My gastric bypass is a little over 3 weeks away and I’m starting to get freaked out a little. I keep thinking about the foods I love that I’ll never get to enjoy again. I’m worried that food will get stuck and I’ll have to throw up or go to the hospital. I’m scared I’ll never enjoy a meal again. Are these fears logical or things I should be worrying about?

    Thanks all.

    Megan

Relax! As my surgeon is fond of saying, this is one of the most routine forms of major surgery out there. Only a fraction of a percentage have problems which is statistically insignificant. There will be some foods that you may no longer like after surgery. For me, I cannot stand french fries, pizza, or soft pretzels anymore - those were some of my favorite foods. Just the thought of them is enough to make my stomach turn. I also don't like flour or wheat tortillas anymore - I just cannot digest them. I find I really crave the more nutritious of options. I haven't tried steak but I do okay with burgers and I like chicken. When you get to eating regular foods after surgery, you may be pleasantly surprised. I really like how I don't crave junk food anymore.

You carried a child in your womb for 9 months. You experienced extreme nausea, had a painful labor and ended up with a c-section. You gained a lot of weight and wasn't able to go back to your old size. You tried to diet, did a little exercise but wasn't able to lose even a single pound. You are very eager and willing to go back to work but your boss told you that you need to lose more weight first before you can proceed and face your clients. How would you feel about all these?! It's so frustrating, depressing, sad...name it! How will you overcome all these?

Sue them out of existence. This is illegal!

I agree with your assessment.....tried both of these and was just kind of underwhelmed. The Cookies and cream one just tasted a little weird overall and the peach did not taste like peaches. Only using them nowadays as a coffee creamer and I alternate caramel and vanilla. Stocked up at Sam's this week due to monthly sale ($12.66 per 12 pack) so I am set for a while.

I laugh because that's exactly how I felt. I kinda said to my self sarcastically, "Well this is a pleasant surprise .... not!"

Mashed potatoes are part of MANY approved post-op plans. I ate a ton of them. Didn't hinder my weight loss at all.

We are at the mercy of an emerging science...doctors and nutritionists have their own ideas and prejudices...but the hard science has yet to written for these very grey waters.

Best to work with your group and follow their instructions. but be careful about believing you have the one answer for all....because chances are pretty good none of us do:)

I was told to use sweet potatoes or yams instead of regular white potatoes. If I recall correctly, it has to do with the lower glycemic load of the sweet potatoes. They didn't negatively effect my weight loss at all.

My feeling about these two flavors is...... Meh.

    Not horrible. Not amazing.

Peaches and cream is too sweet and very artificial.... kinda like the banana. It's not awful. Would be good in a smoothy. You can drink it straight. It's ok-ish.

Cookies and cream is weird. Remember Cookie Crisp Cereal? It tastes exactly like that. Some weird artificial chocolate chip cookie flavor that will remind you of childhood if you ever ate the stuff. Cookie Crisp Premier Protien isn't awful in coffee. Not as good as caramel. But you could use it in a pinch for a sort of weird mocha/biscotti flavor? Oh hell...who am I kidding...it's Cookie Crisp flavored coffee. LOL. It is what it is. It's not awful.

So there ya go. You can buy it at Wally World. I rarely shop the evil empire...but I was there the other day and curiosity got the better of me.

    Happy Protein Drinks!

I came to the same conclusion about Cookies and Cream. I though it would be a really amazing taste and I was really and truly disappointed!

  6. Hey! Speaking of bariatric muffins ... that reminds me. I found a Protein waffle at the local supermarket. The brand name is Kodiak Cakes. 2 of them have 280 calories and 15g of protein and only a total of 25g of carbs. Very filling an delicious!

