  1. Because my revision to bypass was denied I have deal with my hiatal hernia and my severe Gerd. My Gerd is so bad I'm on at least 4 to 5 different meds and I still wake up throwing up acid. My insurance won't cover anything and was told to treat medically. How do you deal with this? My hernia is ok, I can't breathe very wells and have chest pains but it's there. I knew something was wrong when I went to the gym and couldn't do the elliptical. But my dr told me to deal with it now and learn to maintain it. But how?

Did you get GERD directly after surgery?

  2. I had the gastric sleeve on June 2nd 2014, Dr. Hoyt was my surgoen at Darnell army medical and I had several complications after surgery one of which was a leak that resulted in me needing to be transferred to BAMC (in San Antonio ) and then was finally released and able to start true post op life on June 30th. I went to all my follow ups and lots of support groups meet quiet a few times everything was great (other than having 3 drs over the years and 2 surgeries to repair a umbilical hernia I had fixed during the same orginal surgery in 2014 ) I have not had a follow-up in close to 2 years or seen a nutritionist but ive maintained on the appropriate diet and stayed exercising, my start weight was 290 surgery was 273 and at my smallest was 160 (I'm 5 ' 5 1/2 ) Over past few months things have been changing, my restriction feels totally gone, I have incredible heart burn that doesn't seem to go away my food at times feels like its stacking I'm often very nauseas and I get awful stomach pains and headaches and noone can really figure it out, I feel bloated constantly Im back up too 195 regardless of me mantaining the diet and exercise and then I finally thought maybe its sleeve related? Im in the process now to figuring out how I go about getting in to another surgoen for a follow up to see if everything is okay and the hospitals nutritionist who heads the WLS program as well but its just been so long I dont even know the proper steps to take so its taking time. Is there anyone whose gone through this? Im so frustrated and defeteated and I'm at a loss as to what to do.

Is it recently you got heart burn? Or directly after surgery?

  3. Berry, the data I looked at was the stuff my surgeon gave me from www.duke.edu, and I found a very good article from Abraham et. al, 2016. Interesting views on GERD, and revision.
My GERD is absolutely terrible. doctor put me on Contrave to see if losing some of my regain would help. I'm having some side effects from the med, not too many, but it IS killing my appetite. For some reason the past 3 days I've eaten much more but today I start the increased dose of it so we'll see what happens.
It seems like eating starchy foods really helps with the GERD, and i need to stop eating that crap, so I'm going to attempt to do another round of a pre-op type diet until I see him again in a couple weeks. I hope it will help both with my weight numbers AND let me get some sleep at night. I also have another EGD and upper GI scheduled (GI doc did the initial EGD, and now surgeon wants to do his own)...
Hopefully I'll have some news, although i'm not too confident at this point that the news will be good.

There is no other options then revision to RNY to get rid of GERD?

  4. On the 5th of August 2015 I had a sleeve gastrectomy. I was in hospital for four days (1 extra day due to an infected cannula), then to my surprise I was sent home with these horse pill sized antibiotic tablets (I wasn't supposed to be taking any tablets at that stage).
The tablets hurt to swallow, and made me throw up more than once. Eventually I took my chances and stopped taking them, but I think that the damage was done. I've had a string of problems since then.
About six months ago I started noticing that swallowing hurt, sometimes to the point where I was doubled over from chest pains. It seems to just be getting worse.
Now, I've recently been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia, which was definitely not present at the time of the sleeve op. I also have to take the highest safe dose of anti-reflux medication just to keep the reflux under control.
When I finally got in to see my surgeon he recommended that the hernia is repaired, but the more I think about it and read online about treatment options, I think it might be better to just convert the sleeve to a bypass in the hope of not needing any more operations.
Does anyone have any experience with hiatus hernias after gastric sleeve surgery? If you do I'd like to get your thoughts on this as I'm pretty much at my wit's end. Thanks in advance [emoji4]

What is Hernia? Why does it come?

  5. I'm about 3.5 years past sleeve surgery and I still have to take protantazole and Zantac. Went back to doctor and I have developed a hiatal hernia. I'm going to have it surgically repaired. Bring on the PPIs for so long has caused me to experience side effects. There are studies that show prolong usage can cause drug induced lupus https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4914530/

When did you get acid reflux? Directly after surgery?
