I have struggled with my weight since I was five years old. Late in 2016- at 28 years old at my heaviest weight- I had my first appointment with a bariatric surgeon in Akron, Ohio where I live and began the steps towards gastric bypass. I was so scared. But I knew that I would rather risk my life than live like this forever. I feared that my parents would bury me in 20 years and that my sister would become an only child. I knew I had to do something. I had tried everything. Between the ages of 8-28 I had tried everything under the sun. I could not lose/maintain the weight loss.

On June 26, 2017- I had gastric bypass surgery. I have lost/maintained 180 pound weight loss. I have a whole new life. It is quite beautiful. I look forward to living everyday. I share my journey on Instagram - (my name on there is Maddie5088) and I also have a public Facebook Page called Mornings with Maddie. I created a blog almost a year ago that focuses on sharing my journey, creating/sharing healthy recipes. You can find it here - foodfitnessandbeauty.com

I share body positivity, kindness, self love, inclusivity, healthy recipes, grocery hauls, I do monthly giveaways, how to meal prep, affordable/easy meals for bariatric patients and I do Q and As for Bariatric patients.

I have felt very called to share my journey with the bariatric community! I hope you come follow along my story! It’s been a heck of a ride!

    Xoxo

It has been one week ago Monday (3/2) I started my journey of no return. During the first five days, I became afraid, I thought I had made a mistake. I was in pain, from one of my incisions, suffering with head hunger, and not feeling comfortable after taking my liquids; mildly lethargic, nauseated, and suffering with the worst constipation. I felt there was nowhere for me to go mentally.

The thought came to mind to use common sense. Since Protein and pain meds can cause Constipation, I chose to reduce my Protein intake for one day, increase my stool softener, and increase my fluids. I also walked more, and did some reading on this site. The hospital, where my surgery was performed, provided the link to this site as a resource. The experiences of so many have truly assisted me to become unafraid, and forward moving. Thank you😘

Woke up with a sore throat and a little congestion. All the over the counter medicines seem to be NSAIDs. Can anyone recommend a brand or type to help with sore throat and cold symptoms?

My surgeon’s office suggested Simply Saline nasal spray. Never tried it, but will see if that makes any difference.

As always, thanks for any advice!

Tylenol brand has a lot of cold medicines that you will be able to take.

Hi there, I'm new to this....my Surgery is next Friday -- I am nervous for the pain during the recovery. How much pain are people in in the days following the surgery? I am planning on bringing my laptop and working from the hotel here and there the following week, 3 days after the surgery -- will that even be possible? Any insights on how days 1, 2, 3, and 4 were would be greatly appreciated.

I am beyond excited for the new chapter afterwards, but am just trying to anticipate what to expect. Thanks for any experiences.

The only pain that I had was a slight stinging from the wound from which they removed my stomach any other pain I did not have any, not even gas pains. The only pain that I had was a slight stinging from the wound from which they removed my stomach any other pain I did not have any, not even gas pains.

This is gonna sound like bragging, and I guess it is....but for the first time in my life my waist size and inseam size in pants is the same number: 32

At my biggest I was a 60" waist, so this is REALLY a huge milestone for me. My surgery was November 2016.

Started at 485. Current weight 200.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!

So as some of you may know I’m fairly fresh on the post op side. (Sleeved 12/11). I wanted to feel normal and prepare food for my hubby. So I made pork steak, Mac and cheese, and cabbage. His favorite. My recipes are pretty set in stone with some things, but veggies I always taste to make sure they’re seasoned. I did it. I tasted the cabbages without even THINKING! Then I got upset with myself. 😡 My dear old man doesn’t even know what the hell happened, just that my mood changed. *sigh*

Don't panic, as long as it didn't upset your tiny tummy it should be okay. Just be careful right now and stick to your doctor's diet plan for now.

    1. It sounds like you are doing GREAT!! 2. Don't go by anyone else. Everybody is different and lose at different rates. So go by how you feel and what your surgeon says.

    Hi All,

Happy Thanksgiving. This is my first since VSG on 11/11. Curious what everyone ate today?

Since I’m still on liquids, my Thanksgiving meal was a custom creamy Tomato Soup I made using Rao’s Tomato sauce, Ricotta cheese, Half &Half and Parmigiana cheese. Combined all through my Nutribullet and then cooked in a saucepan. Satisfying and filling. Topped of the rest of the day with some Protein Shakes and I was all good.

The most surprising part of this journey is that I neither felt deprived, nor craved the “traditional” Thanksgiving meal I had become accustomed to since I was a kid (49 now).

Very thankful for this site and all of you who helped me through the doubt and confusion in the weeks leading up to my surgery.

Definitely the best decision I have ever made!

I’m currently down 19lbs since my surgery and I feel great.

Looking forward to seeing your Thanksgiving meals too!

I had a very small portion of ham, mashed potatoes, and some corn and potato casserole.
