My thoughts tonight
Pennie, Lisa, Susan, Alex, other - I've been on the forum for 3 weeks only but you 'regulars' (banded or un-banded) are so important to me as a newbie who hasn't even had a fill yet. Your experiences are immeasurable. Susan and Alex - you guys are right on the money! Pennie reading your post scares me - I see myself in it. Let's face it whatever psychological reasons (or lack of) there are for obesity - it results from food addiction. I feel no different than a druggie and sometime feel what I really need is a 'detox' program where they lock me up and don't let me till I'm clean. But your post also reassures me that I am not alone in this. Lisa, it's a lot easier to hear "Get up off your butt and do the Honky Tonk Badonkadonk if you have to. Make sacrifices if you must." coming from a ex-obese person. I know that you know that :bananajump: it's easier said than done. My million dollar question to you is: How do I make my mouth do what my mind already knows". Because usually even if I'm full and have the best intentions and will power when I see IT (whatever I want to eat at that point in time) I tell my brain to shut-up and tell my tummy to make way - there's more yummy food on the way. My obedient tummy 'makes space' and what do you know I start to believe I am eating because I guess I am hungry. This belief is real hunger. :help: .......I know I'm rambling!!! But since this is a support group...................... Anyone else play these mind games with themselves then later kick themselves for losing? * justamom *

This year I was feeling dissapointed that we wouldn't be able to. Since you handeled it fine I think I'll keep up the tradition - 20 yrs!!!. Nykee - I'm planning to keep your experience in mind and not over do it!

almost a month out..
Lauren, I was banded 1/16 - so I'm 3 wks in. I can eat rice - the most I've had is about 1/3 cup at a time; I have also had bread - about 1/2 slice. I've eaten the rice in Soups and bread as a 'sandwich'. The bread is definately more filling but not where i've felt sick. I think bread/rice are a very individual thing. If you haven't had a fill and feel like you are eating as you were pre-banding - I would suggest start trying to eat small amount and see how you do. BTW - I am eating pizza (picking the top off) - so far so good. Good luck with rice!

Red Neck Bra
Hey Asphalt Angel - I hope I say the same especially after Ive achieved my weight loss goal!

Xenical
Ditto on yucky! I tried it but gave up after just a few weeks especially because I didn't really lose weight - maybe a couple of lbs that's all. It only blocks fats so if someones eating a lot of other things it won't help them. Now as a bandster I would worry about taking it because with a limited diet (band imposed) and better diet (hopefully self imposed) it would probably deplete the necessary fats our body needs. Although OTC will probably be a lesser strength than prescription.

Ouch my shoulder
Thanks Suzi! I am a Spivak patient as well; I'll try the yogurt thing.

Curves
Wow Robyn - 71 lbs in 6 months - that's awesome! I'm banded 2 weeks and have lost only 9-10 lbs. I'm dissapointed. I want to do Curves but will wait another couple of week. I don't want to risk injury. When did you all start exercise (other than walking)?

taxes
Wow - I never realized we could deduct this. I was self-pay so this is awesome! Thanks for all the useful info.

New coping strategies
Mikey - can't go wrong with #3 and #8. If you really want to splruge - go to Walmart! Seriously, just changing my surroundings works for me sometimes.

scar tissue build up around port
Me three guys (or gals I guess)! Mine is the size of a golf ball and I have the low/small profile. Mine maybe swelling though - I'm starting my 3rd week banded. It is also tender.

What's up everyone?
Yeah - you were right the best me - that 1/2 a veggie burger was too much - I didn't PB but I sure was uncomfortable. I'm sticking to my mushies!

how many times have u PBed?
I have a dumb question (yeah - I'm new to being banded)......If one PBs, does it happen after you've had at least one fill. I'm 2 wks in being banded and have never come close to experiencing any PB as described - so do I need to have my first fill to know what you guys are talking about?

Considering Lap Band in India
Don't do it! I'm an American Indian - grew up here but still have a lot of family etc. there. I know of Apollo - it is an okay place but can't compare to centers here especially in terms of infection rates, ability to deal with complications, pain management, bedside manners, etc......We are VERY spoiled here! My spouse is a physician (grew up in India and knows colleagues working at Apollo) - he would never suggest anyone to have surgery overseas (India, Mexico, or probably even Europe). The most important thing we looked for was in a physician was: in our are and had done 500+ procedures. My Hubby even asked for special permission (professional courtesy) to watch a surgery before I got banded. It really does take doc 100-200 procedures before they can do it 'flawlessly'. I was self-pay, my insurance wouldn't cover it. It cost me $15K. Good Luck with your decision!

Hardest behavior for you to change?
I've only been banded 2 weeks and I want to eat, eat, and eat! I'm trying to teach myself what being full means. It's hard not to snack. But at least my meals is appropriately sized.

Stage One
I've been banded 2 weeks and am starting to eat soft foods. But after the initial 3-4 days my doctor told me it was okay to eat thick Soups. I had green pea soup (Campbell puree type - not the Progress chunky), cream of potato, the new Campbell select butternut squash. I had mashed potatoes and oatmeal - oatmeal was a really nice filling meal. I was careful to not eat more than 2-4 oz. (1/4 - 1/2 cup) at a time. Also, I couldn't down the Protein drinks. So I got the sugar-free Carnation instant Breakfast and Carnation Malt powder. When I mixed 8 oz. skim milk, a packet of the powder and a serving of the malt powder (3 Tbs.) it's about 10 gms of protein about 230 Calories - similar to the Protein Drinks but no Vitamin smell or taste.

Ouch my shoulder
Thanks for all your thoughts! I am now 2 weeks post banded and you all were correct - my pain is almost gone. It only comes when I have over exerted myself during the course of the day or if I haven't eaten in a while. Once I eat something it gets better. BTW - I lost about 10 pound the first week - nothing this last week. Is this normal?

What hospital does Dr. Spival use?
I used Dr. Spivak at the Physican's Surgery Center on Main St. - great group of drs. and support staff there. I was banded just 10 days ago.
