    Preop weight gain

I would be shocked if a weight gain of 2lb caused and issue with proceeding with surgery. I mean, I have some winter boots that weigh much more than that! I'm not sure about your surgeon's policies by at my office, generally, the insurance company would only decline to cover if you had a large weight loss with lifestyle changes and they determined it was no longer medically necessary. However, the policy for my surgeon, was that you needed to have a small weight loss, and no large gains in the 6 mo leading up to surgery to ensure you were willing to participate in making the changes to help surgery be successful. 2lbs would not have been a factor for either of those situations. Not sure about the cutoff weights, but one man in my group lost 70 lbs prior to surgery and his insurance still covered it. Another woman gained 20 lbs during the pre-op program but then lost 5 in the month before surgery - she still got to move forward as well. You can do this! And I don't think you need to take any extreme actions over the 2 lbs. Just work your plan consistently and you'll do well. Good practice for post op, too! We're all rooting for you!
  2. Congrats on your surgery! This is pretty much exactly how I felt when I first started on foods and I didn't get off of purees until 4 weeks after surgery. It just felt like the food went down my esophagus then stopped instead of going down into my stomach pouch. Sometimes I couldn't even sit - I had to stand. When it was bad, I even had to take off my bra. Forget even thinking about lying down. I think that tightness is from the swelling which takes a long while to calm down and heal. I figured out pretty quickly what did not agree with me and then I just avoided those things. I had a tricky couple of weeks where so many foods had made me ill that I didn't want anything to do with them, but the foods that agreed with me I was so tired of they made me nauseous. Like mouth-watering, gagging nausea. But, thanks to the folks here, I just kept going. Skip the turkey chili - just leave it behind for now and try it again in a week. Move to the next food you want to try and you will find something that will work. Try tiny bites with a baby spoon spaced out by 5 min (set a timer!) Takes forever but you'll likely feel so much better. Don't worry too much - you are going to be feeling so much better in no time! You can do it!

That sounds like a slider food situation to me. I can easily eat cheese especially if it's melted and the only bread product that doesn't give me trouble is toast. I'm 5 mo out from my bypass and was pretty naughty over the holidays. I was surprised at how much food I could eat at once. But only junk food. Once I got myself back on track and started managing my mealtimes and snacks better, the restriction is definitely still there. Don't beat yourself up over your food choices - we have all been there! Get that protein in - it's definitely helping me. Good luck on your journey!

    ❤ JANUARY 2019 CHALLENGE ❤

I've been on a roll with my fitness plan for about 2 months- so happy i found something that works for me. Sun, Mon, Wed, Thurs: elliptical warmup then weight training- the music is key! Tuesday is "me day"! I try to do something active that's fun or new. So far I've tried swimming, yoga, and bootcamp. I want to try martial arts, pilates, barre and kickboxing. But sometimes I just go to the gym to sink into the hot tub and hang in the sauna to pamper my hard-working muscles. I am not perfect about following this plan. I'm getting better about rolling with it if something comes up and I try not to let it derail me for the week. Anyone else have control issues? Weekends are for hiking with the fam or adventuring around town.

    Rant about a friend

I'm really frustrated with my best friend and I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about it so I came here to rant into the abyss. She said some hurtful things that I'm having a hard time letting go of. Every time we speak she comments about needing to get on track with her diet so that I don't pass her up. It sucks! I didn't realize that my role in our friendship was being the fat one and I guess it's important to her that it stay that way. She is also overweight but has never been morbidly obese. My current weight is probably about where her highest weight has been but she is less right now. Every time we speak she asks me how I'm doing with my weight loss and asks a lot of detailed questions most of which I'm happy to answer as we've been friends for 10 years. Then 2 weeks ago, she sent me a text saying that she doesn't want to talk to me right now because watching me lose weight and looking better is upsetting to her. She said it is triggering her eating disorder of which I was unaware. I responded compassionately even though I was upset and told her it was ok for her to be honest with me about her feelings. I expected to give her some time and space and see how things go but she texts me almost every day with something sad and horrible about missing her mom or depression or anxiety or her wife or her son's behavior problems and it feels like she's leaning really heavily on me. This might just be a season in our friendship were she needs more support than I do right now. But it's hard for me to hang in there when she says unsupportive things to me and then expects me to just keep responding to 2am texts. Luckily for both of us she lives in another state so she never has to see the look on my face when she makes those comments. I only told 5 people about my surgery: my mom, my 2 sisters, my husband and my best friend. She lives in another state and we probably only talk about once a month these days. I was counting on her as part of my support system. She is going through a lot, like all of us. She suffers from depression, struggles with money, has some family issues and lost her mom a year ago. I love her and I worry about her. It makes me sad that I feel like our friendship is not healthy for me.

    Food Before and After Photos

Burger bowl: lean ground beef with cheddar, carmelized onions, bacon, pickles, mustard, tomato, onion, fresh jalapenos, lettuce with homemade sugar free thousand island. Delicious!!! For size reference, the meat mixture measures at 2oz on its own. I find I'm really more interested in veggies these days and my protein consumption is taking a hit 😕 Also had to spit my last bite in the trash as I didn't realize I was full until it was already in my mouth. So glamorous!

