1. Hrsnjs I'm real mad at that surgeon, who is not only an a*****e but wrong. We all lose at different rates. We all have different metabolisms. Some of us have more active thyroids than others. If you lost a lot of weight pre-op, maybe that slowed your metabolism down a little bit, compared to someone who didn't, you know?
At my six week I was only down (checking my notes) 20, and I started at a higher weight than you and lost less weight pre-op. 30 pounds, given your starting weight, is a totally unreasonable goal -- not to say nobody ever manages it, but anyone who does should really count themselves lucky!
I wonder if he screwed up and assumed you'd had RNY instead of sleeve. They do lose a little faster at the outset.
I wondered the same thing! I asked him. He knew I'd had VSG. It was like he thinks all fat people lie about what they eat. I showed him my food logs in my phone. He simply said I'm not logging everything. I was floored. You guys being supportive makes me feel better about it. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if he weren't a respected and very experienced surgeon. I remind myself that all of our pre op and post op programs are different...I guess surgeons can differ in what they measure as success, as well.

2. He's a jerk. You know what they call the guy who graduates at the bottom of his class in med school? Doctor.
ALSO the same thing happened to me in Weight Watchers. I lost ONE lb. the first week because I had already lost about 70 lbs, and my weight loss had slowed. The leader said she was disappointed in me and I reported her to corporate.
some people, man.

3. Do you know how to find your weight loss percentage? My team expects 10-15% weight loss at 6 weeks.
The formula they give me is ((pounds lost)/(excess body weight))x100.
Excess body weigh is your IBW that insurance companies use. My doc provided me with mine but you can do a quick google search and calculate your own.
Thanks, this was a useful tool. Using this calculation it is 16/102x100=15.686. Did I do that right? My starting weight at surgery was 243. The IBW chart my doctor uses says 131 for me. Which means 102 pounds excess body weight. Seems like my 16 pounds is maybe ok...

4. I’m sorry he made you feel that way! I know it’s hard, but try not to let it get to you and keep up the great work! As long as your surgeon was happy with your results, I’d focus on that. Everyone’s body is different!
Thank you! That does help me. I know my surgeon is ok with my process. It's just one thing a fat person who's used to failing does NOT need, ya know? All of your guys support helps. So thank you.

5. Ok so o had my six week checkup today and saw the other surgeon in the practice (mine was out of the country for a family emergency). I was feeling good! He asked me a bunch of questions and then after all of the answers, he basically told me that I had to be lying because I should have lost 30 pounds by now and it's only been 16. I feel like a failure. I'm getting (shooting for) 600 calories a day... realistically I'm averaging around 700. This doctor told me that I had to be taking in 2000 calories a day to not be losing more than I am. I feel deflated and like I've failed. I tried to explain what I was doing and he said he wasn't there to negotiate my diet and that only I know the truth. I mean I lost 80+ pounds on my own before surgery using a low carb diet, I know HOW to do this. I did have a small sliver of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. But come on, that hasn't cut my weight loss in half. I will be glad to see my own surgeon again in six more weeks. I saw him last week and he was pretty happy with my loss up to then. Then I talk to this guy. Feeling very defeated.

6. We need to start a slow losers club.

Imma start upping my Water intake because @Matt_Z says we should.

And I'm also going to try being strict about three meals and no snacking.

I would say I'm going to start exercising but that's too big a hurdle for me yet (I hate anything that involves me getting changed into lycra)

Slow losers club here!! I'm at 16lbs and five weeks post op. It's still within the range of what's normal/expected for my starting weight of 243. It's hard not to compare to others, though. Has anyone lost pretty slowly but still reached goal?? I don't mind a slower pace...what I worry about is that losing little amounts will mean not losing much total, overall.

7. I was sleeved on 10/30/18, had some respiratory complications, aside from that, the surgery was a walk in the park.
I’m 4 weeks post-op today and lost 17 lbs since surgery and 27 lbs since pre-op diet.
I feel I need to exercise more frequently as I hit a 10-day stall now and don’t know what to do. I am having 700-800 calories a day and 70-80 grans of Protein, drink 64 oz of Water but my exercise routine is very unpredictable: there are weeks I work out most of the days and others I don’t...losing motivation and that can’t happen...how do you guys keep motivated and a positive mindset?
Almost everyone seems to stall somewhere in the 3-5 week range, and it lasts for some a couple weeks. This is regardless of what they do exercise wise, or food wise for that matter. I freaked when it happened to me and I had to research a lot to feel better. Stick with your program, keep up with the Protein and Water and exercise as you can...but know this is normal.

