I had my WL surgery on 10/12/17. I just had surgery for kidney stones on 3/30/18. The kidney stone surgery was way worse than the sleeve surgery. I had ureterscopy surgery where they go in an laser the stones thru your urethra. I did pass one stone which was about 5mm and my doctor removed 2 other stones during surgery those were about 9mm each. I had to wear a stent after the surgery and on top of that I had an infection. My doctor wasn’t able to get all the stones because they were inside of my kidneys and she didn’t have access to them. After all of this I did meet with my dietician for some advice. And she was able to give me some tips.
It’s really hard to manage your diet between the sleeve restrictions and kidney stone restrictions, but I am trying and I’m drinking all the Water I can.
This is what my stones were made up of:
40% Calcium oxalate monohydrate
30% Calcium oxalate dihydrate
20% Calcium phosphate
20% ammonium Acid urate
I did have kidney stones before my surgery but never stones this size or this many.
My Urologist told me to drink at least 100 oz of Water and stay away from animal Protein. Although my dietician says I can have 6 oz or less a day of animal Protein. So I guess I’ll see how it goes. I take another x-ray in June to see if I have any additional stones.
Oh you poor thing I am so sorry. This terrifies me honestly.
So are you sticking to protien shakes and supplements?
Have you been on a calcium supplement?
I hope I do not have issues bit I already know I am prone to stones so this is why I started this thread.
I hope they get better. Did they recommend eating or drinking anything other than Water to reduce risk?
Have you been able to get 100oz of water in a day? That is so much and I haven't even been sleeved yet ☹️[emoji25]

good to know i will have to check into this as well.
Its a struggle as the diet that we are supposed to follow post op is what you should avoid with stones

I needed parathyroid gland surgery to correct it (NOT related to the thyroid, just nearby). It was left untreated way too long and I needed major surgery instead of minor and wound up with osteopenia from it.
i will for sure have mine checked thank you!
i have only ever had 2 stones but if i get another one we are definitely be doing some tests. nasty little things.

Most people get Calcium oxalate stones....and it's easy to think....if I have too much calcium, I'll get stones! Must not take too much calcium!
Except, typically...this is a VERY bad idea....because dietary calcium BINDS with dietary oxalate so it can be safety passed and NOT turn into stones. Stopping calcium might actually INCREASE your risk of stones if you eat oxalate rich foods.
I know this all sounds bizarre......but please check with your doctor to be sure you're following the best protocol for you and your specific situation.
To avoid stones.....Drink lots of Water. Avoid salt. Limit animal Protein.
Study a list of oxalate rich foods and eat them sparingly.
This is true if you are using a natural source of calcium. If you are taking a supplement you can increase the chances of stones.

I'm still pre op and didn't ever have mine tested but yes I am going to talk to my doctor and see what they suggest. -
Thank you! I'll be 20 in May. I recovered pretty quickly and I think you will too! You can do this [emoji123]

Now I feel old [emoji23]
I'm excited to be post op. This process is taking forever but it will be worth it.jennypenny1998 reacted to this -
I have had them on and off sense I was in my 20’s. I have an elevated level of Calcium in both my blood and urine. I had all the tests and nothing medical going on, just one of those **** happens kind of things. I was taking something but I could not tell you what it was. After my surgery, we retested and I was almost normal.
BTW
When I got my list of Vitamins to take…The Calcium supplement was X’ed out in red
Awesome I hope that this will help then! That's great they are not fun at all I have had some people tell me that they were worse than the surgery! I will probably have my blood and urine tested to see. It's been about a year since my last one and I don't want another! -
Oh girl I hate the gym too! lol I am 5 ft even and still have my gallbladder. I feel like it's a little harder to look like I've lost weight since I'm short but there is definitely a difference between pre op and post op. How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? We seem to have a lot of the same stats.. [emoji4] we def could help each other!
We do have similar stats! I still have mine too haha I just ask because I know some people have issues with it after surgery. Hoping I'm not one of them!
I am 5' 3" and I am 27, I'll be 28 in August [emoji4]
I am sure you look great I know it can be hard to see a change in yourself! You've lost a lot of weight! That is something to be proud of

