  1. Hmmmmm, I'm not a fitness coach, but do you think you are working out too much? If you are not able to eat many calories, and then these long walks and work outs, you will stall some. I am sure you already know muscle weighs more than fat, so there is that as well. You may be building muscle, so do not see a decrease in the scale.
Do your clothes fit more loosely? Maybe that could be a victory to keep positive and help up your mood.
    Best regards
    Di
clothes *do, fit more loosely... but not loosely enough, maybe? maybe I need to just drastically reduce my expectations.

real talk: I had the surgery because my diabetes was completely out of control and now my blood sugars are normal, I can drink wine (we're talking 300 calories here, people... I burn it off in less than one walk) and I don't feel sick for the first time in years. there's something about losing a boatload of weight that's so appealing though and I'm not sure this surgery has made that easier?

  2. Hi All,

It's been three weeks and two days. I thought the weight would be flying off post op, but it's not really. I entered the surgery at 292 and today, I'm 276 and have been here for about a week, sometimes going up a little but coming back down to 276.

I'm not doing great at tolerating food, which rolls me into slider territory with Quest bars and extra Protein Shakes.< /p>

I know I need to restock on eggwhites and maybe some fish so I have compliant, healthy, Protein packed foods at the ready. I'm working out and going on long walks with my dog consistently. feeling a bit disheartened by getting on the scale and seeing that number over and over.

I'm using myfitness pal... logging everything... I'm also in a bit of a piss poor mood. insatiable, deprived, eating rando protein and plateauing. open to hearing ideas.

  3. Folks. I know I come here and post every couple of days about my cravings, but I don't know what else to do. I feel like I'm going to buy a slice of pizza, take a bite and toss the rest when I'm out walking my dog.

I'm legit hungry all the time and there's no way I'm going to successfully resist temptation by just gritting my teeth. It's been constant. No relief from hunger at all. Today's day 12.

Also, when i eat cottage cheese or yogurt or some other tide me over fat free soft treat, my weight loss either stalls or goes up the next day. Called my nutritionist about it last Friday, she told me to drink one fewer Protein Shake a day so i show good numbers at my first weigh in.

    Frigging losing it.

  4. I think it's great that you're going on holiday! I've never been to Cuba but a number of my friends have gone and fell in love with it.

Like with anyone who has dietary restriction for any reason, be it Kosher eating, diabetic eating, vegan/vegetarian, celiac disease... you have to raise your voice and make sure you're accommodated. Give the tour group a call and see what they can arrange for you. The people organizing the trip as well as the lodging folks should be able to tell you what to expect as well as whether or not they can prepare special items for you. LET THEM TREAT YOU SPECIAL. You ARE special and you just did an amazing thing for yourself.

Even after you get some assurances that they'll be able to feed you, pack some powdered Protein for when you need to give yourself quick nutrients on your own terms.

I'm very new to bypass and have never taken an inclusive trip to Cuba, but I *do* know the hospitality industry very well. Treat this like an allergy that they need to work around. Make sure they're doing their part to make your trip safe and fantastic FOR YOU.

  5. Just so you know, one shot of espresso actually has less caffeine than a cup of coffee! It's just more concentrated - so if you had 8 oz of espresso it'd have more than 8 oz of coffee, but since you usually get a 1-2oz shot of espresso you're actually getting less caffeine. I believe one shot of espresso=20-40mg whereas a cup of coffee is around 100-140mg.

    Love the data!

I like coffee in the morning and espresso for afternoon/nighttime pick me ups. My job requires me to be pretty "on"- sometimes at 2 or 3 AM- so a midnight espresso gets me together without keeping me up all night.

  6. The reality is that you won't know how your specific body reacts to the surgery until you have it. I thought I'd never be able to eat anything fun again. Every meal before my pre op diet felt like a funeral for a dear friend. Nonsense. You'll totally be able to eat stuff again one day, and in moderation and with real enjoyment as opposed to binge habits.

But here's the reality. This procedure has been around for decades. It's hardly experimental anymore. Most people have little to no complications outside of the known side effects of the surgery. If you stick to the plan you're given, you're likely to skate by with flying colors.

Remember that most people who have easy or routine experiences with the surgery don't go online to start threads about "Everything's normal!" You are, by a huge margin, statistically likely to fall into the everything's normal group.

And if, god forbid, there are complications, you're in a country with the highest order of medical response. My money says you're going to do great.

Think positively and focus on eating and exercising according to plan to give your body and your surgeon the highest possible chance for success. YOU. CAN. DO IT!

  7. Hi! Love you crazy kids.

Anyhow. How serious is the no caffeine thing? Is one espresso really going to kill me? Had my surgery 10 days ago and I can tolerate literally hundreds of ounces of Water per day. I'd be happy to drink extra water to make up for any dehydration as a result of my caffeine intake. But seriously. I need some zing to do my job.