Matty's got a date and posting about emotions, and love and stuff....so sweet ^_^

LOL! Slow down there ... no love yet but I do like her. She understands the importance of staying focused to achieve weight loss and does med student rounds with a bariatric surgeon. That's why I am excited but have to temper it a little. I don't want to get my hopes up, especially because I am not working yet and still have progress to make. I am starting driving for Schneider National on August 6th. I have to be over 120 days post-op, before Schneider's medical team will clear me.

I don't think I'd ever poop without carbs. I do eat a healthy amount. I have fruit, and some whole grains, legumes...ect. I just try to keep it under 50 (60 max!) carbs per day.

Smart way to go about it. I think I am going to adopt your philosophy. No more than 60.

  9. This happens! It's happened to me but it isn't true weight gain. Do you know the gargantuan amount of calories that you'd have to eat in order to truly gain that? It's probably just Water or whatever. I remember when I had my last check in appointment and discovered I had lost a whopping 6 inches off of my waist and I was down in the dumps because I felt I wasn't making progress. Hang in there! ;-)

Its very sly how carbs sneak their way back in. I have to be so diligent about logging my food because now that I am eating more versatile foods, its easy to eat carb heavy.

I know right!? It's funny because yesterday, I drastically cut the carbs back and got constipated. Good thing I took some colace before bed. I also had some fruit before bed and some this morning for Breakfast. That got things going again. Holy cow!

I don't believe in God or Gods. Or fairies. Or UFOs. That DOES NOT MEAN I DON'T HAVE A BELIEF SYSTEM that is precious and important to me. To suggest my belief system doesn't matter because I don't share your obsession with the supernatural is frankly... incredibly short sighted, self important and insulting.

My belief in science, reason, the quantifiable, in what can be proven with empirical evidence.... is something I take enormous comfort in. Having the courage to tell the truth about what can and cannot be known is hugely important to how I live my life, how I metabolize difficult times, how I survive hardship and live a happy fulfilling life.

Supernatural antiquated beliefs do not comfort me.

You're asserting that a guy saying..."Happy Holidays" in passing is the same as going to someone in crisis and inflicting your beliefs on them. It's not remotely the same.

If prayers are not wanted by the person in crisis, don't announce them! If you don't know...asking is a great way to help. "would you like me to pray for you?" is a pretty easy thing to ask.

Failing to do so would be like me showing up to your mother's funeral and saying...let me comfort you with my beliefs by saying that even though we know this heaven nonsense is a load of rubbish, and she's gone for good now.....she lead an impacting life that is a terrific legacy!

I might feel strongly convicted and I might BELIEVE this in my bones....but to say so in a time of crisis when I know it goes against YOUR beliefs is rude as hell.

    it's different. Pay attention.

When people are in crisis we help them. We put their comfort first.

Atheists believe in emotions like love!

  12. How's everyone doing? I am honking along but not losing weight as fast as I liked so I went back to tracking and discovering some nasty little carbs that have mysteriously come back. Hoping to get back on track. I'd like to drop 10 more pounds before I start driving a truck again. At least I am not gaining which is important!

  13. I was a volunteer EMT and I have seen people in various states of death and decline. One of my patients looked up at me and said, "I think I am going to die now." He had a DNR order so we didn't use CPR or an AED. He had a big smile on his face as he died and I knew his suffering was over. It is this patient that helped me to lose my fear of death.

So it’s been a while since I last posted any questions on here but I think it’s time. I’ll be 4 months post surgery at the end of June. I’m currently weighing in at 259lbs with 40 more pounds to go to reach my goal. Working out has been great even though I’m chronically sore all the time. My issues are that I still can’t seem to get enough Protein in daily. I’m still drinking a Premiere Protein Shake every morning and I try to eat a healthy lunch (mostly Flame Broiler mini chicken bowls with brown rice and veggies). It takes me 2 hours to finish it. But by dinner time I’m lucky enough to get 2 or 3 bites of food in before my stomach starts hurting and I’m nauseously full. Is this a normal occurrence or should I be worried that something is wrong with my gut or am I just being a dork? Thanks for your input!

