  1. So in IMG_6833.JPGeffort to reach my daily Protein goal (80 grams) without having to drink a shake everyday I have been looking for alternative protein sources.

Today I tried a bag of Quest chips in cheddar/sour cream. 21 grams of Protein~130 calories~4 grams of carbs.

I thought they were pretty good. The flavor wasn’t bad and they kinda taste like baked chips that are off brand. 🤪 I would eat them again and they helped with my desire to crunch. I was able to eat the whole bag in 1 sitting so I’m pretty sure they are sliders so I’ll have to watch it. I thought it would make a great on the go snack and the bump in protein (listed as milk isolate and whey) it what I need to meet my goals.

Anyone tried these? Is there any reason they would not make a good replacement for a Protein Drink besides maybe missing some Vitamins and minerals? The chips actually have less calories than my Protein Shakes.

  2. Haven’t watched the video yet but I will. I love me some Dr. V.

I tried explaining to someone once, I have no idea what normal feels like. I wore a size 24 women’s in the 6th grade. I’ve already lost more weight now than I ever remember losing at one time. My surgeon has a goal for me but my own goal will still leave me obese and in my mind if I could reach 250# I would be a success!! Still obese but not giving a damn. I know that’s how I feel now and maybe I’ll feel different later.

I’m scared to get excited about anything I’ve lost so far because it is no where near enough. I also know it’s only been 3 months total and 4 weeks post op and that it’s going to take time.

This process is already weird to me - I don’t like my ankles touching because I can feel the bones, my wedding set is loose on my finger and I’m starting to see the veins beneath my skin more. Very weird but totally neat at the same time.

  3. I love Protein bars...but as Jess said, be careful. They're a slider, they're carb heavy, and they taste a little too much like a candy bar:) Easy to overindulge.
Sometimes food salvage stores have Protein Bars. I hit the jackpot for my favorite brand recently. A whole pallet of them got caught in the rain and the outer boxes were ruined. The salvage store put five bars in zip lock baggies and sold them for a dollar a bag! (five bars would usually cost about seven dollars here) They had good dating, were individually wrapped and sealed....and were perfect.
I bought way too many. Am hiding them downstairs in a giant popcorn tin so they're not quite so handy:) Gonna take some to my kiddo for lunch on the run at college.

I had never heard of a food salvage store so I googled it. So neat! I’m going to check one of these out. Thx!

  4. My surgery was 2 days before you. I’ve been on puree since day one and started eating soft foods a week ago. 700-900 calories per day. I’m having no problem with food and getting plenty of liquids. I plan on starting the gym next week.

I started back with aqua aerobics a couple of weeks ago. Looking at joining a gym for weights and cardio in a few weeks.

Your current weight is my goal :)

  5. I do the Premier Protein shakes because they are genuinely the only ones I don't hate. They're only 160 calories for 30 g Protein. So if I don't feel like having real food, I can drink two and stay under 400, even with the addition of a string cheese. They say to eat 4 times a day, but I find I can barely drink a whole Protein Drink in one sitting, so I'll split one of them into 2 and that's how I get my 4 meals in a day.

I was doing premier but after surgery they did not taste the same. In a pinch I will drink one but I have to break it up over the day too. Eventually I will finish all the ones I have left over but it’s going to be slow. I’ll probably use them when I’m m running late to work or something.

I have strawberry, peach, banana and Cookies n cream. Sounds good and they were but I don’t like them now. Trying to get my husband to drink them :)

  6. I'm on soft and only able to take in ~400 a day, but I get my 60 g of Protein in with that. If I had to eat any more than I do I don't think I could do it.

I checked my journal and it looks like I’ve been consistently getting over 500 calories since 3/26. I hate Protein Drinks but do force myself to try to get in 1 each day. I use a whole cup of 2% milk (don’t like 1%) with the Unjury Protein Powder plus a bit of Peanut Butter powder. That’s about 250 calories alone. So it’s easy for me to get another 250 plus each day.

