    The regain posts

It came up in trending topics for me. There do seem to be a lot of very hard opinions on what the right way to do things. I’m just going to try to follow my program’s instruction for as long as I can. I know “how to eat healthy”, I just never chose to do it- so yeah- gotta work on that before I get to that stage!
  2. Wow! I am so glad you posted this. I’m a week post op and found myself searching the forum last night for “how much should I be able to drink” and “I can put away a lot of water” 😂 Glad I am not the only one! The first few days were rough, but once day 5 hit, I could get down water with ease and was able to drink a premier shake in around a half hour-40 minutes. It was getting me nervous!

Sometimes privilege prevents people from grasping the weight of their words. But yeah, yikes. 😯

    What to tell coworkers?

I was pretty open with my supervisor and folks in my department. My supervisor has been super supportive and I received a very nice arrangement from my team afterwards. I work with a great group of people and felt really comfortable sharing this part of my life with them. But your situation may be different. I was/am around 150lbs overweight and they’re a pretty bright group, so I knew/hoped/figured they would catch on to what I’d done whether I told them or not. Above that at our organization- I provided them(HR/ higher ups) with only the info they needed.
  6. Just make sure you’re vaping 0 nic e-juice. I did some research on this when I was pre-op and I would test negative on a home test for nicotine if I abstained for 8 days. There’s a chance your surgeon may use a more sensitive test, so tack on a few days to that abstain amount. Also- you can get 10 home cotinine (the metabolite of nicotine) tests on Amazon for like 7 bucks. I was where you are just a month ago!

    Stigma with WLS

I’m 34, but yeah- basically this. I have a secret surgery buddy that I did this with that wants no one to know they did it, but I’m the exact opposite! I will tell anyone I did it and really don’t care if they have anything but positivity to bring to my life.... 😂. I did this for me.

How do you know it was a false positive? I tested positive, did antibiotics, and waited to test negative, but my endo was early in my process so it didn’t delay me at all.
  9. You have a point... but my own crappy eating habits didn’t just magically appear. I’m not saying I blame my mother for decisions I made as an adult, but I definitely developed some poor eating habits as a kid! So- I guess that I’m not surprised she wants to eat those things- plus she at least asked me if it was okay to the order pizza (and I had just come home and felt so yucky still I thought it wouldn’t bother me!) Funny story- we were out and about yesterday and it got to be 2pm, she said, “soooo... when are we going to do lunch?” My response, “Oh, right... you still need to eat.” 😂😂

    This is so hard

I am five days out and felt so much like you do... up until day four when I got my hydration up and got off the painkillers. It will get better soon. I’m sure I will still have bumps in my road (like I think I caught a cold in the hospital! Grrr). But- I have gotten so much better- I just focused on trying to get the fluid goal in and sipped, sipped, sipped ice water. Also- TMI question, but have you had a BM yet? That helps a lot of people feel a bit better....
  11. Yes, I agree. Anyone in the household. That’s why I’m not so upset with my mom- she’s just visiting us to help me out post-op and lives 3 hours away. Though obviously I would love her to develop healthier eating habits for her own health, what she’s eating on a daily basis won’t impact my success like my spouse is eating will. And if I’m making steps to live a longer, healthier life- why wouldn’t I want a partner to try to do the same? Whatever diets we have when/if we have kids will impact their future health (same reason why we both quit smoking!).

Tomorrow is the big day....any advice?

If you wake up in pain (some do, some don’t) and wonder what you did, remember it’s a few days of discomfort for the rest of your life and hospitals have the best drugs! Good luck!
  13. Exactly. My biggest food issue was almost certainly snacking at night. I’d never met a salty snack I didn’t like. Also- while I may have packed on more pounds through our terrible shopping habits- I would really hope this is a chance for my spouse to clean up his eating as well... he may not have a BMI over 30, but eating loads of crap is bad for a person whether they are obese or not.
  14. Sooo the plot thickens... sent my spouse to the store to grocery shop for he and my mother... there are chips.. and cookies... You know, after my mom goes home Tuesday I think hubs and I will have a “discussion” about what being supportive means. 🙄🙄🙄

    July Gastric Bypass?