Man you lost quickly! I am not far as far along as you are and I still don't eat very much at all.

I'm not here very much, but saw this and felt compelled to respond.

You are going through one of the most difficult times of your life. You're seriously being re-born into a new person and there is deep doo-doo sh*t afoot. These are cataclismic things we experience post surgery, not just physical and they involve the mind, spirit as well as the body.

Quite frankly, I would say, if anyone is having difficulties, then they need to get to a therapist pdq and talk it out and work through it ON THEIR OWN. Cuz mostly? This is an "I, me, my" problem, and not as much a partner problem. You ASKED to have the surgery (that's a royal "you" btw). Now it's your responsibility to deal and not blame an innocent person. (Of course, sometimes the partners are not so innocent.)

If I had advice to give to people it would be: Don't make ANY serious life changes regarding situation for at least 12-18 months following surgery. That means, if you're not dating now, don't start until you work through your crap and know better about what you want from life. That means, if you were in a stable relationship BEFORE surgery, and now it's janked, don't make any relationship decisions until you know how things shake out and how you feel after your hormones, moods, etc have calmed the fuc* down.

And lastly, if you have a fella that's good as gold and loyal and true, you should give the therapist and yourself a serious talking to, cuz these dudes do NOT grow on trees. Quite a crap ton of them are totes assh*ts. And you should work so hard remembering why you loved him in the first place and look ONLY on the positives until you have found your "sea legs."

Ok, so that's my advice. Get counseling, love yourself, work on yourself, and remember why you love your guy.

This is why I am really not actively pursuing any kind of relationship. I wouldn't mind a friends with benefits arrangement, but man, the only commitment I need is that to myself right now; to see this journey to its natural completion at goal weight.

We were on the road shopping for a new (used) car for my kiddo.

The rest of the family wanted good old BK Steakhouse....so we went to see that creepy king.

I had the veggie burger with all the veggies on it, just like they make it... and an iced tea. And I'll admit it...I ate a couple of my hubby's fries.

Could not eat even half of the veggie burger....but it was freakin' delicious.

Half a veggie burger= 200 calories and 10 grams of protien. Throw in 50 calories for the fries I swiped. A totally do-able lunch budget:)

I feel kinda victorious when I can find ways to enjoy out to eat crap with friends and family....in a sensible way that doesn't break the calorie budget or derail my diet.

Win-win. I like options. And the half a veggie burger option...is awesome.

Also found an AWESOME car for the kiddo:) Almost a clone of her old one, only blue this time instead of brown. She's super excited:)

Good choice! I actually like that sandwich. I don't touch fries anymore because they actually taste kind of gross. I love a good burger with lettuce, Tomato, and onion. They are soft, go down easy, and typically last me two meals. I can really only get half of it down.

  17. If I drink Water too quickly, I start feeling a really warm sensation ... like I need to turn on the air conditioning. I feel really hot. Is this something that should be concerning? Also, I can no longer tolerate the fake sugar in beverages - they're causing me to run to the bathroom. I am just drinking water and the occasional Decaf coffee or decaf unsweetened ice tea. Jeez, this whole process continues to be an evolution and learning rolled into one. I'll be 3 months post-op on Tuesday.

  18. The major upshot of losing the amount of weight that I have is that I am really looking good now, for the first time in a really long time. I am still heavy, but I look really good now. I feel more confident and now I am really freakin' horny. Fapping just isn't doing it for me anymore. It's frustrating! I am supposed to see my surgeon for a follow-up this week and she is major eye candy - more so than her bio picture. It's gonna be bad, she's got to know I am interested because I stare at her legs. She's in her late 20s, unmarried, and no boyfriend. I've got game and part of me wants to see how much of it I got back. Shoot, maybe I'll be just stupid enough to ask her out ... LOL! Got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Plus she's totally my type, she'd look good on my arm. She can work on me any day. I've got a weakness for highly educated, smart women.
