    Seeking a buddy

Hi. I’m one of those bad stories and let me be the first to tell you it doesn’t happen to everyone. My mom had the RYN surgery about 12 years ago and she lost a significant amount of weight and has maintained a decent weight all these years. I had the gastric sleeve surgery on November 28,2017 and I got sick about 2 weeks after I came home. And it went down hill from there for me but all my complications came from the flu and not from the surgery it self. So don’t let the stories of people having complications scare you, it happens. There are a lot factors to consider too when getting the surgery. Make sure you listen to everything your surgeon is telling you and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Especially to the surgeon they are there to guide you through your journey. And make sure you’re family is well educated on what surgery you get as well, it helps a lot. My dad learned with my mom and I what he needs to do in case of emergencies and also what we’re allowed to eat and what we’re not supposed too. He held us accountable for what we ate and it helped with our weight loss. And you’re allowed to panic, it’s scary. Don’t be afraid tho. Also the support groups helped a lot as well and having this BariatricPal page helped as well. One key thing I will say is make sure you get your daily protein and vitamins! Very important! And feel free to message me if you need someone to vent to because surgery is hard but it’s easier with people in your corner. Goodluck! And I wish you the best!!

    Near death experience

The crying involuntary stopped thank god because I had a crying episode at vons the one day because they were out of something I needed. It’s tough but it took 2 1/2 months for the episodes to stop

    Near death experience

Ya I am speaking to a therapist that was one thing I talked with my loved ones about that I wanted to do because the kind of stress I was under they wouldn’t understand. Therapy has been helping and I had the support of my boyfriend helping me as well. I’m really sorry about your experience. I’ve only heard the tornado alarm in Michigan the one time and they gave me such bad chills down my back.

    Near death experience

Thank you a lot for sharing your story. I think mine thought process on why I’m not okay with death is merely the fact I had no idea what was going on and leaving behind loved ones. I’ve been trying to heal from it and I haven’t had anymore crying episodes which is really great.

    Near death experience

I ended up getting the flu and I got so dehydrated that I lost the fluid around my brain and I almost died. I got toxic metabolic encephalopathy. I’m doing better now but it was very scary and very intense
  11. I had to do a 6 month preop diet. Then I submitted my results from that I think I lost a total of 16 pounds on the diet that whole time. Then I heard back from insurance literally within two months of submitting and then I was scheduled two months after that sorta. So I got the call in September and I got the surgery in November. Don’t stress yourself out on having to wait. It’ll happen it just takes time. But try and focus on other things. I tried increasing my workouts or picking up extra shifts so that way I didn’t think about it. Are you getting the bypass or sleeve? Or have you not chosen yet?
  12. Keep an eye on it! Just like she said you can become very dehydrated and that happened to me two months post op of my sleeve surgery. I ended up getting the flu and I couldn’t keep anything down or in my body and I had a near death experience with dehydration. Please be careful and watch for symptoms. You can always call your surgeons office and see what they recommend before you go to the er. But if you do go to the er let them know you are a Bariatric patient and explain what’s wrong.

    Confused....again.

Mine was different. I had to do a 6 month pre op diet on HMR for my insurance to cover it. So I did that and then the program I was in refers me out to a surgeon. I ended up picking the one my mom used. And then after the 6 month diet I met with him and we went over what surgery I thought was best for me and compared my options and he then let me know what I needed to do diet wise and I was still doing a diet up until I got the surgery. I got the clearance from insurance in September and I was schedule for November. I ended up getting the sleeve because that was best for me. And two weeks prior to surgery I went on a strict liquid diet because the surgeon requested it. My BMI was super high. I’m now 4 months out almost 5 months and I’m down almost 100 pounds. I believe it was 94 pounds total so far. I had some set backs tho and had a near death experience two months post op so make sure you are really communicating with your surgeon. I ended up getting the flu and it caused me to be so dehydrated it almost killed me so please make sure you stay away from sick people after your surgery! Goodluck!

    Having surgery next week...

I would follow what your doctor says and try and stay away from fatty foods two weeks before your surgery. My mom had bypass and she loved it and it was the best fit for her. The dumping syndrome isn’t that bad but certain things will definitely hurt and feel like they are stuck so just be aware of how fast your eating. Another trigger my mom has for dumping is too much sugar will make her dump. But other than that it’s not bad. You’ll do great! And goodluck on your journey!

    Very discouraged

You’re doing great. I was sleeved November 28, 2017. I’m down 86 pounds but I also had a near death experience cause of the flu. Everyone is different and everyone loses at their own pace. You got this! You can do this! You may have some stalls but you can get past it!
  16. My pre op diet was 5 protein shakes a day and I believe it was one to three cups veggies. It’s hard but it’s so worth it. What surgery are you getting? Are you getting the sleeve? Or the bypass? Do you have a support system? That helped me stay accountable for my diet and they kept reminding me why I was doing the diet. And when I was head hungry I just ended up drinking water so I didn’t snack or cheat on my diet to much. You can get past this! It’ll be worth it!

    Surgery date on Monday

I also made sure to pack any Necessary paperwork you need for the hospital and I made sure to have my hair braided so that way I didn’t have to worry about it

    Surgery date on Monday

I remember I packed a pair of warm socks because it can be cold in the hospital room. And a pair of slippers that way I could walk around and my tooth brush and some tooth paste. And a change of clothes so when I went home. You’re gonna be sore and in some pain and be uncomfortable but it’ll be worth if. You got this! This is just the beginning of the journey but the results will be worth it!

    Hair loss?

I got sleeved in November of 2017. At around 3 months I started getting hair loss but I also had a very bad near death experience as well. When I woke up in the hospital my mother made the decision to cut my hair to help maintain while I was in the hospital. So I have it shoulder length. I increased my protein and I use nioxin hair growth shampoo and conditioner. And it’s been helping. I used their website to figure out what shampoo and conditioner would be best for me then I bought it off amazon. And hair loss is natural within the first year but as long as you stay on top of your protein you should be fine. But trust me it’s an emotional roller coaster as well so I understand what you’re going through

    Hair loss :(

What do you do for work? And dont stress cause my mom learned the hard way that helped cause her stall. It’ll all be okay and work out.
