  1. My favourite lunch is red pepper, cucumber, tomatoes, low fat feta cheese, and 2 oz roast chicken breast with a very small splash of balsamic vinegar. It's tasty, filling and adds some crunch to my day.

    Oh the gas!

Walking. Lots of walking around the ward helped get rid of the gas for me. As soon as I was given the OK to get up I did. I only lay in bed when I planned on sleeping - otherwise I was either sitting up in a chair or walking around.
  3. Compassionate Friends was wonderful when my son died. I met some beautiful people there who were the only ones who could truly know what it felt like to lose their child. Kathy, my 20 year old son died in 2016 and his sister (my gorgeous daughter) found a great Facebook group for siblings that she said helped her a lot. Perhaps your granddaughter could look at that? I also joined a Facebook group only for parents who have lost a child. I would be more than happy to send you the names of the groups for your daughter and grandchildren if you would like. Both are specific to suicide (I know your grandson wasn't a suicide, but we have other members in the parents' group who have lost children in a similar manner to your grandson) and in the first few months after my son died they were a great help to me. I do wish your family love and healing from such a terrible tragedy.

    Long Plane Flights

We did that last year on our return from Canada in June. We ticked "yes" to the streams, farms, etc box and got taken into the other line. When I told the guy we'd been gold panning in the Columbia River in BC he laughed and sent us on our way.

    Long Plane Flights

I flew from Perth Australia to Canada only 5 weeks post op. I didn't bother with protein shakes, just had regular airline meals and ate the protein only - chicken, eggs, etc. I asked the flight attendants for water constantly so I was not dehydrated at all. The majority of the flight across the Pacific is overnight anyway, so sleep as much as you can.
  6. I'm so sorry, Kathy. 15 is far too young.
  7. I guess it depends on how much you have to lose. I had a bank in 2009 and lost 33 kg (72 lbs). However by 2018 I had gained back nearly 40 kg. I went straight to bypass and couldn't be happier with my choice. The band was uncomfortable and unsuccessful. As a matter of fact, of the 4 other people I know who have had bariatric surgery there isn't one who has been successful with the band.
  8. Well, I think I've figured it out. I had been eating a lot of protein bars because I don't really like the taste of the shakes. I stopped eating them on Thursday, so none yesterday. Fewer episodes Friday and none so far today. So, I would take a look at what's in your protein supplements - shakes, bars, powders, etc. I found that the ones I was buying were full of whey (which really bothers my tummy) as well as a bunch of artificial sweeteners including malitol, sorbitol, polydextrose and a bunch of other unpronouncable things. One of the nurses I work with was saying that those sweeteners can cause diarrhoea.
  9. Ooh! What's the powder? I started the probiotics last night so I'll give that a week to see how I go (pun intended). If that doesn't work then I'm going to have to try something else. I don't want to give up dairy - I love yogurt, cheese, etc. I will if I absolutely have no choice, but I really don't want to.

    Yuck

I couldn't take them either. They just made me gag trying to chew that horrid thing. And the "chocolate" flavoured one? Um, no chocolate I've ever had tasted that vile! My surgeon said once I was on solids I could use Elevit pregnancy vitamins but I couldn't swallow the (suppositories?) tablets. So...I was in Canada in November and bought 3 bottles of pregnancy gummies that I supplement with B12, iron and calcium. I'm running short now so I'll get my sister to buy me a year's worth and send them over to me. My partner's ex-wife had RNY 6 weeks before I had mine and she loves the BN vitamins. I gave her mine, so I'll ask if she wants the ones from Tas and let you know. (She's in country WA).
  11. Try the local health food store for probiotics. I bought lactobacillus acidophyllus but I don't know if it's going to work. Fingers crossed. I agree about the appetite though. I have a real aversion to food now that I never had before. I used to love food but now I'm just meh about it.
  12. OMG, yes! I was just looking at possible causes for me to have to go to the toilet 6 or 7 times a day with loose, foul I've found an article about diarrhoea after RNY and it says a lot of people uncover an previously unidentified lactose intolerance so the first step is to cut out dairy and see if that helps. Second thing is to try is a course of probiotics to see if that helps restore the flora in the bowel. It also says that you can try a low dose of Imodium or similar at nighttime to help prevent the early morning run to the loo. I'm going to start probiotics tonight. I bought some lactobacillus acidophyllus capsules so I thought I'd give that a go for a week to see if it helps. If not then I might see the GP to see if I C. diff. grows on culture. Annoyed

I said previously in another post that a woman at my work keeps commenting "oh, you've lost weight". One day I got pissed off with it and looked at her and said back "Oh, it looks like you've gained weight". That shut her gob pretty quick. Commenting on someone's weight is like saying "Oh, you finally got rid of that hump on your back" or similar. Your healthy weight loss is none of their damn business. I have told the people I feel I want to tell but other than that it's not up to anyone else to comment on my weight, or any other part of my anatomy/appearance.
  14. Totally not weight related, but my partner's mum was from Tipperary. I think we're going to Ireland for a few days in August when we go to the UK for my brother in law's 50th birthday to see his cousins.

