  1. For those who had the sleeve, how soon after the surgery were you able to be up and social. I know recovery is super important but I have my sons 3rd bday party just 3 days after my surgery. They said I should be fine and if possible take liquid Tylenol instead of my pain meds if I can handle it and that’ll help speed up recovery. I don’t have to really do anything for my sons bday just be there (the place does set up, entertainment, and cleanup!) and it’s only 1.5 hours. I just wanted to hear from people’s past experiences. Am I crazy for thinking/hoping I’ll be okay?

Ps - I know I can’t carry him or anything which is no problem. We have both sides of the family here for his bday and tons of friends to help.
I was home on day 2 and slept all that day and night. Day three I felt much better. I think it should be fine if you listen to your body. You may get tired. Sit when you do. Don't overdo it. If you don't have to do anything per se, might as well be sitting there vs. at home, right? Definitely keep up on the non narcotic pain relief...don't let it wear off. Good luck! I used only Tylenol days 3-7 and then nothing after that. But I definitely needed it day 3 and it kept the pain controlled, I had the narcotic RX too and didn't need it.

It's amazing how this process with WLS and a healthy diet (overall) can totally change you. You look like a whole different person...like your own younger brother, haha! You look SO great, seriously! Handsome and healthy. [emoji16]

  3. I was hoping to be down 35 to 40 pounds

I am at five weeks and down 15 is all. My surgeon said to hang tight...it's early days yet! He recommended I try and stay at or under 600 calories a day (I had been closer to 800, about half of which is from Protein powders). I have changed a few things and am getting around 600 calories, 25g net carbs or less, and I'm meeting my protein requirements of at least 80g and only having to do one Protein Shake a day. He said if I'm not losing 2-3 pounds a week in the next month or so, to call them and they will want to look at food logs. Everyone is different. I watched a lot of videos on YouTube of people freaking out over early stalls, and then I looked at their most recent videos. ALL of them still lost. Hang in there!

  4. My surgeon won't do a sleeve on me because my barium swallow showed reflux and moderate dismobility. He said it was likely the reflux would get worse. I am on strong meds for GERD and still have reflux. So it is bypass for me. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I guess surgeons are just different. My swallow study also showed reflux. But I didn't even know...I never felt it. Once in a while, sure...but not more than a couple times per year. I opted for the sleeve because the intestinal re-routing also scared me. The doctor thought the sleeve would be fine. I took Prilosec after surgery for the first three weeks, then stopped and have not had any issues in the couple of weeks since. I guess I'm lucky. Some people have a terrible time with reflux and VSG.

  5. Whose bright idea was it to schedule my surgery the Monday after Thanksgiving? I'm on day 4 of my liquid diet and I'm very sad and hungry. I have done very good except for today. I took a bite of mashed potatoes. I hope this doesn't hurt me. I'm struggling!
You will be ok. One bite will not be the end of the world. The key is to not let it turn into a binge day (I'm famous for...I already messed up, so why not more?)...remember you are doing this to improve your life. One Thanksgiving is a small sacrifice. This is for the Long haul! And depending on your program, it seems like you may be on pureed or soft textured foods by Christmas. Hang in there. We have all felt like you. I had my surgery a week before my birthday. I was still on clears when it rolled around. No japanese food, no cheesecake! In the scheme of things, it was ok even though I had a hard time that day.

  6. So ya. Thanksgiving.. man.. what a strange experience.. not going to lie.. I had some stuff today couple chips.. like 4-5 queso laden tortilla chips.. and 2 crackers with cheese pre dinner..

then.. for dinner even when I tried to take smaller portions of each item.. my plate was still full once I was done serving myself.. but..

to my surprise.. about a quarter way through the plate I started getting the uncomfortable feeling in my throat.. which tells me it's time to stop eating. so I did a few more bites.. gave the rest of one small piece of ham to the dog.. then that was that..

my stomach really does control my eating.. which.. not surprises me.. but makes me feel relieved.. because even when I tried to do small portions it was still a ton of food.. and my stomach wouldn't let me overdo it.. was a very strange in a good way experience.. I still did overeat today but nowhere near as much as I could have..