8. I know my one year update is a little late, but still wanted to chime in and say how great everyone is doing!
The last few pounds are so hard to lose, I still have 10 lbs to go to meet my goal weight, but I will get there. I really wanted to reach that goal by my wedding date, but I didn’t get there. It’s hard not to get discouraged or become unmotivated, but when I think about where I was a year ago, I’ve come a long way and I have to push through. I know I can do it. Positive mindset is key!
Here are progress pictures. Hopefully soon I can add when I meet my goal weight (fingers crossed)!

10. I have turned to this message board for a while and have gotten great info from a lot of you, so now I want to encourage others. VSG on 3-14-18, have lost 105 since. By far the best thing I could have done for me and my family.IMG_4382.thumb.JPG.f491acd3ff438617569cd749dbf7746f.JPG IMG_4700.thumb.JPG.f9166119ebb8e92400e30a3f54e11103.JPG

You look amazing! I can only hope to do as well. Great job!

11. That is awesome Congrats! Question since i am new though. Is that your waist or a combination of arms, waist, thighs? Curious for when i start doing that. I am only 2.5 weeks post op.
On Baritastic, you measure your waist, both thighs, both upper arms, hips, chest and neck. The lost inches is combined for all of those on the app. Not sure how others work. But A-ok with me! Nice to see 22 inches lost when I'm five weeks post op today and have only lost 16 pounds.

12. Tomorrow is the day for me. I am super excited but really nervous. I'm afraid I'm going to forget to bring something, or forget to take my last med, or to drink the carb load, and somehow they are going to find a way to tell me that I can't have the surgery tomorrow. I couldn't do this liquid pre-op diet again!
Congrats. You will do great

13. For those who use unflavored Protein Powder what do you like it mixed into? I'm not getting in enough Protein so my nutritionist suggested I use Unjury unflavored Protein powder and put it in anything I can tolerate. I've tried it in Soups and in my cereal/milk, but I absolutely don't the texture or taste (even though it's "unflavored" ). Any ideas?

I'm at five weeks out. I was mixing it in my Water. Like you, I don't like the taste or texture. So for the ones that have the unflavored Protein Powder in them, I use a little crystal lite packet...or a half depending on the flavor. I also add my benefiber. Before I was getting more protein from food, I was adding a half scoop of the unflavored protein powder to every 16oz shaker bottle I drank...which was getting me 30g in addition to my food and my one Protein Shake. Was putting me at or above 80g per day.

14. I was feeling a little hungry with the 4-5 meals a day plan my doc recommended so I started eating more frequently, every 2-3 hours and is always lean Protein first, I usually have a Protein Shake for Breakfast, 1/4-1/2 cup of 1% cottage cheese for snack, ricota/zucchini bake for lunch, protein Jello (While making sugar free jello I mixed in protein powder) and protein Soup or protein mashed potatoes for dinner. I average 80g of protein and 700 calories a day. I also drink 64oz of Water a day just keep my water bottle next to me and sip all day. My nutritionist said that 700 calories is fine and protein also fine, she's not concerned I'm getting over 60g because it's lean protein and I exercise. I found that meal prepping is key, I plan and prep on Sunday and have the whole week's meals prepped and divided on separate containers so I just need to heat it up and am good to go. That keeps me on track.
I am doing the same exact thing as you, and hitting between 600-700 calories. I go back to work next week...today is my first meal prepping session.

15. What I am really enjoying, even beyond the obvious weight loss inspiration, is seeing that none of you appear bald! It is calming my anxiety about just how much Hair loss I can expect. Thinner I can handle, needing a full wig I can't.

I'm terrified. Being militant about my Protein and Vitamins. I have super fine, thin hair to begin with. I can't afford to lose much of ANY without needing a wig! Seriously...my ponytail is like the diameter of between a dime and a nickel size. I just have to remember even if I lose a ton, this will have been worth it!

