know to stop. Liquids pass through super quickly. Like within a minute quickly. You shouldn't eat and drink at the same time because a) overtime it will stretch your pouch (biggest issue), b) the liquid will make it so you can't eat more, which you should and c) you risk flushing things through, which may cause upset stomach or worse. And no straws because with straws you are sucking air into your pouch, again... stretching and taking up space... probably will make you gassy, too.

Effects of Nutrient Deficiency on Skin

Yeah, it's pretty embarrassing. I've always had a small amount of acne on my forehead from the oil from my bangs, but generally reasonably clear skin my whole life. But right after surgery... BOOM... 13 year old boy status.

Effects of Nutrient Deficiency on Skin

This is current with a heavy powder concealer over it and 3 weeks on a topical treatment so far. Without the concealer it is redddddd(er). That whitehead on my chin randomly just appeared like 4 hours ago. It's along my jawline, too, but I didn't snap those pics. I think most people's skin clears after surgery because they are eating better. I think I am cursed. (I'm 30, by the way, for reference) Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. So, I went out last Saturday with a friend to a local bar. No, not to drink (although he did). I had been craving a chicken wing and just wanted one wing. Few things to preface this: First off, I *should* still be on puree due to my ulcer and secondly, DO NOT GET OLD BAY ON A WING IF YOU HAVE AN ULCER. Bad times were had. I confessed to my surgeon Tuesday and he said it was fine... but no spice! Derrrr. Anyways, me being a bad patient aside.... Eating out is so weird! I order 6 wings and a cheese plate. I had the one wing and two cheese cubes and I was stuffed. My friend ate 4 stuffed mushrooms, 12 wings, cheese cubes, and some other stuff. The bartender asked me about 6 times if I wanted a drink, even water, but I kept saying no because I didn't want to risk drinking while eating. Well, then old bay irritated my throat a bit and I wished I had a little sip to wash the spice down. I couldn't stop coughing because the back of my throat got itchy. So, lesson learned... get water... just in case you start choking. lmao. When I was "done" my solo wing, I asked for boxes. The bartender remarked that he was "wondering how I would eat all that food". In my head I was like "dude... before surgery I would have crushed all of this, had an entree, a dessert, and been about 4 vodka sodas deep soooooo." I imagine eating out is going to be quite a unique experience from now on. My friend got all my leftovers because it would have all gone bad before I could even have made a dent. Boxes please!

Eating at a bar... a new experience.

I feel like I am going to start leaving like 40% tips for ordering one small cheap thing and using up one of their tables that they could be making more money on. lol.

Effects of Nutrient Deficiency on Skin

Girl, I have cover-up on, but I can tell you my acne is 5 times worse than this. It is horrific. Neon red, covers my entire forehead. All cystic. Also my chin and jawline have neon red, hard lumps. And right under my nose. It's badddd.

Effects of Nutrient Deficiency on Skin

My dermatologist said if I have high androgen levels, he wants to give me spironolactone. BUT, it is a diuretic and I am still under my hydration goals, so that's a no-no until I am farther out from surgery and well-hydrated regularly. Right now I am on a topical benzoyl peroxide and erythromycin cream for another 6 weeks. They said Retin-A won't help me because mine isn't pore-related... it's all bacterial.

    Weight Stall Venting

My surgeon on Tuesday casually mentioned that most RNY patients lose the most around 4 months. I didn't ask why because I had 1000 questions and it didn't really click at the time. Has anyone else heard this or had this experience? Yes... we are all different and such. But I am wondering why he said that... if he's noticed a trend or maybe it's due to your body finally not believing it's starving anymore?

Effects of Nutrient Deficiency on Skin

That's really interesting because I am low on protein and my hair has turned reddish (which I actually really like LOL) and while usually very oily, it's become very dry and breaking. It's something I'm working on, and I suspected the hair issue was protein. No logical reason for my acne issues other than the hormonal changes though. It started basically Day 2 post-op and went downhill from there. Unf.

Eating at a bar... a new experience.

I am really hoping the ulcer will be cleared by my next appointment, January 7th. I'll give it another month from there before I test my luck on even mild stuff. I am getting a little tired of being on bland, unseasoned puree. My life is greek yogurt, broths, and cottage cheese. But... if I can conquer 10 weeks of puree, I can do anything. hahaha.