I had about the same experience and I am also relieved. I ate probably more than I should have, but it was only like 5-10% of what I normally would have...and I am loving it. I don't feel deprived. It's wonderful. I had what I wanted. Stayed away from breads and don't like stuffing...but had all the good low carb stuffs. Little teeny bits. 🥰

  7. I had my first scrambled egg today at two weeks out. One egg, with shredded cheddar. OMG, it tasted so, so, so good! It was like my sense of taste was heightened. I finished about 2/3 of it before my new tummy said, "No mas!" I really wanted to finish that egg, because the less egg and cheese I eat, the more Protein Shake I have to drink to meet my quota, but it was so exciting to see the surgery working (it's hard to tell with Protein Shakes because I hate them and would never take a sip too many).
I loved when this happened to me too! I still love eggs, and can eat 3/4 to one. It's awesome how after surgery and liquids you appreciate REAL food SO much. It's awesome.

  8. I'm planning carefully but will have all of what I like, split over about four sleeve-sized meals through the day. I will have turkey and ham, a tiny bit of mashed potato and gravy, a half of a brussel sprout, a half deviled egg, three little smokies and a tiny piece of pie. Only having pie or cake or something similar on Thanksgiving, Christmas, anniversary and birthday. 4x a year. Sticking to my plan! [emoji6]

  9. Thanks, do you eat every 2-3 hours? I feel I do better if I have 5-6 small meals a day too.
I do the same thing. 6-8 small meals a day, low carb, around 600 calories. Still no raw fruits or veggies so the carbs are pretty low. And a cup of liquid between each meal/snack. It's like I'm eating or drinking something every hour. I had also tried the three meals a day thing which is what my program wants but I got hungry (mostly just head hungry) and tended to overeat when I did eat. Splitting it all up really helps me. I go back to work next week and it's going to take a lot of planning and prep but I plan to stick with it this way. I'm following all the requirements of the program except the frequency of meals. I did a lot of research and all programs are so so different! We have to determine what works for us to be successful. I'm not at all saying disregard the requirements of your bariatric team...I'm saying tweak slightly as needed. [emoji8]

  10. I am 12 days post op... I dont feel full at all... is that normal? I almost feel like I never had sx...
Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm assuming at 12 days you're still in the full liquids stage? Or started pureed foods? I was the same way you are. Once I started eating more solid food that needed to be chewed a bunch, there was a huge difference. The liquid stuff just slid right through my sleeve. I was relieved when I started to feel full from eating again. Hope it works the same for you!

  11. Hello, all! I'm a 41 year old mother of two. My daughter is 20 and in her third year of college, and my son is 18 in his first year. I've been with my husband since I was 15 years old, and we have been married for 22 years. I'm a Paralegal for the state of West Virginia. I've been overweight all of my adult life. My highest was 320. Weight at surgery was 243. I'm super excited about this journey!

  12. I am down 50lbs since surgery 3 months ago. I am very proud of myself, but I have been here before... twice. I just hope this times it stays off [emoji24][emoji24][emoji24] I can never ever ever keep the weight off!

    My patterns:
    2010 I was 200lb
    2011 I was 145lb
    2012 I was 200lb
    2016 I was my lowest of 139lb
    2018 I was my heaviest of 245lb
Now 185lb ugh the struggle is so annoying!!!

If you stick to the plan for food and don't over stretch your new tummy, this time should be better. I've done the same yo-yo trip up and down in a 70lb range. I don't see how I could possibly gain it all back if I'm eating the right portions and having mostly low carbs. You can do it. And you look awesome [emoji6]

  13. I just had this done. I was given something to attach myself before I went to sleep. Just didn't get a good night sleep with it. My insurance would not pay for sleep center test.
Mine was the same and it was like 16-17 years ago. It was just like a normal CPAP machine in a briefcase sorta thing...and it measured the needed pressures and how often the apnea's and hypopneas happened. My insurance also would not do the sleep center test.