16. I have a question for sleevers who are at least a year post-op.
I'm at about two months post-op, allowed to (and able to) eat pretty much anything. (I haven't risked rice or Pasta, and I won't until ... what? 6 months? That's a question to ask at my 3-month follow up, I guess. And, I mean, there are definitely other things I haven't tried! But I have enough range, now, that I don't feel limited at all.)
I need some Fiber in my life, but every ounce of Protein I replace with something fibrous is yet more Protein Shake I'm stuck drinking; even swapping in Beans means decreasing my Protein count from what it could be, for that meal. Honestly, I have to have a shake most days. And I guess adding in 1-2 prunes per day, between the three meals I'm allowed, is probably not a huge deal, calorie-wise, but I still feel weird about it? (The alternative is pretty painful and bad, though. I'm honestly having a lot of trouble finding the right balance for my lower digestive tract, and "1-2 prunes, combined with a Fiber supplement," is mostly just a best guess, right now. That balance will shift over time, too, I'm sure.)
Anyway, I'm curious about when people move out of the initial stages of all this. For instance, at what point were you able to stop with the Protein Shakes? And at what point did you start to kind of hit your stride, with long-term eating habits?
Because I know this protein-only lifestyle comes to an end; at some point, getting to 60+ grams gets easy, and you need to shift focus toward choosing nutrient-rich foods to supplement your serving of protein at each meal. And I'm really interested in when that is. Like... I'm not trying to rush the process, but I also don't feel like I'm building those lifetime eating habits, yet. "Don't entertain yourself with food," sure, and "get enough fluids," yeah. "Take your Vitamins," yeah. (All still works in progress, to be honest.) But I'm still pretty interested in finding out when it'll be time to start building the habit of eating fruit- and vegetable-based meals with healthy Proteins.
Great question, and I'd like to know the same thing. For the fiber, though...I'm using benefiber added to all of my liquid and it seems to be helping. The doctor is also having me take a dose of Miralax each day for now. If I didn't use the benefiber, I'd get almost none. I'm eating 6 times a day right now, and getting about 50g of protein from food. I have one Protein Shake a day, which is great with me! I figure once I can have larger portions, at six months, and I'm eating more veggies, maybe I won't have to have any of the shakes anymore.

17. Hi everyone my Fellow Fall Sleevers!!

I’ve been MIA on here pretty much focusing on tracking my eating, Vitamins and exercise(mentally purging the social media stuff) I had Surgery on the 24th of October and feeling great.
Is anyone submitting progress photos?

I added one.. my weightloss has been coming off slow but stead (I haven’t had a stall longer than a week) Today I’m at 227lbs

My goal is to hit 220 by Dec 20th and 200lbs by Dec 31st..

The holidays is the hardest of times to have this major surgery so I applaud anyone that has made it through this during the holidays! It sure is a mental battle and can be overly exhausting!!

Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving and keep up the hard work!

Also..don’t mind my appearance I’m still under construction :)

I don't know that anyone can see much difference, but I can see a little. These are four weeks apart. The day of surgery before. Four weeks post op after. I have not put any full body shots together yet to compare. GirlShrinking, you look great!! Keep it up.IMG_20181116_175447_820.jpeg

18. Hi, I just found and joined this forum and so glad I did. My surgery will be on Dec. 3 and I admit I’m nervous. But this topic added to it, unfortunately. I guess I’m concerned that I will never be able to eat again! If a little turkey and a couple bites of other things is being “bad”, then does that mean we must forever live on Protein Shakes and a few bites of cottage cheese? Can someone please put my mind at ease that eventually I will be able to eat actual small meals again with family and friends?
Of course! You definitely can. I'm five weeks out and I had some Thanksgiving favorites. It's the pre op diet and the first 3-4 weeks after, depending on your program, that are so strict and hard to stick to. I ate what everyone else ate, just in tiny amounts totaling 1/4 - 1/2 of a cup.

19. Surgery was 10/24. I feel uncomfortable 98% of the time I eat. Don’t know if it’s because it’s too much, too fast or not chewing enough. I burp a ton and feel major discomfort. I have only lost 14 lbs since surgery. Had a cheat day thanksgiving and a day after. Back at it now and was eating perfectly all other days. Feeling worried I’m doing this wrong.
I'm still feeling sorta like you. I have had to cut out the few carbs I was having. When I started eating more Protein in place of the carbs there was less need for Protein Shakes to meet my 80g. Hopefully now the scale will move. I got rid of the stuff I was having that I shouldn't have. I had surgery 10/22 and have also lost 14lbs. Hang in there...it will move for us.