  7. 3/14 surgery- not sure how much I’ve lost. My next pre-op appointment is on the 16th. I’m trying to only weigh every few weeks. I don’t want to have to think about stalls. I’m getting between 500-800 calories a day, Protein, Vitamins and most of my Water. If I’m not losing weight then it just isn’t in the cards for me. At this point I’ve going through extreme measures to be healthy and I don’t want to obsess about my weight anymore. I know I am and will continue to lose, period.

  8. I’m taking 4 weeks and would take more if I could. It’s not the pain for me it’s the learning to feed myself again. I’m using this time to make sure I’m not rushing my meals and not drinking and all that good stuff. I still don’t have a good grasp on how much I should eat and I’m currently in the mushy stage. I had earlier problems getting Protein in because the Protein Drinks started to make me feel sick.

I have a desk job but it is mentally demanding. I took time to focus on me for a change in hopes to get on track to be successful with this new tool. If you can take the time, I would take as much as possible.

Also eating less than 500 calories right now had me wanting to take naps. I have more energy now I think in part to the Vitamins and being able to eat a little food. So I’m slowly moving away from my daily nap.

  9. This is TMI for sure...but did anyone else have diarrhea on the second and third day post op?
Everything I’ve read says Constipation is a problem after surgery but I’m finding that to be quite the opposite for me. Tell me I’m not alone.

I did and 2 weeks post op still do. I’m just so happy things are moving that I don’t care.

Earlier on I was only consuming liquids and also I think some of the medications I take have come into play as well.

  10. As a girl, pre-surgery, there was a time when I could polish off a large thick crust, extra cheese, super supreme pizza from Piggy Pies. It was NOT my finest hour. Also, have you ever lived with or had an alcoholic in your family, who hid booze? My grandfather had unopened pints of booze hidden everywhere in his house.
Is it staged? Or not? I can't answer that--I'm not a producer. But I do believe this happens in real life--even if the show is a dramatization. You're entitled to your opinion.
I actually love this doc. So to each his or her own.
(side note: it IS interesting that I don't remember ever talking to you before and you come in and comment here suddenly out of the blue -- you don't have any stats posted beyond your low low post and like count. LOL. So why not take a minute and go fill out your profile and signature ticker so we can get to know you better?)

My comment was not out of the blue. I’ve been commenting since I joined, guess it just depends on the topic.

I’m an app user so I don’t even see an option to fill out a profile - thought that was odd when I joined but it didn’t bother me.

Not ready for a ticker anyway.. my weight will go unspoken until I hit my first goal. Fortunately things are progressing well that it shouldn’t be too long.

  11. For those who think the big liver thing is a scare tactic. You should go netflix Big Ward and watch I think it was maybe Episode 6 where despite losing weight on her pre-op diet, the woman had such a secret addiction to sugar, she hid candy and cakes all over her trailer. And ate them right up to before surgery.
The doctor could literally NOT find a way into her stomach around her liver because it was that engorged. And he started to pull out. But they had to do more gyrations and positions to try to find a way in and it was extremely risky. He said it would have been one of the only times he couldn't do surgery and that he put that surgery at the top of his list for risky procedures where she was at risk of dying on the table.

Funny. I saw that episode and thought it was staged. The surgeon was so full of drama, I don’t like his “character”.

I also found it odd that her candy stash was always brand new unopened bags. I would think some of them should have been open. Just seemed pretty staged to me.

The the girl that ate at plate full of sandwiches - we never saw her eat them all. I always wonder about shows like this. I mean do people really sit and eat 2 large pizzas in a sitting? Based on stomach size how do they do that?

  12. I’m having a bit of a time judging how much I can eat. I typically try for 1/4 -1/2 of a cup. Even then it really just depends on what I’m eating.

I haven’t had any issues with the types of food thank goodness. I’ve tried Soups, ricotta bake, meatballs (chicken), mashed cauliflower, yogurts.

