How do people gain weight after Sleeve?

My friend was sleeved 8 years ago. When I met her she was tiny (18 BMI). Over the last few years she’s begun gaining. She looks lovely. Better than at 18 BMI, for sure but getting to a point that worries her. I’m sure she’s not overweight but certainly larger than when I met her after her 100lb weight loss. We recently talked about it. For her it comes down to having more room and not making good choices to fill it. Not being vigilant...getting lazy. WLS isn’t a cure, it’s a bandage..we still have to pay close attention to healing the body and focus a lifetime of effort on the chronic disease...even when we no longer show the outward symptoms.

I tried a diet coke today...

“Hey, look at me. I did exactly what I was told not to do and it was fine. Free pass!” That post is fine with you guys. I have a different opinion and felt like commenting. I assume that when people post stuff they know that not every human reading it thinks exactly the same as they do and that they are grown up and prepared for that. So much drama on these forums.

    I shaved my head...

It looks wonderful. I did it twice when I was younger. It’s so liberating! Good for you!

I tried a diet coke today...

So, yay! You have found how easy it can be to slip into bad habits just one pound shy of your goal.
  6. i wonder if it could be a little pocket of gas or some constipation from pain and other meds. The pill thing is pretty normal. I took my essentials and waited a full week before adding in supplements. Glad to hear you are doing well. If that pain doesn’t fade with hydration and walking, pls call your surgeon. That’s why they make the big money!

To purchase or not to purchase?

Oh my gosh, I have pounds of whey protein and so many bottles of whey protein water and shots that my stomach won’t tolerate just languishing in my pantry. If the world goes to a whey based economy, I’m freaking RICH!

    Sleeved 9/5/18 Still in hospital

You are a champ for getting on here and sharing (and thinking of your surgery buddies). Such a big help to the folks that might be going through this in the next few days!

Eating out ok no pureed diet

I was called out of town a week or so into purèe phase. I just began eating real food. I selected lean meats or soups when I couldn’t have shakes or protein bars. I chewed everything to purèe before swallowing and took the tiniest bites. Did not have a single problem with anything. I tried scrambled eggs at home (nothing in them) first...winner! It was a breeze!

    Before and After

Terrific! Great job. You haven’t updated your stats, have you? You’re sure not looking like a 30 BMI these days.

    I guess I’m regretting a little...

I think most of us have been there. And, when WE were, we were like, “Moan...groan...three week stall...why so slow....blah...blah...blah.” And, no kidding, many of us felt this way whether we were losing a little bit of weight or a metric butt ton. You folks seem to be doing so well! There should be a drop down for all of us about these commonly aired first few week’s issues and feelings. Because the feelings and concerns are valid. You’re going through it and it matters as much as any other issue. Here are a few things i’ve learned along the way: First, If you follow your plan, things work out for almost everyone on their own timeline. Second, The scale will stand still at times even when you are following your plan. That doesn’t mean your body isn’t changing in a positive manner. A scale doesn’t measure inches, only pounds. Third, Nothing...NOTHING good comes from comparing your progress to another’s. Even if you are the exact height and weight. Each body has a different set of variables and the comparison thing is maddening. You’ll go bonkers trying to set your progress using someone else’s gauges. Just go with your rhythm, don’t sweat the pace, and live each day fully. Don’t miss the experience because you’re worrying about whether you’re on track. If you are following your plan, you’re on YOUR track just as you should be...going your speed. (Here’s something else I think we forget sometimes...You are the only person to whom you are accountable, the only person you can let down, the only person who can be “cheated on” in this venture. Make your choices accordingly. Respect yourself, give yourself the best possible chance and you’ll get the best possible results nearly every time.) Peace

Football game 23 days after sleeve sx

Take lots of water for the ride. I don’t know your food plan but at your stage I had to switch to solids because of a family need that required a trip to the coast. I just began carrying protein bars with me and choosing lean proteins and chewing them to purèe before swallowing. I had no trouble. By the time I returned home, there was no point in going backward again. i go to sporting events and luncheons/dinners with friends and family. Often I eat a protein bar on the way and have water while out. It’s no biggie. If I actually get hungry, I order a hot dog or burger or chicken or whatever meat I feel like having. (oh, horror). The bread and all but about 2 ozs of the meat goes immediately in the garbage or in a take out box for my kid. I slowly eat the what remains, taking the time to chew it to death and savor it. It’s not hard. Just be prepared in advance so you don’t have to make decisions on the fly. Thwart your worst impulses before they can sink you! Have fun!

    After 4 month Surgery

I assure you, you are way more active than I am at 4 months just with your children and school! That's not a great thing but it is the truth right now. Probably the most important thing you can do, at this point is follow your food plan (meet your protein goals first...always), drink, drink, drink, take your supplements and LOG EVERYTHING. If you are preserving muscle and are not 100% sedentary, you'll have something to work with when things slow down and you are ready to tackle fitness. Just don't wait too long. If you do the key elements, even without a full fitness program, you will lose weight. you just can't let the others slip. I'm still losing daily and I can't do much of anything except sit and sleep from an unrelated, elective surgery I had 2.5 weeks ago. By the way, You really should be proud of yourself for taking this on with all of your other responsibilities. You're amazing!
  17. First and foremost...fantastic job! You look super! Then, BAC47310 seems to have a handle on the good advice.

    Vitamins

My surgeon just switched me from the jillion different vitamins he had me on to a much easier regimen of 2 Barilife Multivitamins, 3 times a day. Rather than purchase them at his office, I found them here at the store a few dollars less expensive, too! The coating is vanilla scented. They dissolve quickly in the stomach. I’ve had no issues with nausea or headaches as I have with others. BONUS...these cover the calcium requirements so no extra calcium tabs to chew! The only downside is they are rather large. I can take a handful of pills and capsules at once (I was a sickly kid) so it’s no prob for me but I can see these being large for some folks. Breaking them in half might make sense.
  19. I wish you a speedy, comfortable recovery. Please keep us posted. Thank you for trusting us with your story.

My 3 month 6 day post surgery status update

You are self aware and have a good head on your shoulders. When you decide to kick it up a notch, you will do wonderfully. (Three days behind a push mower?! Are you freaking kidding me?! THAT'S a workout routine!!!)

    The Case for More Water

Gosh, I wish I liked water more. This is my biggest hurdle. I drink tons of fluid but straight water. Not so much. I know it makes a difference. Ugh!

Aldi has squatty potties for $9.99

I’m a Squatting Potty fan, too. I gave them out as Christmas gifts a couple years ago. Everyone laughed. The same people came to me later to tell me what a difference it has made in their lives. Yup. The Squatty Potty is no joke.

    Vitamins and Supplements

My surgeon is super conservative and had me on a complicated regimen of several different supplements spaced out several times a day. It was exhausting! Plus, I hated the calcium tabs. AND, all the pills were making my stomach too full for food. Wednesday, at my 3 month post op check up, he changed everything and life is so much easier! I now take 2 BARILIFE Multivitamins, 3 times a day. You swallow them and they dissolve in your belly quickly. The coating smells like vanilla but has no flavor. Done! (I also choose to take Biotin and Lutein).
