    Follow-up

Today I have a follow-up with my program's nurse practitioner. If it wasn't for my hospitalization last week, it would've been a fairly clean follow-up. My surgeon wanted me to keep this appointment. I was really hoping to be able to begin weight lifting again. I might ask the NP if she could clear me for weight lifting even though the answer will probably be no. They say it never hurts to ask, so I will. I am concerned about losing muscle mass and I need to strength train my legs or cardiovascular progress won't happen. Perhaps I will be allowed to do something like the inclined leg press. This would be good enough.

    Follow-up

Thank you, @FluffyChix . Today, I am just too worn out to go to the gym. I slept about 7 hours but feel like I have had none. I had a scheduled follow-up with the sleep doctor and my blood pressure is off the charts. 166/100 today. Something could be really wrong. In fact, I am about ready to try and get some more sleep.

Thank you. I actually am an atheist but I accept prayer as a well-wish. Again, thank you for your kind words. Recovery is one day at a time.

    Dumping syndrome

Dumping syndrome is an untold misery. I start to sweat, shake, and get a rapid heart beat. Then there'd better be a throne nearby because lookout, she's gonna blow.

    Follow-up

My surgeon surprised me by dropping by during my appointment. There's good news and bad news. First, the good: I lost 2.5" from my neck and 6" from my waist. Now, the bad: My surgeon had taken a second look at the CT scan because apparently something else concerned her. I have a mass on my stomach that is worrisome and will need to be biopsied because she can't tell if it's a fatty mass or if it's something altogether different. FML! Oh well, biopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning and I will have to remain overnight.

  7. Figuring out the new post-surgery normal takes some detective work and trial and error. I learned something new about myself over the past two days about the cause of the nausea I was experiencing. I never believed that the nausea was actually my body screaming for food because I don't get the classic hunger pangs and I know that I am well-hydrated as I carefully track the amount of liquid I drink. So, I upped my caloric intake to 1200 and started eating more frequently, like every two hours. Miraculously, the nausea has dissipated quite a bit. I am also making certain to get in 2-3 servings of fresh fruit and that has helped as well. Over the past two days, when I weighed myself in the morning I was down a pound each day. I should also add that I think something in the Mio flavor drops must've really been causing some irritation because I started feeling a little bit better after tossing them in the trash and just drinking good, old fashioned H2O. I did not get very good input from my program's R.D. I found I had to do a lot of work on my own to see what food ideas are good and what are not so good. Also, contrary to conventional wisdom about less sugar being better, I found that adding a daily Kind Protein Bar in helped me feel a whole better. By the nutrition label, it would be considered decent quality at 12g of protein and 8g of sugar. It just goes to show that each person's body is very different in its wants and needs. Despite adding the Kind Protein Bar, I have not seen an increase in blood glucose on the meter. Plus I discovered that my stomach has no problem with nuts at all and the bars digested smoothly. That said, I don't really want to eat more than one a day.

    VEGAS!!!

OMG! Viva Las Vegas! I've had some incredibly fun times there. I last went in February of 2015 when I took the Luxor for almost 2K at the black jack table. I reckon I need to go back there at some point.
  9. I'm almost 2 months post op and my A1C dropped from 7.8 to 6.4. I had gastric bypass because it has the best chance of permanent diabetes reversal. Sent from my Z981 using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I had some mad energy today because I spaced out while doing my favorite exercise, the elliptical machine. I only intended to do about 20-25 minutes and looked down at the timer and it read 40. Ooops! Then I looked at the calories burned and it was at 560 and I sighed because it means I am going to have to eat that much more to keep from getting nauseous or sick. Well, I guess this is a good problem to have.