Today I had my first experience overeating by mistake. I tried some mushed avocado with tzatziki sauce. It was delicious and I didn’t even eat half of the avocado but I got the bloated can’t burp and wanna vomit feeling for about an hour! 🤢 it was awful.

This really is a learning experience. Trying to get in calories and Protein from actual food when you can barely eat.

  13. Try getting creative with Protein products you dont like. Drinking them is boring. sugar free pudding, protein fluff, mugcakes smoothies, , Cookies are all things ive done with protein powder. Some are easier/healthier than others, but theres so many creative ways to use the stuff that it can go from disgusting crap to edible and enjoyable
Personally I think you take any protein powder mix it with coconut flour baking powder splenda and skim milk toss in the microwave and itll taste pretty decent (if thanks to only the coconut flour)

Great ideas! Thanks! I didn’t even think about things like mug cakes and stuff. I’m not far out enough to try that but when I am I will try it.

Good saves so I don’t have to throw it out. :)

  14. @ love4040 please allow me to channel your body a moment:
"Hey love4040, it's me -your body. What do you think you're trying to pull? I thought we had a good thing going, I was in homeostasis, that's a fancy, word for balance, I was kinda happy there. Sure you were rather pudgy and all but I was getting q.s., that was medicalese for quantity sufficent Fluid, plenty of fluids and beaucoup calories and things were fine from my perspective. Then you haul me off to some hospital, take a nap and allow doctors to perform assault and battery on my sweet self. I'd call you a back-stabber except that is not where they stabbed me![emoji51] Now in addition to allowing them to hurt me you are giving me a diet that would barely keep an earthworm alive! I suppose you want me to use your fat stores for enough energy? You do? Now I thought we were friends, we have hung around together for years and now you won't give me the calories I want, fine buddy you are! Okay okay I'll try burning your fat but it's not going to be a happy time for you. I plan to give you a Headache, mess up your bowel habits, maybe I'll give you loose stools maybe hard as bricks, haven't fully decided yet. I'll make you feel weak, I'll make you cranky, I may even send my good buddy appetite or his sister-in-law nausea to visit you. I'm not happy with this new you and I just want you to know this! Oh well maybe after a while I'll resign myself to all this, but right now? Meh I don't love you so much!" ,,,,,,......Your Body[emoji20]

  15. I heard that the 30 mins before is bs. Very conflicting because on one hand Water supposedly flows right through our stomachs but on the other hand we are told not to drink it because it will cause us to feel too full or push out the Protein in our stomachs too fast.

    Which one is it?

I think maybe the truth lies somewhere in between. I think a few small sips before eating on an empty stomach doesn’t matter. I think drinking a full glass of water and immediately starting to eat is a bad idea. I don’t think water needs 30 minutes to pass through our stomachs but I would give it at least a few minutes.

There are so many opinions and misinformation regarding WLS aftercare. At the end of the day I think we all just need to do what works for us. Oh and eat protein first. :)

  16. Could you use the fruit essences liquids you find in the Soda Stream display, no calories. Could you use them for flavoring I Protein Shakes like you do with mio and crytal lite?

Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

I’ve tried this - I have Unjury strawberry Sorbet and mix it with Mio lemonade. The strawberry has a bad after taste and it’s hard to get down.

I’ve ordered the nectar sample pack.... fingers crossed.

Wish I could donate Protein products that I ended up not liking. Such a waste.

  17. I put some of the unflavored into cream of Tomato Soup and it gave it a ricotta type flavor that I found delicious! I have been struggling with getting in the Protein, but was pleasantly surprised by this combination.

I may try this. I love my Tomato Soup and if it taste cheesy that’s even better.

Today I had soft scrambled eggs with cheese. Ate the equivalent of 1 egg. It was delicious:)

Not enough Protein though. Today has been a rough day. I just don’t want anything high protein. Mixed some chocolate Premier Protein in with some no sugar added hot chocolate. It was ok.
