  1. Are you drinking enough water? You should be doing a minimum of 64 ounces per day. I am rarely hungry and I'm almost 6 months out - but that's mainly attributable to the water consumption I intake on a daily basis. Also are you drinking with your meals? I know you're on a liquid diet, but even so, according to my nutritionist, I shouldn't drink 10 minutes before, during (25 minutes to eat), or 30 minutes after my meal. This allows your stomach to "chew" on the sustenance you just put in there before washing it through. That means for 3 hours and 15 minutes of the day, I'm not drinking anything. For the other 9-10 hours I'm awake, I'm CONSTANTLY sipping water. I never have a minute where I don't have a bottle of water within my grasp.

    Hair loss

Missouri-Lee's Summit - not to scare you, but I, too, had beautiful hair - a thick head of hair - so thick that I used to joke with my hairdressers to shave off 1/2 of it (underneath) because it was too thick! It used to take my hairdresser at least an hour to dry my hair straight - there would be 5 layers - I've even had 2 stylists working on me at once when I wore it longer. My surgery was March 5th. I started noticing the hair thinning in July - and it has continued through now. From what I've read, it usually occurs between 6 and 12 months and can last for 4-6 months. My hair is baby fine thin now. I even went to a wig shop and set up an appointment because if it continues thinning out (they said it could last for several months) - I may get a topper or full wig (insurance won't cover, but I'm willing to spend the $300-$1000). I just got it cut shorter to my shoulders and am trying to make it look thicker by using mousse and other thickening products in it. II did start taking Viviscal today - it's supposed to help promote thicker/faster hair growth. I will let you know if I notice any results. I really hope you don't have to face it because it can be quite disconcerting seeing so much hair everytime you wash, brush, or run your fingers through...but if it does happen, just remember it's only temporary. It will grow back! That's what I keep telling myself.
  3. Me at my heaviest - size 20 and me today - size 10. Enjoying the journey. 77 pounds lost, 44 to go to reach goal!

    Bariatric Surgery Misconceptions

I understand your fears - I had similar ones. But today, now 5 months post-op, I can say without any reservation that this was the best decision I've ever made in my life. Here's me at my highest - and today. From a size 20 to a size 10. I still have work to do, but all of my labs are normal, I'm out of the obese category, I can walk, bike, run, swim (even look good in a bathing suit!), Just know the first few weeks are going to be tough. I've had both laproscopic gall bladder removal and a C-section. My recovery from GB was somewhere in the middle. Not as tough as C-section, but a bit harder than gall bladder removal. I went back to work after a week (telework in my pjs) - and back to my full days by week 2. I walked every day and followed my surgeon's/nutritionists directions exactly as written. No variation. To date I've lost 77 pounds (44 to go!)
  5. Just for clarification - I believe you said the September meeting would be September 4th - the Day after Labor Day? i put that on my calendar as I'm not sure I can make next Thursday's meeting either.

    Hair loss

I'm right there with you - had surgery March 5th - started noticing hair thinning in July. I had a thick head of hair so no one but me really notices. But i'm so ready for it to begin regrowing! A friend recommended Viviscal vitamins for hair - so I'm going to pick some up today and try that. Apparently it takes about a month to start working - but I really want my hair to get thicker soon
  7. PPS - I'm going to try and make the September meeting! And maybe the Hospital one next Thursday...
  8. PS - I turned 50 March 10th. Spent my 50th birthday recovering Will celebrate the milestone birthday next March on a beach - in a bikini - with my husband once I reach goal!
  9. I had surgery March 5th and do not experience any nausea on a daily basis. In fact, I have been remarkably healthy since the surgery. I've only had 2 episodes of dumping syndrome - where I've immediately regurgitated the food I tried to eat - both times it was because they were too spicy and eating too fast. Just a mistake on my part. Lesson learned! Meet with the dietician, begin the process - I lost weight even before the surgery so even starting with his office reaps rewards! And you have time to make the decision. I would also follow-up with your General practitioner - get some blood work - you may find that sleep apnea is only one issue you are facing. For me it was pre-diabetes, pre-hypertensive - I was beginning to have mobility issues as I got older - arthritis pain in knees and hips. Post surgery all of my labs are back to normal and I have no pains in any joints. I can bike, walk, run, ski, dance and have tons of energy. I understand you're scared, but this truly is an amazing tool - a gift to myself.
  10. Stopped by a store last night - just to check - and yep! I can now wear a size 10 dress comfortably! Loving my new body, new energy, new menu, new me! I need to work out more though. That's my next step. Increased cardio! Will let you know how it goes!

    I know everyone has them

I would say if you're working out then you may need to INCREASE your calories. Talk to your nutritionist - but if you're intake is only 500 calories and you work out - you are starving your body which means it will hold onto every single pound. Another thing you didn't address is are you drinking enough water? Water is what helps flush away the fat cells - my nutritionist insists on at least 64 ounces of water per day. I exceed that every day. Stalls will happen. The body has undergone a traumatic event and it needs time to readjust, heal, and begin again. I know if i follow my program, the weight will come off. Not all at once, not fast - this is a lifetime change. I don't expect to hit my goal weight until 12-18 months post surgery. Just keep doing the right thing every day. But do look into how many calories you should be consuming for the amount of work out you're doing. I think that may be a factor in the protracted stall.

Great job JerriB! I am experiencing hair thinning as well - Used to have a thick head of hair, now it's very wispy. This will pass. I'm trying to increase my protein intake and I'm going to start taking a prenatal vitamin as well. The hair will grow back. It's just a trauma reaction to the rapid weight loss and change in diet. I'm considering extensions or a wig if it continues to fall out - but for me it's a small price to pay for recapturing my health We will get through this. I have 46 more pounds I want to lose to reach goal.

Make sure you are taking your vitamins every day. Also, check in with your Dr./Nutritionist to see if there are other things you can do. I may be experiencing it, but I have a very thick head of hair, so I haven't noticed too much. Congratulations on the weight loss!

Hello MGBG-ers! Had my 3 month follow-up yesterday with my surgeon. Everything looks great! All of my labs are normal - my A1C is excellent, my Vitamin D is back to normal range, all vitals look excellent! Weight loss is on track and I am completely free to do any form of exercise that I want - no restrictions I plateaued for about a week again - but I'm ok with that. It gives my skin time to catch up and I view these plateaus as the perfect time to do toning exercises for my stomach and arms. But this morning, the scale started moving again! I know things will slow down - but I also know that I will continue to lose weight for the next year or so (12-18 months is the window of most weight loss) Hope everyone is doing well!

    Plus Size Clothing

I've been shopping at Loft and Ann Taylor. Dress Barn also has some nice choices for summer - particularly dresses and skirts. I love that I can walk into any store now and try on clothes

For me, the styles I used to wear at size 20 no longer are flattering at a size 12 - so I have to try everything on. Another strange thing - depending on what brand you're shopping - all sizes are not the same. A size 12 in one brand may be a size 10 in another - or 14 in another! The dressing room has now become my best friend! And I admit, shopping is fun now - everything fits. And it always makes me smile when I have to ask the sales lady for a smaller size *grin*

That's the first thing I did - was go to Victoria's Secret to get properly measured for a bra. I am now happily a 36DD I'm sure that will continue to go down and I'm ok with that. But it was so nice to be able to buy a bra that actually fit!
