I think it will take practice. I find that I catch myself at the third swallow. So I pause to see how I'm doing. For me, there's a lot of retraining to do in that vein. Remembering to be mindful and chew slowly and thoroughly is next I imagine. But then again, I think that slowing down will help so I can still "enjoy" food with the few bites I'm imagining being able to tolerate.

I’m 10 days post op today and I still randomly get the chest pains... sometimes I’ll take a gas x and that helps, but it does get better! One of the worst parts for me was the chest pains. Each day it gets a little better.... after exactly one week and day, I woke up feeling “normal” again!
Still dealing with that darn head hunger and desire to chew. I have 3 kids, so I’m often making them and my husband dinner and it’s hard!!! I don’t feel hungry, but I’m missing food! One more week till purées... never would’ve thought i would be excited about that! 😂

I am currently laying in a bed in Mexico awaiting surgery tomorrow. Pre-op diet hasn’t been all that fun, but I’m down 58 pounds in six weeks. Looking forward to the future of not being hungry all the time.

I am post-op day 5 from VSG and still can’t get anywhere close to 64 oz. It takes me about 50 mins to drink 4 ounces. Not sure how in the world I will be able to advance to full liquids in 2days.

Today is my first day back home following my surgery on December 12th. So far so good but I have a lot of stomach gurgling and still plenty of gas. Also I think my meds are breaking my face 😒

Does the chewable Multivitamins count Few days more and you’ll be chewing again. I can honestly say I never want to see broth again....
That pre-op diet was hell, mainly due to the sugar and carb withdrawal feel so much better now. I’m just getting to chew again so I’m enjoying every second of it. My programs slightly diff from most I do the two week pre-op liquids then two weeks post op liquids then we go straight into soft food no need for purée then after four weeks back to normal diet as tolerated. I’m just over two weeks post op and trying my best to enjoy every minute of chewing

Me too! With some American cheese in that bad boy with a bit of NSA ketchup? Mmmmm.
I would argue that the weeks leading up to the surgery (pre-op diet) and the weeks receding (post-op clear liquids) are the most difficult ones to deal with. It is most definitely a head game. I've been craving refried Beans like no one's business.

Everyone has felt they get a say in what I do with and to my body friends coworkers family members especially all the family at my son’s bday party etc. did I tell them all? nope my mom felt the need to call all of our family and let them know. Even though I’m happy I had the surgery, I’m only 4 days out I’m glad I had it but extremely hard without any cheerleaders in my corner. 😢 even though my family has told me how stupid this was and what a waste of money it is I’m greateful they kept my 2 yr for a couple days after surgery so I could heal.

Wow! 4 days since surgery and I’ve lost 12.2 lbs I know eventually it will slow down but it feels stepping onto the scale and watching the numbers drop. Really helps fight through the pain.

Starry*Night please be easy on yourself, don't dwell on regrets. You're starting purees, that is SO GOOD, you could be in my moccasins, 19 weeks solid of liquids, few very runny purees, Protein Shakes. Tuesday I made a mini- branch out to mashed potatoes gravy and 3 well-chewed shreds of Turkey meat. Doesn't sound too thrilling ? Honey it was the first MEAT I was able to keep down since before my RnY September 5th, I literally wanted to cry. You see I have a stomal stricture and jejunem ulcers that aren't healing well, I spent a Week in Ohio State University November28- December 5th, had a PICC line put in November 29th, I am on TPN feedings 14 hours a night, I couldn't get enough Protein in orally to help my ulcers heal, this way I do have a fighting chance at healing.
Do I regret my surgery? Nope my life was pretty abysmal before it. Obese, in constant arhrotis pain from dragging my heaviness around, my peers dying and I wasn't sure I wouldn't be next!
Mad at my facility? Nope they took a chance on me and my surgery, many 72 year old women get turned down, many facilities have a cut-off at 60 or 70.
Oh I am more than a little peeved that my body is malfunctioning, not healing as fast as some, the knowledge that I will end up with baggy saggy skin, it was stretched too many years to BOUNCE back. But I am Still alive, kicking a little complaining but I am not as short,of breath as I once was. I came into this world, red-faced,red hair and shaking my fists, probably go out the same way. But nobody better ever consider counting Me Out, I still have a lot to offer this sad old world, maybe I will stick around and straighten things out.
Oh this challenge is not easy, and there is discomfort, my PICC LINE feels at times like someone stapled me with an industrial stapeler, but it will be a tool to help me get better, 14 hours wearing a bag of feeding solution , which is 8 pounds of dead weight, that's why it is in a black backpack, oh I do feel wearied but not 😟 worried. And I'm here if you ever want to vent more, and I am here for the long haul because I believe in tomorrows,i believe in the future and I believe in my surgeons, if I am broken now, they have the tools to repair and restore me! And I shall be victorious yet!

