  1. Hello. I am new to this site. I am 50 yrs old and want to get the sleeve. However, my BMI is not quiet high enough to qualify and I do not have any major health issues. I have been on the diet roller coaster since junior high school and have tried pretty much every diet there is and I need HELP! My knees and back are killing me. But I don't think that will be enough for my PCP to give me a referral. I need 25 more lbs to reach a 40 BMI. I have a first appt with my PCP in two weeks and I'm afraid she will not be supportive. Any suggestions or tips that may help sway her decision? Thanks,

It's a Catch-22 in that it's very hard to lose weight without exercise, and it's hard to exercise when you've got so many other physical issues including being overweight. My suggestion is that when you see your doctor, don't just limit yourself to thinking that the sleeve is the only option left for you. There may be other medical options available for you that would be more appropriate for your weight and BMI given that you don't meet the qualification. Granted, 40 is usually the standard but many health plans say either 40 with no extenuating circumstances (like injury or illness) or 35 with that kind of condition.

Any chance that having the surgery in MX is an option? My BMI was a 33, and even though I was pre-diabetic that was not enough for my insurance to approve me, so I opted for self-pay in Mexico.