I have the same problem as you. My wife had the bypass and that’s what I was going to get. My kidney doctor recommended that I get the sleeve as the bypass would put me at a higher risk of stones. I am 5 months out and no signs of them. Here’s the thing though…As the weight is coming off my Calcium level is going down. Not normal and might never be but it was low enough to stop the meds for itAh I see I have only had 2 and never had the chance to get them tested to see what they were made of. I know that is a key in stones so you can figure out what excess minerals are there.
We're your stones Calcium? Is that what you mean by the levels going down?
So were you on medication to help prevent kidney stones?
I am glad to hear you haven't had issues. Stones are the worst! I seemed to get mine around the time that I was following a Keto diet. So that could have been the cause.
-
I'm hoping to get to 130 too, so we pretty much have the same starting weight and goal weight! I know exactly how you feel. I'm hoping the Keto diet works for me too. The sleeve is such a great tool! Especially if you are good at going to the gym (which I'm not LOL)
I hate the gym haha I am uncomfortable there... But I need to go. I have 2 boxers that get me out and walking everyday so that is good.
I definitely need this tool I am so tired of being the fat one 🤷[emoji23]
130 is only 40 pounds away your so close! How tall are you?
I am sure you will get there! You are doing really well! Do you still have your gallbladder?jennypenny1998 reacted to this -
Wow, that's awesome! How long were you on it?
It's very hard to stay on track. Even now with surgery, I catch myself trying to eat how I used to. Fortunately, my body doesn't let me anymore lol I haven't gained any weight, but have stayed around 170 lbs. My highest weight was around 230. What is good about surgery (at least in my case) is that although you can hit a weight loss stall, it's a whole lot harder to gain more back.
Yeah I know exactly what you are talking about. I did Keto for about 9 ish weeks. I was also going to the gym 6 days a week.
Yeah this is why I want surgery I have lost and gained that same 30 pounds back way to many times. That is about where I am at 230 I'm hoping to make it down to at least 150 or lower [emoji4]
That's awesome 170 is great I am sure you will continue to loose! Keto was one of the easier diets I had tried honestly. -
I'm actually trying the Keto diet now. How did it work for you? Did you lose any weight?I did I lost about 30 pounds. I haven't had surgery yet but it was the one diet that did actually work for me.
I unfortunately let myself fall back into old habits and have gained about 15 back ☹️

I think I have experienced it pre-surgery too. back in the day, if I drank a sugary drink, i'd get all of the dumping symptoms. I just never knew what it was. anything like a wine cooler, glass of OJ or syrupy sweet drink would almost always do it. and I was like 120#.
I think I've also experienced it pre op. There has been times where I was in Keto and I'd cheat and get a cookie and drink from a local place and it always made me feel soooo sick. I didn't eat Cookies from there for about 6 months because I felt so crappy. Lots of nausea.jennypenny1998 reacted to this -
I have had kidney stones prior to wls I am wondering.if anyone has issues with them post op?
If so did you get them before surgery, have they gotten worse?
I am certainly hoping not I know after surgery I will be much more concious of the Water intake I am getting.
But it scares me those little suckers were the worst.
-
That sounds terrible I'm sorry you guys experience it. I knew it happened to some sleevers not all but some. I hope I don't get it!
-
Yeah I know sleevers typically don't dump but I have seen that some people have. Just curious if anyone had any issues. I hope I don't!

Had anyone who had the sleeve had dumping syndrome?
If so do you know what caused it?
This is a fear of mine post surgery.

My health is fantastic, Type one pre surgery my a1c is in the non diabetic range. I'm in the best shape of my life, I am making up for lost time.
Only one small complication. Reactive hypoglycemia ( Low blood sugars ) Its manageable with food. I've been managing my blood sugars all my life so this is nothing new.
That is so good to hear! I feel like being in that +-10lb range is pretty normal and ok i feel like most "normal" people chase that range of weight!
plus 10 pounds is doable if you are managing it at 10 and not 100 that is amazing!
Glad to hear you haven't had many side effects! I haven't had any issues with blood sugars but i am glad it is manageable after the sleeve!
i cant wait to be on the other side of this!
Congrats on getting your life back

There’s a medication called Actigall your doc can prescribe during the loss phase if your gall bladder is fine now
Oh ok ill have to ask my surgeon about it when i talk with her!
jess9395 reacted to this -
Obesity can cause gallstones. So can rapid weight loss.
I don’t miss jr
I know it's a double ended sword. I looked it up and being larger around your midsection (me) is a main reason people get them haha. I guess I'll see what my doctor says [emoji108] -
No I understood what you mean, the post ops don’t tend to hang around on the site past a few years!
I had my gallbladder removed several years before my WLS so I’m not a good one to ask on that!
Thank you so much! sorry i worded that weird i totally didn't mean people wern't maintaining their weight loss i meant people that had met goal and are in the "maintaining phase"
That doesn't sound too bad, as you've said you shouldn't eat those anyway! i am glad to hear you are doing so well 5 years post op!
One question do you still have your gallbladder?
Gah it seems like everyone has had it removed during surgery or already had it out. That is one thing I am slightly worried about but I guess I will just make sure it's checked beforehand and if they see anything I'll look into same time removal
