  1. Mine is average with a little extra I’d say. He has been having to fend for himself and has been eating a lot of Pasta and tacos since I had surgery. He doesn’t gain weight too quickly and he seems to be able to shed it more quickly than me (well, at least more quickly than I did pre-surgery).

I’m hoping as I progress through the stages, he can adopt some of the healthier habits that I’ll have so we can both be healthier. :)

  2. If it’s caffeinated coffee, idk I wouldn’t count that, because it dehydrates you.

Thanks for the tips! I have been trying to prioritize drinking above all else to make up for it... if I don’t get enough Protein via food- I just make it up in shakes.< br />
I know we’re not supposed to use straws, but has anyone found that they make it easier to get fluids in? I feel like little sips are easier with a straw vs no straw.

This is an interesting discussion. I take Cymbalta, Lamictal, and Lexapro. There is almost no information about psych meds after RNY. My surgeon said I “should be fine.” My psychiatrist said we can “reevaluate after surgery.” In the meantime I am 6 days post-op RNY, hiatal hernia repair, 50% removal of my stomach, and I don’t know if I am still fuzzy headed and nauseous because of dehydration or med withdrawal. I feel like I made a horrible mistake that I can’t take back. Should I crush, take whole, open the Cymbalta capsule?? Would a pharmacist have a better idea about absorption?

You cannot crush cymbalta. It’s extended release. I’ve heard of people opening them and using the little beads to ween themselves off of it.

Are you unable to swallow it? They had me swallow tablets very soon after surgery. I understand your frustration and wasn’t given clear answers about how to handle. I will say that switching to non-xr Wellbutrin and going from cymbalta to celexa has had no negative impacts on me. However- psych meds really depend on the person and what works for one may not work for another.

  4. I think tests by cardiologists vary depending on the doctor and patient. I am an existing cardiological patient so I just had to have my cardiologist say okay (I have a minor valve issue) and have a normal EKG... as I’ve already had numerous cardiological tests.

However, at the very least you can expect an EKG. The stress test may be reserved for those with certain risk factors.

Hi all – Hope everyone is doing well with their recovery! I’m set to join you all in just 11 days!!!

I wanted to post a funny story here that I though you would appreciate.

My mom is very supportive of my surgery even though her Bypass didn’t go well (and she never followed the rules). I’ve had very honest discussions with her before about how critical it is to eat healthy after WLS and why her surgery wasn’t that successful. But I had a conversation with her last night that emphasized her lack of willingness to change and was a prime example of the type of person she is.

She was trying to coordinate a dinner with my family and some of her neighbors. She asked if the end of this month would work for me. I told her no because I’ll be transitioning with my food and I may still be on some combination of liquid and puree. Her response was, “Well if we go someplace with milkshakes you could have that. That’s liquid.”

Yes mom, milkshakes. That’s what my liquid diet will consist of.

Oh man! 😂😂 I don’t see how people can handle stuff like that so soon. I feel like I’ve been pretty lucky on tolerating things and the mere thought of a milkshake at this point makes my pouch turn.

    Also.. 11 days!!!!! Awesome!!!

Well my late husband was, until shortly before his death , 3 inches taller and outweighed me by 30-50 pounds. So he was BIG, did he believe it? Nope, he never missed a chance to ridicule my appearance size and family members. To his credit never to anyone outside ,especially his friends. To his detriment, in front of our children , to this day, R.D. refers to me as a fat cow because that was what Daddy Dear said . Truly sadder yet, she inherited D.D.'s heavy bone structure, so she is wider across the rump than me but she tells all her buddy-buddies on Facebook she is a Size 14. RD stands for Rotten Daughter, and she earned it, bad enough she treats me abysmally but she misses few chances to be mean to Tomkitten, mainly because he lives with and sticks up for me. And I do still love her, she was my first born my baby 👧 but I don't like her, and her actions. Tried to tell her I was planning surgery, she turned the conversation back to her favorite subject, her! I finally got a word in. edgewise to ask her "did you hear,me say oh was going to have major surgery? Her answer "Whatever" I keep waiting for her to reach the age of reason,at 49 it just isn't going to happen. Sad isn't it?
Super sad to hear this. As someone who has lost both a parent and a sibling, I always hate to see people take their loved ones for granted or abuse them. Family should lift each other up- not put each other down.

  7. I was on cymbalta and Wellbutrin xl... and they switched me to celexa and non-xl version of Wellbutrin.

My surgeon advised that the only issue was extended release meds. My primary said everything had to be tablet and crushable.
My psychiatric NP said we’d have to wait and see if I needed to change. It was frustrating- all those different answers. I ended up following my surgeon’s recommendation.

So far- no issues other than I get full from my morning medications. Had really strong anxiety around surgery tome, but I think that was due to switching from cymbalta to celexa.

Getting back to working out period. I'm so anxious to start but I was told not until I hit 6 weeks post op. I'm supposed to not lift over 10lbs but that's just impossible. I want to get into a routine as soon as I can and stick with it.

I am right there with you! I wanna start spin class again and work on my planking. Maybe even get a portable TRX set up for our apartment.

They told me to hold my horses, I was only allowed to walk for a few more weeks...

haha very true! though they didn’t give me a pregnancy test the day of surgery, i had taken one a week prior at my preop testing
My comment wasn’t really directed at you, but at the people who seemed miffed they were asked to take a pregnancy test.

I am glad things worked out for you! I think we’ll always find someone to stress over before surgery. For me, it was whether my EKG would be normal (I was convinced it wouldn’t) and then I was worried about not passing the nicotine test (I quit vaping in plenty of time)... so I always found something to panic over pre-op. 😂

  10. Okay- so I had to take the test, too- even though I have an IUD and literally had my period the day of surgery.

But- it could be very catastrophic for you and the potential fetus if you were pregnant during surgery... so better safe than sorry. It’s peeing in a cup- which is a painless (for most) thing to do. It’s not like they’re doing a spinal tap to see if you’re pregnant.

Giving me hope! Can’t wait to be cleared to work out so I can get back to my squats and keep my bum in place. 😂😂

I’ve got plenty of curves.. might lose some. So be it. I just want to be a healthy weight and not worry about future medical junk as much!