    Rant about a friend

Thanks for your thoughts guys. To update, I spoke with her today and was gently honest with her about my feelings. I said I understood if she couldn't be part of my support system in this but that I really needed her to not be overtly negative about my body or my choices. She responded by saying that I was being frivolous with my money considering that I'd probably need a bunch of plastic surgery to fix all the "hanging skin" I'm going to end up with. She must've been holding on to that one for a while. I'm making the healthy choice not to contact her. Turns out that for my own self preservation I can't support her through whatever she's going through mentally right now. I hope things change for her down the road and I'm leaving the door open for our friendship to heal if it can. I didn't say this so thanks for letting me say it here: But do you know what just pisses me OFF?!?! Frivolous with money?? Guess who decides that? Me and the person I'm married to FFS. Also, for her information my husband, who has lost 75lbs and looks sexy AF, is pretty on board with my decision to get new boobs down the road! And she is the epitome of a money waster. Spent the inheritance from her mother (25K!) to get necessary training and certification for a new career/starting her own business. And guess who's not working right now because she's decided, 9mo later, that it's not really her "thing" Now THAT is frivolous. I saved my own life with my money thanks very much, *insert immature name-calling here*

Tips and things you wish you would've known

I second the spreadsheet! These were my 2 best purchases: This pillow doesn't escape out from under you like a stack of regular pillows. I had a HARD time getting in and out of bed due to the discomfort (also had hernia). This incline was a life saver. Also great turned on its side to sit up in bed. That really helped me when I needed to rest a bit but was too nauseated to lie down. Plus, my daughter slept on it for a few nights when she had a cold last month. Really helped her coughing! https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009HHLBKK?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title I still use this pill organizer daily, 5 mo out. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001TEWKMM?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title

They were huge fans of my NSV last night. Hubby still gives them piggyback rides to bed even though our 10yo is 5'3". I got to take a piggyback ride down the hall too this time! We are BUSY! ❤️❤️❤️

    Morning Nausea

I've always been a breakfast eater and that stopped cold turkey since surgery (aug). I'm not nauseous in the mornings anymore but breakfast just sounds terrible. And when I force myself to eat it, I don't feel well. I do drink a protein coffee with Fairlife milk, coffee, genepro and SF toriani in the mornings. Eat my first real meal after the gym, 9 or 10am. My nutritionist does not love that plan but says I can go with it for now if I make sure to eat a small snack after dinner. They're not kidding when they say EVERYTHING changes. Good luck on your recovery and congrats on you surgery. Feels great to take excellent care of yourself!

Things To Do During Recovery Period

I'm a planner so one thing I did was scour this site for recipes and ideas for the different food stages. Then I made up some menus for when I could start each stage. I get bored quickly with repetitive food choices so I wanted allll the ideas! Turns out this was critical for my sucess because I dealt with a lot of nausea and food aversions in weeks 3-6. It helped to just pivot to the next thing on the list rather than trying to repeat a "meal" that made me nauseous. I also got my Instacart account set up for grocery delivery (lifting restrictions and stairs plus my hernia surgery) I still had tons of opportunity for TV watching, relaxing, and walking. However, don't underestimate how much your world will be consumed with sipping liquids. I set a 15 min timer and did a shot (1oz) water or protein drink whenever it beeped. I tell ya, it got my fluids in but I barely had time to pick my nose with that damn alarm going off!!! I could hear that beep in my dreams. Still can't use that particular ringer for anything to this day! 🤣😂🤣

    Compression clothing?

Yes, it really helps with the bottom belly support. I do wear compression leggings under my sweatpants. But then I pull this shirt down over the top of my pants and it keeps everything pulled together. I like it more than I thought I would. Downside is that it's going to be too loose to be effective compression in about 15 lbs from now. Up side is that it's only $13 and I'll still be able to wear it as a gym shirt or as long underwear in the winter.

Who is sick of purees? Some fresh ideas...

I do not. I buy refried beans from a local mexican fast food drive thru taqueria. The canned ones were too thick and pasty for me. I tried to thin them out but it's just not the same as homemade, and I don't know how to make homemade beans taste amazing. I would buy one $3 container and it would last 4 meals. Luckily, I'm 5 mo post-op so I've moved on to regular foods but I still eat these beans

That Everything but the Bagel seasoning is the best! I still have a hard time with anything bread related, keto or otherwise 5 mo out. I get my everything bagel fix by sprinkling this seasoning on cottage cheese. Sounds crazy. Tastes like everything bagel with cream cheese, yum!!!

    Compression shirts

Hey, I just posted about this in another place. This $13 one from Amazon is long enough and doesn't roll up. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B076JBN9VH?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title I got an XL. It fits my arms great, little snug through chest/waist/hips. I'm 5'5", 235lb in pic

    Boiled egg

I love miso soft boiled eggs in ramen. Hard boiled eggs do not agree with me since surgery so I finally tried making them myself. It's one of the easiest "recipes" ever! I just soft boil the eggs, peel right away, wrap them in red miso paste and marinate for 6 hours or overnight. I eat them slightly warm. Or you can see different instructions here: https://www.chopstickchronicles.com/miso-egg/

    Compression clothing?

Hey, I just purchased my first compression shirt from amazon (link below) I've been wearing capri length compression leggings for a while. I found that after hard workouts, my arms were always more sore than my legs. Someone suggested compression for the muscle soreness. It works for me! I'm also self conscious about my arms so long sleeves are nice. Pic below of the shirt on Amazon, $13. Pic of me wearing it for reference. Shirt size XL. I'm 5'5", 235lbs. I do wear a looser shirt over the top. Sizing is great. It's pretty tight across my chest & tummy but the sleeves fit perfectly. If I went up a size the sleeves wouldn't be supportive at all. I'd buy it again and I have a couple others on my wish list to try as well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B076JBN9VH?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title