I never thought I'd feel this way, but here I am.
I'm 17 days post op; I start pureed foods tomorrow. I'm still struggling with getting my liquids down for the day. My weight loss stalled 3 days post op, and still hasn't moved.
I'm starting to regret my decision to have this surgery. I know I shouldn't - I know I'll be happy down the road - but this stall scares me, and I'm so tired of not being able to hydrate properly and not having energy to do anything. I'm working as hard as I can to get my 64 oz down every day, but right now Protein and Water is all that's on my mind all day and it feels like food is ruling my life even though I'm hardly having any of it. I average from 150 (!) to 500 cals a day, with most days falling around 250-300. I'm always struggling with nausea. I feel great until I try to drink. Protein hot chocolate and Jello seem to be all I'm able to get down easily, with the occasional protein Soup. Water sucks (and I loved water before surgery), even with flavoring.
I figure my calories will go up once I'm eating actual food, but how have you guys dealt with regret? Is there a trick to getting liquids down easier? Sip sip sipping makes me nauseous. If I saw the scale moving it'd help at least because I'd know this is working, but without it I'm scared.

My doc might work slightly differently, but he doesn’t prescribe anything. He sort of says that multivitamins are fine to take, but he prefers to do blood panels every 6 months and see if there’s a deficiency that way and treat it when there’s proof.
I know the overwhelming majority of people here are put on a pretty strict Vitamin regimen, and I did question him about it, but he’s been at the top of his field for a long time and his explanation of his approach made sense (he’s also one of the docs that doesn’t make you go liquid pre-op until 24 hours, and also doesn’t have any draconian post-op longterm diet rules). I do take multivitamins occasionally and have some calcium chews I snag when I remember, but that’s mostly because of everything I read here from others with more prescriptive regimens.
Bottom line: do what your doc says, but also make them explain their rationale so you can decide if you agree with it

Hi there- I have had a tough time with the Vitamins, but taking them with a few adjustments from my doctor because of issues I am having. but I will say this, you may need to find the right combo are you still taking chewable? if so can you talk to you dr about a different one you can take? my doctor told me that the first three months it is so important to take the vitamins, and Ideally that we should continue taking them, realistically she mentioned she has a lot of sleeve patients who stop taking them. good luck and talk to you dr and nut!

And in that vein, many complain about family members especially adult children not understanding why Mom thinks she needs to do This. I had a son who died 11 years next month at the age of 31. I wish every day my Kevin could have seen me make a success of Bariatric Surgery because he would have been So Proud. And he would have been a Great Supporter, his little brother the Tomkitten is great support, but I often wonder why I couldn't have both my boys in my corner at this point in life. And the doctor who allowed his death, because he was not medically compentant. to intervene is still practicing medicine with great impunity. And I do rage at the unfairness of it all!😭😪😥😧

kjuno reacted to Wanda247 in Anyone NOT taking their vitamins?
You really should take your Vitamins, since you are not getting enough from just your food intake because we can only each such small amounts. You need Calcium for your bones, teeth etc and Multi-Vitamin for whatever you are lacking in your food intake and B12 for energy and perhaps some others reasons...I do not think you will find anyone on this forum that will tell you that it's ok not to take them.
Although almost all of us here are on plans that vary based on each program and surgeon BUT one thing that we can all agree on is that we are ALL required/advised to take vitamins and it's for our best interest.
So put cha big girl panties on and just do it...It will be very beneficial in the long run. You got this love. 👍

I hate taking Vitamins, and I must admit, sometimes I do, but often I don't. I hate them. I justify it because I had the sleeve and it is not a surgery that creates mal-absorption (sp?). Am I crazy? I am only 2 months (tomorrow) post op, and wondering how bad my checkups will be. Is there anyone out there who also did not take their vitamins after getting sleeved, and have no issues with Vitamin levels? Anyone who DID have issues?