  14. I can definitely tell for you! You're looking great!

I really do think the counseling will help I'm going to call fo an appointment Monday default_wink.gif&key=afdaf0f9ce3bd962701506872380b0b55011f3a1c9a5d30b0638a350abe99adf I'll let you know.

  15. So I've lost 64lbs with WLS. I lost 20lb on my own so 84lbs all together. However, I dont see it!
Everyone else sees the transformation and I still see the 313lb me! I dont get it.
Yes, my clothes are big on me. Yes, my energy is better but the mirror says the same to me. Anyone else have this issue?
    Should I seek counseling?
I keep loosing weight, following the diet the best I can but feel very confused.
A lot of it for us who've been very overweight is mental. I have exactly the same issue. What helps me is taking photos and doing side by side comparisons using an app like picstitch or something. That really does help me to see what others see. The mirror lies. Lol

  16. Wow this reply totally relieved some anxiety! Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, I was worried I was already stretching my stomach out. I still have 6 more days of Clear Liquids before I can eat anything. My surgeon is so mean!
Lol. All of our programs are a little different but they all have their reasons I guess! Stick to it as best you can and know it gets easier. These first couple weeks are rough. They were for me!

  17. Hey folks, I figured I'd ask 2 burning questions I've had. I'm 8 days post op VSG.

    1. Has anyone else had to do a TWO week CLEAR liquid diet post op? My surgeon doesn't even allow Protein Shakes, just Clear Liquids and I feel like I'm just not getting enough calories. I am getting 40g of Protein with a Protein Water by Isopure but clear liquids for 14 days is driving me nuts.

    2. How much liquids can you drink? I honestly feel ZERO restriction when I drink liquids, and can easily get 8 to 10 ounces in comfortably in a few minutes. Is that normal and/or am I drinking too fast? I make sure to take small sips, I don't get gassy or "stuck" the way people describe. But I feel like I can ingest way more liquid than I'm supposed to.

    Thanks for any feedback
I had to do one week clears post op. Then one week full liquids. Clears were tough. Once I was a few days post op, I could drink a lot as well. The pyloric valve from your stomach into the intestine just kind of flips open for liquid, so that's not all just sitting on your pouch. I really felt like did they even DO anything in there?? Then the first time I ate something more solid, like that had to be chewed a lot, you can really tell the difference. I couldn't even eat one soft scrambled egg before I was stuffed. You'll see when you start eating more than clears, and when you get beyond Protein Shakes and Soups. You're totally normal. I wish someone had told me that! Lol. Good luck on your journey. We are all here with you!

  18. Went for pre surgery testing on November 6th and surgery is scheduled for November 21st and no one from hospital has yet to reach out to me to say what I will need to pay before surgery. I have 2 different insurances one deductible is 2,900 and one is $750. At the pre surgery testing they did have me sit down with registeration but she just verified my insurance and employment. I am just about a week out and nervous about a surprise from the hospital after reading other people’s post. Should I reach out to the hospital? I wouldn’t even know where to start. Anyone like to share their experiences
I had to wait til mine was scheduled to get the payment due amount from the hospital. I called billing for it. A couple of days later the program manager at my bariatric office called and gave me the info also. I didn't know they would be doing that. I knew that I'd have to come up with the copay, deductible and out of pocket max. But since you have double coverage it may be different. If your bariatric office has an office manager or program coordinator I'd start by calling them and asking how you get the info.

  19. Stage 3 starts tomorrow. It feels like my Birt-day. Even cottage cheese thoughts making me drool. Please share favorites here before I go to the store.THANKS ;-)
Not sure if your program allows beans...but vegetarian refried Beans (lower in fat) with red enchilada sauce and cheese melted in. My fave soft food stage meal! Also Soups were great...I tolerated split pea and broccoli cheese well.