    Thoughts?

  8. Hi friend! Welcome and thank you for being so open with your fears and apprehensions.

The reality is that this is a not wholly uncommon procedure that has been around for decades. So long as you have a skilled surgeon with plenty of experience, you're almost certainly going to be fine.

In the same breath, this surgery doesn't come easy. You have to jump through hoops, see a range of medical specialists, have a bunch of exams and then, after all that, there's the preoperative diet, followed by Clear Liquids and then surgery.

Follow the plans. Do what they tell you. Lean on others for support and ask whatever questions you've got cooking. The potential returns in terms of quality of life are immeasurable. :)

  9. 8 to 5 your taste buds will change , you won't crave those things, since, they won't taste the same it,will take only 1 time and you'll,go Yuck, what. did I ever Like about Those Things? And you
might crave different, more healthy things, as an example although I am still pre-surgery when I ditched cakes and their sticky, little family members I developed a craving, for, veggies. Too early after my Breakfast, protein shake but I'd really like some fresh cooked green or yellow wax Beans about right, now. Failing that , some well- c9oked Brussels sprouts , I could pop them like I used to pop potato chips.[emoji493]
Haha, my tastebuds changed for a whopping 48 hours. Then everything became delicious again. Not even kidding, maybe even more delicious than before.

  10. to illcusoon: Protein Shakes and broth with the occasional break down cottage cheese is doing me alright. it's more like, when I called my nutritionist to be like wtf is wrong with me, I want to lose weight, she told me to go from 3 Protein Drinks a day to two. like, it's all sounding a tad pro-ana.

to missouri-lee: I GET IT. but really? I noticed that something was off in the hospital. I had THREE cups of broth my first night- I mean hours after being stitched up! 5 cups of ice chips. nothing even resembling discomfort. by the time the chinese food arrived (and my partner is more than welcome to eat what he wants) I was more experimental than anything else. it was like... what CAN'T I do?? I'd heard all these stories of baby sips and nausea and here I am, 9 days later, ready for spicy chicken and waffles. My new gut, like my old, is made of steel. I'm just following the rules to follow them. my physical intuition is crying out for many melted cheeses.

  11. I mean Jesus.

I had my surgery 9 days ago. Complete success. Surgeon literally described my insides as "beautiful."

I can drink in measures way bigger than sips. On day three of being home, my partner ordered chili fish, dan dan noodles, spicy peanuts and cumin fries from a GREAT chinese place in our neighborhood. I ate a bunch of it AND WAS FINE.

I accepted that I need to eat according to plan and I'm back on shakes, Bone Broth and cottage cheese... but I'm even limiting THAT because I want to lose weight. Cravings-wise, I could READILY eat a burger or some pizza or nachos or a sub or turkish food or more chinese or lox and bagel or french fries or JESUS EVERYTHING.

A couple things: I had the RNY because of my diabetes. Runs fatal among skinny people in my family on both sides and I had stopped responding to medication. The procedure FULLY worked and my blood glucose is in the normal range and I'm 100% medication free.

Still, I'd love to see some weight loss and enjoy being lean and lovely... but my cravings are THROUGH THE ROOF. Even with just cottage cheese, I could eat my bodyweight in cottage cheese. I'm back to abiding the diet and everything but it's just as hard as dieting ever was and I feel like I'm going to snap as soon as my partner leaves for work tomorrow.

    Help?

  12. Honestly, I think the pre-op diet is mostly there to switch us from one way of eating (excess, pizza, burgers, milkshakes, everything is permitted) to another (protein shakes, cottage cheese, sugar free greek yogurt, nothing else in the whole world.)

THEN, once we've had the surgery, the surgery more or less tells us when to back off of our augmented digestive systems and our newer habits feature a fridge full of Powerade zero and Premier Protein shakes.

It's like, first we replace the bullets with blanks, then we limit the cartridge capacity to a 1/4 of a bullet.

  13. Hi Everybody! Weird to have this be my first post given how many questions I had pre-op and how much reading other people's posts and comments helped me, but I just had my bypass surgery yesterday and I finally have .

Anyhow... I'm still in the hospital... and my belly is shaved and there are definitely 5 wounds on it... but I'm not having any nausea, any change in cravings or hunger... okay, maybe I have more energy and I feel less weird about not eating... but what's REALLY strange is that I've had no problem drinking 3 cups of broth and three cups of Water. None of the baby sipping I'd heard about-- and no irritation. My surgeon said he reduced my stomach to 40ccs... I was told I'd never casually drink water again... I heard all these stories about eating and drinking suuuuper slowly.

I just drank a bowl of vegetable broth in maybe 2 minutes. I'm confused. Shouldn't this make me feel sick??

Also, no one told me my first fart after surgery would feel that good.