    Weight Loss Meds???

Precisely. Topiramate is an antiepileptic medication used off label for weight loss. I was part of a drug study back in the mid-late 1990's testing the efficacy of Topamax for weight loss. Instead of helping me lose weight, it caused me to have horrible neurological symptoms. I had absence seizures, lost the ability to find words (I can remember talking to my husband and not being able to find the word for dinner - I kept asking him what he wanted for "um, um, that thing you eat at 6 pm".

    Ancestry.Com and such Things

A friend of mine and his twin sister did the Ancestry DNA thing. One lives in the US and the other lives in Ireland (where they're from). They had completely different results, even though they are twins. I have a bit of a problem with me handing over my DNA to a company for "fun" with no guarantee of who or what will have access to it. I know I have at least one hereditary disease in my family but I'm not sure I want to have some corporate body having access to know about whether I have the gene or not. It is my decision as to whether I get tested for the condition, and it would piss me off tremendously if my life insurance/travel insurance/health insurance was suddenly cancelled because I have the defective gene and therefore will most likely contract a terminal illness and they found out because Ancestry or whoever sold my genetic code on. My dad did a genealogy search of both sides of my family some years ago. He traced his family in Ireland back to the 1600's and my mother's family in England back to the 1700's. I'm pretty certain of my heritage.
  17. Having my gallbladder out was a breeze. I was only in hospital overnight and back to work after about 4 days. Once it was gone I had no more pain or nausea (I too got nausea from EVERYTHING I ate, not just fatty stuff). Good luck with it.
  18. Happy birthday Frustr8. Wishing you many happy returns of the day. Have a virtual slice of cake. (I have a small cake business from home and can attest that this particular one was lovely! It was a 6 layer rainbow sponge with Swiss meringue buttercream icing)

    Let the lying begin . . .

Thank you. I'm not sure about whether it's harder or easier. I never really thought about it. They both inherited their paternal genes though. Blondes with very strong Nordic appearance. And thin. My daughter weighs about 105 lb and she's 5' 4". My son was 5' 11" and weighed about 160 soaking wet. Me? Short with dark hair and blue eyes and freckles - very Irish looking.

    Let the lying begin . . .

I'm the youngest in my family. Now I look like my older sister! There's something to be said for facial fat - it really smooths out those fine (ok, deep) wrinkles and lines That could be my daughter. She is so much like her father's side of the family it's unreal. Her brother (2 years younger) looked so much like her people used to ask if they were twins. I have a photo of him from about 2 weeks before he died and he looks exactly like his father did at age 20. Clearly my family's genes were the weaker genes.

    Let the lying begin . . .

One of the volunteers in the hospital I work at kept saying "Oh, you've lost weight". I don't know this woman and I don't comment on her weight - or anything else about her general appearance. One day last week she said the same thing "Oh, have you lost more weight? You must be doing something right". So I turned to her and said back, "Oh, it looks like you've gained a few kilos". Yes, it's a bitchy answer, but my appearance is nobody's business to comment on. Just like I would never say anything to Quasimodo about the lump on his back I don't expect acquaintances to comment on my obesity. Moral of the story is my weight loss is none of their business. I'm honest with people who I know when they ask how I've lost the weight, but as for the questions of whether I'll lose more and telling me not to? That's crossing the line IMO.

    Puking: Post-Op vs. Pre-Op

I drink a flat white every morning on my way to work and it goes down great. Mind you, it's 45 minutes after breakfast, so lots of time to let any food go down. I'm wondering if you barfed because you drank your mocha so soon after eating the apple and Pringles. I did that once and almost immediately felt the need to spew.

    September bypass buddies??

Today, only 10 weeks post op I have hit the 1/2 way mark to my goal. 20 kg down, 20 to go. I'm really hoping to have it gone by April 2019 as I'm going to meet my sister in Morocco and I'd like to be able to do everything we want to do. Bypass has been one of the best decisions I've made.

    September bypass buddies??

I have been going to the local gym (it's actually gym equipment in my local park put there by the council) to do the upper body machines and the eliptical machine every second day for 15-20 minutes. I find the cross trainer/eliptical thing much easier on my knees than walking or cycling. It's summer here, so I think it's about time to get back in the pool, too.
  25. Have you tried contacting your surgeon's office? They may be able to give you an anti nausea injection with Maxalon rather than tablets. If the office is closed could you try an urgent care facility? I'm not sure where you live, but you shouldn't have to put up with feeling so unwell. As for liquids, a tsp at a time. See if you are able to take just 1-2 tsp sips. With vomiting you run the risk of getting dehydrated. Hope you feel better soon.
