  1. Relationships are definitely more complex than friendships. In a relationship, we look for different things and we have different needs. Attraction is also a very complicated thing and I don't even understand it myself because sometimes there are bigger women that I've been strongly attracted to, and at other times, I have not. I have been strongly attracted to women whom would not be considered pretty in the classic sense. It has to be the totality of the person. This is why I really don't have a type! I have to meet the person and if we click, sh*t, we click. If not, that's fine too.

Sometimes I bemoan the fact that not even bigger women will check me out and then I have to remember that I as a bigger man, don't always check out bigger women. See, attraction is a really complicated thing. I've had bigger women look at me with disgust. I've had women whom would not be considered classically beautiful look at me with disgust. But I am never bitter because the shoe could just easily be on the other foot. ;)

  2. Carbonated drinks are really not a good idea at all. I've been warned that they can cause stomach leakage and even tear at the surgical staples. I will be giving up soda, beer, and sugar once I am post-op. I am operating on the principle that I should never go back to these kinds of foods again. We have to remember that WLS is a tool that helps with one part of the equation - it isn't the total answer.

I’m 6 weeks post-op and I’m always tireddd and sleepy. I need my caffeine to get me thru 8 am 4 hour lectures😩😩 how much longer do i need to wait?? Please help

I was told that I must give up caffeinated beverages altogether. I am fine with that because I could always take them or leave them. It must be difficult for people who have the caffeine and nicotine addictions.

  4. I will be getting gastric bypass surgery next month on February 8th. Right now, I am in pretty bad shape and can only really walk for short amounts of time. If I try to do too much, I am left limping from back, knee, hip, and ankle pain. I have a high tolerance for the pain but it is like an 8/10. I understand the importance of physical activity, especially post-surgery. What's the best way to get started? How often did you exercise, post-op? What kinds of small goals did you set for yourself?

After I got through the major portion of my weight loss, I had to work with my nutritionist to figure out ways to eat more calories and make the weight loss stop. At 6'2, I wasn't comfortable in the low 170s but kept losing weight because of the amount of physical activity I was doing combined with the ~1200 calories I was eating. That was a bit mind boggling mentally... but we figured it out and I don't feel limited in anything that I want to do physically, I just have to eat more often and add in health fats (avocado, nut butters, etc) when I exercise a lot. I'm confident that you'll be able to figure it out too!

What procedure did you have? I am going the RNY route and I think your problem would be one that I would be happy to have. Right now, I can only dream of being active. Well, in the not too distant future this will happen. I'm scheduled for surgery on the 8th of February.

    Fellas,

I’m scheduled for surgery 1/3/18 I’m having the sleeve. I’m 35 years old and 6’5” around 363 but I’m really concerned about excess skin after. It’s to the point I’m reconsidering my decision to go forward with the surgery. I really need this surgery due to some health issues but the excess skin issue is really starting to deter me. Any advice?

Oh man! You're still quite young. Don't let excess skin dissuade you. You could be in my shoes with Type 2 Diabetes, sleep apnea, AND high blood pressure. I wish I had thought about bariatric surgery 5 years ago. I am 40 now and just grateful for the opportunity.

  7. I am willing to bet, your biggest cheerleader will be your son. Once you get to goal weight, you and your son can revisit the cruise and both of you can fully participate. I hate feeling like I cannot participate in life. I want to date, I want to be active, and I want to be healthy.

It took me developing Type 2 Diabetes to finally get me to the point of considering surgery. I am going to do the RNY because the outcome of diabetes reversal is the best. I miss the mountains and being able to ride my bicycle as well. I am wishing you all of the best. This will be kind of like the "do-over" moments from our childhoods. We get a chance as an adult to start our lives anew. I am single and 40 and can't "weight" for my brother's wedding in August. I have surgery on the 8th of Feb and (hopefully) come August, I'll get to rock that tuxedo.

So I am starting to believe they are a myth! I have been on dating sites and most women have dogs or don't like cats. WTH? where are all the single cat ladies that I always heard so much about? I'm a single cat guy so it's obvious that a single cat lady is my match. haha

I am a cat guy too! Good to see another guy that likes felines.

I just added up how much the Vitamins my surgeon wants me to take after bypass. Annually it's $1,177! He wants me to take the following:

Bariatric Advantage Advanced Multi EA twice day

Bariatric Advantage calcium citrate chews 3x a day

Bariatric Advantage Probiotic twice a day

    Biotin once a day

    B12 once a week

I'm thinking I could probably save some money on the Calcium and probiotic by finding a different brand...?

Compared to the medicines that you would've needed to help treat the maladies as a result of obesity, this is a drop in the bucket. Just what I need to treat my diabetes alone amounts to over 200 a month. Test strips, needle tips for the pens, and lancets. It all adds up. 1,177.00 for a year of Vitamins and supplements would be a substantial savings for me.

I've created a surgery-focused Twitter account and would like to follow other RNY patients (both pre-op and post-op), as well as perhaps some bloggers and such. Any recommendations for people with particularly good feeds, or your own surgery-focused accounts? (Mine's @MistchiefMgnd if you want to follow it.)

If you'd like, you could follow me. My twitter handle is mind_nmotion. I don't use it that much though.

THAT has NEVER worked for me!! I also get angry and it will make me want the bad stuff all the more!! I don't need anyone telling me what I can or cannot eat or drink!!! I don't find it helpful at all! I have spent my life with others looking and telling me what and how to diet and eat!! Nothing makes me madder than someone commenting on what and how much I am eating!!

Absolutely. If you want to piss me off, comment on my food and eating.

I have always when someone tries to be my 'food police'. But i'm wondering, do you find having your significant other or bestie acting as your "Food Police" helpful or not?

My father was a "food cop." His behaviour is partially responsible for where I am today. I think the "food police" is detrimental.

I’m 31 and single, have never dated in my entire life. However, I met a guy last year and we’ve been talking for almost a year now. He likes my weight but hates that my self esteem is so low. He wants me to do something about my health so that I will be happy but I have no intent of telling him I’m having weight loss surgery. I told him that I’m working on myself (true), I’m seeing a nutritionist (true), and that I was told my metabolism is really bad considering I’m obese and I don’t really eat (also true). I don’t know, just feel like my decision isn’t his business and that he would take issue with it. Sorry for the essay, lol, am I wrong?

This isn't an issue of being right or wrong. It is simply how you feel. If you don't want to tell him, then you certainly don not have to.

And even if it were easier, why would that be a bad thing? Anyone who has decided to go the surgery route has certainly exhausted all other options....no one chooses this because dieting is hard...we choose it because dieting doesn't work long term.

You're correct. The only thing that matters is long term success and weight loss surgery speaks for itself. The long term success is ~65%. I like those odds.
