Postop day 17, spent 2 weeks in hospital due to complications...home sweet home down 12 pounds in 4 days!!

Oh no! What type of complications did you have, if you don’t mind me asking? Glad your home. Congrats on the weight loss!

I had a leak, at the anastomoses of esophagus and duodenum, everything I sipped or swallowed went into the abdominal cavity and I had to have a second surgery 3 days later to washout the abdomen and fix the leak, an exploratory laparotomy, and ended with 5 drains, 2 which drained abscesses and a NG tube, antibiotics for the infections... I did the research and understood DS may have great results at weight loss, but higher % of complications compared to other WLS...like the loose stools and gas..I’m still on antibiotics but feeing better each day!

  2. Will do!! I have an appt for labs in August may go sooner if I’m feeling sluggish.. I’ve read reviews from DS patients that didn’t have an issue.. so I’ll just have to find another source to cover everything... out local hospital is Bariatric accredited Ans sells Bariatric Vitamins and foods in-house so that will bey go to !! Thanks for the heads up!! I have a month supply and will use accordingly and go from there

  3. Thank you! I’m a ER/Trauma RN who has totally complied with the walking every 3 hours even though I had pain and the sips. The docs, residents and nurses say I look to good to have gone thru so much . (Have my own pjs, and put my earrings and Fitbit back on) Today I feel great my pain is there I try to breath through it...but it’s lessening and I find making a Note of what to avoid helps a lot ,, thx again for your well wishes

  4. Thanks for the tips !! Looking forward to feeling better, in the hospital for another week due to some complications.. Surprised to have gained in hospital on clears and IV fluids I’m up 15 pounds PLUS GAS TOO...that’s still trapped...
    Awesome successful journey!
It didn’t happen overnight so I’m prepared for the peaks and valleys...but it’s on when I get home! I bought a new scale that’ll sync to my Fitbit, with all my stats,

  5. I had DS surgery June 12 and felt slight soreness, nothing unusual, felt ready to 24 hours laterPOD 1...then it hit with a ton of bricks, POD 2, excruciating pain, high heart rate and inability to walk.. had a cat scan it was negative for leak... POD3my surgeon wasn’t convinced and Wanted too keep me to see how I was feeling wasn’t quite up to par but pain controlled still walking, every 3 hours slow but steady..POD4 woke up with fever103.9 and heart in 120’s.

Plan was exploratory lap 2 hours later, came out of OR with 3 drains and a NGT to decompress stomach and a PCA..for pain control, he found a teeny tiny leak, restitched it and covered with muscle. Washed the cavity hence the drains. Now on antibiotics and fluids...And another week here in the hospital. The upside I have a great team of nurses and docs at a nationally accredited metabolic and Bariatric center... I’m getting awesome care. I read so much research studies and articles prior to the DS I knew the switch has more complications but greater results! The benefits outweigh the risks .... peace and live my bench buddies !

  6. Thanks! I feel great.. up and about less than 12 hours post op no nausea, minimal surgical pain...we ar so close in stats..... this time next year that’s we’re i want to be, where you are! No rush, steady loss! Please fill me in when you get a moment... ups and downs, diet, stalls, exercise...etc! One question did you have the sleeve at the same time or previously?

  7. 3 months ago this was a random thought, revision surgery! Best thought I ever had, I’m ready for 7:45 6/12...I’ve ordered the vitamin patches, tomorrow will stock up on Protein beverages, have gained so much insight from others on this forum and the Facebook page...working tomorrow till 3am then to the hospital at 5:45. I’ve lost weight since the process started, took pics and measurements today, I’m fired up and ready to go! If I have any surgery twins let’s keep in touch and inspire and motivate each other!

  8. I told one person, a good friend at work, and only told her because when I went to my psych appt she strongly suggested to tell at least one person.. I decided I’m not going to tell anyone this time around, I spread the word the first time with the sleeve and had weight regain, and never heard the end of it from my mom who had RNY 15 years ago and has kept off 175 pounds..I opted for the duodenal switch and should be scheduled for surgery next week at my clearance appt...

  9. I’m one week out from surgery and my husband and best friend are making menhavwbsecond thoughts. They have no idea they both agree. My husband says I’ve had enough surgeries during my lifetime from car accidents and complications post car accident. I’ve also have a history of sepsis (infection) every time I get opens up for surgery. He know what I went through with all that.ni think he’s just afraid of what could happen or me not pulling through this time ans my friend said likewise. I really and and nee this surgery but now I feel like I’m second guessing myself. My initial plan was to have the sleev but the doctor takes me into duodenal switch because it’s less likely for weight gain. I agreed but also has second thoughts about that particular lad surgery just because of all the additional nutrients you malabsorption va the other surgeries. In my head I was also think duodenal would allow me to lose weight faster than the sleeve. Then again i don’t want to loose too much I don’t want to be looking too skinny from excessive weight lost from duodenal (CW 232 GW 150-160). Although not reversible the sleeve is less invasive and not switching around parts. Then again I’ve had a gastric ballon (obera ballon) and maybe lost 10 pound at most so that was also my reasoning for wanting duodenal switch more aggressive than sleeve as to me the obera balloonMimics restriction just like sleeve but it’s temporary.
As you can see I’m a week out from surgery and all over the place. HELP!!!
Has anyone that is slightly obese or obese who has extremely hard time losing weight even with diet or excercise had success from the sleeve? How fast did you lose weight?

I’m suggesting to you DS.. coming from someone who 8s obese and had sleeve with little Loss and gained it back, besides...the data has showed DS offers the highest success rates for weight loss and keeping it off 5 years out.. in the end you have to do what is s right for you and not listen to the noise..I wish you all the best!

  12. Greetings, I am getting the DS and ohh so excited, I had the sleeve and had weight gain now I am close to my original starting weight, I started the process of DS a few months ago with the intention of sleeve revision or gastric bypass, and my surgeon discussed my options and DS it is! So good people of this forum, I am seeking advice, pearls of wisdom, any info you care to share. I am an RN and have researched all the data, pros and cons, now I want to listen to those who have experienced the surgery and their story. Thanks a million