Congratulations to you too! liquids are much easier now, but really the only liquid I’ve been drinking a lot of is Water. I’m able to get down a half a Premier Protein shake or half a Protein water at a time (over like 20 minutes). Everything else I’m allowed to drink just tastes a bit blah to me... I’ve occasionally been having two ounces of bone broth cause it’s approved for me... it’s got some Protein and is warm and salty so it’s a nice reprieve.

    July Gastric Bypass?

I had bypass on the 17th. The days in the hospital sucked. Working to get liquids in the first four days was tough and I thought I would need something for pain management forever. But now I’ve gone a day without the Lortab and feel like I’m on the mend. My abs hurt much less. My weight has been crazy. My starting weight was 344. My surgery day weight was 299. I left the hospital weighing 312, and now I’m back down to 295.
  17. Hey, I am 5 days post op, too. I was pretty grumpy, too until I had a bowel movement. I was experiencing trouble with getting enough in until I got my bowels moving. Also- if you’re still on the prescription painkillers- try switching to liquid tylenol and see if that can manage your pain. The prescription painkillers take the pain away, but can cause other issues. My first few days I’ve really focused mostly on drinking water. I’ve started working in more protein, with protein waters, both broth, and a little bit of protein shakes.

    July surgery

Same! I am post op day 4 and did two suppositories, two days of miralax, and have been taking the colase they prescribed religiously... and nothing. I finally went to Rite Aid and bought the arsenal of cleaning out stuff.. enemas, milk of magnesia, doculsate tablets... and finally the milk of magnesia did it for me. Oh sweet relief! I was very close to having to turn to professional help to clear things out and am so glad to get over that hurdle!

    Hair Loss

I have been doing hair TLC for months leading up to surgery. As soon as I decided to do this, I started on Biotin. It does take awhile to notice a difference with the biotin. I also worked to get my hair as moisturized and healthy on the outside, by working with an amazing stylist. She turned me on the co-washing and I have not looked back. I use unwash bio-cleansing conditioner and absolutely love it!!!! I also don’t wash it every day. My stylist also recommended changing my part to hide recesses near my temples. She said thinning hair will be most noticeable there. I am hoping these steps will help decrease the nearly inevitable hair loss I’ll experience. At the very least my hair currently feels the healthiest it ever has!

How long was you in the hospital after gastric bypass?

I’m 34 and in upstate Ny. I had my surgery at 11:00am Tuesday and was released by 12:00pm Thursday. Honestly, I did not think I was quite ready to go home but man did how I felt rapidly improve once I was!

    Starbucks drinks

Oh man- so sad to see the sugar in the lemonade! My favorite pre-op was a black tea lemonade sweetened with stevia.

    Pre-op diet question. Please help!

So to specifically answer your question, my pre-op Diet was two weeks long and consisted of two premiere protein shakes a day and a light dinner of lean meat and non-starchy veggies. I’m not sure if I was supposed to, but I did add in sugar free popsicles and sugar free jello to help take the edge off... I can’t imagine how gross those meals must be! But unfortunately, every program seems to have their own process or diet for folks to follow and I remember being super jealous of the people who did programs that didn’t require the preop diet.

    Hospital bag

No lie. I apologized to my roomie and said, “sorry you’ve saw so much of my butt today.” I just did not have any spoons to give at the moment. The only stuff I actually used from my bag was biotene spray, deodorant, and toothbrush/paste. And I ended up wearing a front clasp wireless bra home instead of a sports bra- cause yeah, it was easier.
  24. Honestly the Chinese food smells like bologna to me and just grossed me out. The pizza last night was a bit tough on the nose, though.
