    Question about hunger post-op

I’m 5 days out and have basically no hunger, any minor pangs are easily satisfied!
  2. Actually they now think that restriction is a fairly minor part of the deal as if it were solely down to this then the drive to eat would increase to compensate for losing weight and getting further from set point, leading to increased snacking and probably encouraging bad food choices. Although there is some increase in size of pouches the biggest driver of increased hunger down the line is getting further away from set-point (or below new set point) and the body via its complex control mechanisms objecting and doing what it can to increase weight again. That being said it seems rubbish food choices will decrease satiety and increase drive for more of the same
  3. Congratulations - how are things now?

    3 month follow up today

Good work! Are you on BP meds (or were you previously)

    New sleever

I was sleeved same day as you and not struggling either. My programme is just for 1 protein shake a day and the rest is soup/yoghurt/pudding/smoothie. I can get the shake/smoothie/pudding soup down grand but the yoghurts I have are a bit thicker so more challenging! It’s interesting how things evolve, for the first 3 days it was very much a ‘need to eat now’ mentality but yesterday I actually started to want food
  6. I’m doing a VLCD programme that has shakes, soups and meals packets, all around 150 calories with about 15g protein each. Dead easy as there’s good variety! I did those from a month out with a proper meal in evening and them exclusively from the two week mark. 10kg down so pretty happy! Hopefully lose 10% of body weight by surgery so 4kg to go. 9 days to go...
  7. Two weeks today I’ll be getting my VSG. Excited, impatient and anxious in equal measures I guess! First day of liquids today but vaguely followed it for an extra 2 weeks before albeit with a proper meal PM. Amazed how much better it’s made me fee already so bring on the post surgery life 😃

    Flying after sleeve

I’m flying home (2hrs flight) 48hrs after mine, I maybe wouldn’t want to do long haul for a while though!
  9. Good work - what an inspiration!
  10. You will probably need to reduce your meds as your weight comes down so best see your GP and discuss! Might be you can step down to just the metformin initially which should not cause hypos.

    Time Off Work?

I’ve booked 6 weeks which may be slightly excessive but work are happy for me to do it and I’d rather make sure I’m 100% before going back! I guess I could go back early if I feel it’s really taking the piss. Don’t have a desk job, I’m a dentist so there’s a fair bit of strange positions to contort into sometimes and my patients could do without being exposed to my post WLS mood swings 😂
  12. There’s no evidence to say there’s a correct amount for any given person. As long as your feeling good that’s what really matters. Healthy kidneys can process around 1l of urine per hour so unless you’re drinking massive amounts in one go you’re unlikely to be drinking too much!

    Face to Face Friday

Good effort! I’m starting from a similar weight to you and 23 days until my surgery - hope I do as good a job as you 🙌🏻
  14. Completely agree, however the OP was talking about a few doses, under medical supervision, whilst still in hospital.
  15. A dose or two of an NSAID won’t do anyone any harm it’s high doses for a few days that tend to be the problem.

    Help! Pre-Op Diet Dilemma

Best ask your dietician. Mine allows vegetables and veg soups alongside the protein drinks but not fruits
  17. I’m in a very similar position as you and if your name is any indication of your age a similar age! Like you I’ve dieted many times and often have lost 50lb and even more on a couple of occasions but I always seem to end each year heavier than the previous... After a lot of research and soul searching I decided to go for WLS and out of the options have gone for the sleeve - makes most sense to me from a physiology point of view and could potentially be ‘upgraded’ if required. My surgery is on 30th of this month and I’m looking forward to it! Success rates are pretty good with something like 80% maintaining at least 50% excess weight loss over 5 years. Obviously it involves work but it should make the work easier, I wouldn’t say I’m an overly emotional eater but once I start I have difficulty stopping and hopefully this will give me a hand to control this! Interestingly I was chatting to a friend yesterday who had one 5 yrs ago (I just found out) she weighs 280lb which I must admit made me doubt my choice but previously she was 420 with diabetes and various other health problems which have gone. Speaking to her though she has real deep rooted food issues which are still present and will still choose foods she knows she can eat more off rather than proteins as she struggles to eat much of them! I’m pretty confident it’ll work for me and there’s no reason it won’t for you
  18. I’m travelling to Belgium for my sleeve - cost around €6500. I like the fact that it’s a bit closer to home than the other European options and the surgeon is hugely experienced and does around 1500 procedures per year. I told my GP and he felt it was a good idea rather than either waiting for however long to get it done on the NHS here.
  19. Just remember the reasons for doing it and focus on the long term gains! I’m a similar age to you and my surgery is scheduled for 4/30, I’m also a little anxious but mainly excited. It’s only now I really realise what my excess weight has stopped me doing and can’t wait to be rid of it! There are obviously risks with any surgery bit nothing compared to not having it as far as I’m concerned. The journey to and from the hospital is probably the most dangerous part

    Getting back to Work

I’ve scheduled 6 weeks off as I want to be in a good routine before going back
  22. I’m mainly looking forward to being able to do day to day activities without breathing through my arse! Other than that I’m looking forward to: Horse riding again Being able to walk my dogs and enjoy it Kayaking Cycling
  23. Try and stay positive, you know in your gut that it’s what you want so don’t let your families anxiety pass on to you! Also please feel free to remind me of this in 5wks when I’m in the same position