  11. I am a slow loser. I am well behind the average. It sucks :-(
  12. I have days where I feel the same way except I have had a rough time of recovery. I spent 3 and 1/2 days in the hospital this week because I developed a stricture. I had my bypass on March 12th. The hardest part will be to find your new "normal" and getting used to it. Just take it one day at a time. Nausea is very unpleasant and because it is your body screaming about something it wants/needs and interpreting the sign is challenging. I think I found that I wasn't eating enough and my new "hunger pang" is nausea. I am just 1 week shy of 2 months post-op and weight loss has been agonizingly slow for me.
  13. Hello to everyone. Hope all is well! I am still battling the nausea and trying to figure out what is causing it but at least I feel cheerful, not despondent.

Dang boy! I'm so sorry to hear this dude!!! I hope you get it figured out soon. Are you taking your vitamins on a full tummy after eating? Or on an empty tummy? Do you split up all your vitamins so you're not taking a whole handful at one time? Just wondering...

And how hydrated do you feel you are right now?

    Artificial sweeteners

I am getting away from the artificial sweeteners as much as possible now. I was using the Mio flavor drops and I think they were really doing my entire body a disservice. I got discharged from the hospital this morning (I had to go back due to a stricture) and the entire time all I had was water. I feel physically better as a result. Mio can suck it!

    Marijuana

I don't see the harm in pot. I would much rather encounter someone high on pot than drunk. I've neither seen nor heard of anyone going ballistic, high on grass.
  16. If CICO worked, there would be no need for all this other crap.

Let's Talk Dying By Your Own Hand!

I am looking for a way to grow my goatee again. I shaved it off because it's now all white. I am allergic to the Just For Men beard/mustache gel so that isn't an option. I miss my goatee and if y'all have any ideas, I am all eyes.
  20. Saddness .... some labs came back and my A1C is 6.4%. I was hoping that it would be in the normal range. Well, we'll see what it is like in 3 more months. The nurse practitioner at the hospital said that it is good progress. However, if in 3 months it does not get into a normal range, I'll need to go back on an oral medicine. When it rains it poors. At least, I finally got some sleep and I feel like getting up and walking around again. Anyone that thinks surgery is the easy way out is just plain ignorant. Le sigh!

My carb count is very low right now. Less than 30g total per day.

      FluffyChix

Yes that's awesome! I am thinking the 6.4 A1c is from your earlier stuff (leftover) when you weren't necessarily eating 30g per day?

You should check out Dr. Richard Bernstein MD-diabetologist. He pioneered the home glucometer and eating to your meter. He's got webinars online to watch. He's brilliant and takes a low carb, adequate protein approach to treating his patients. They have better bg control than I do! :D

He wrote a book called Diabetes Solutions - he's brilliant. https://www.target.com/p/dr-bernstein-s-diabetes-solution-the-complete-guide-to-achieving-normal-blood-sugars-revised/-/A-13776355?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&CPNG=PLA_Entertainment+Shopping&adgroup=SC_Entertainment&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=c&location=9027743&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwbKcu4Tn2gIVxcDACh1dHQ-KEAQYAiABEgIo4PD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Prior to surgery, mine was in the high 5s/low 6s, but they still kept me on Janumet XR. The first A1C I had done after surgery (about two months out), it had dropped to 5.2, so they took me off the Janumet. You'll get there!

    Well Alert the Media!

Here's the answer to the easy way out comment that stops them cold in their tracks: 1) I've had to go on a restrictive, liquids-only pre-op diet for 2 weeks. 2) I've had to re-lean how to eat again beginning with clear liquids, moving on to pureed, then soft foods, and finally regular food. 3) I can no longer use food to drown out anxiety, emotional pain, etc. I have to deal with it face to face so I have good days and bad days. 4) My stomach has good days and bad days and I don't always no which one it will be. Then I have to carefully eat so as not to overeat and become sick. Food must be carefully and mindfully chewed. 5) I have to work out 3-4x per week 6) I need regular vitamins for the rest of my life. * So tell me again, honey, how I took the easy way out.
  23. I had a setback yesterday. I went to the ER in severe stomach pain and nausea. It turns out that I had a stricture so the ER stabilized me and then I was transported to Wilmington Hospital, where I had the surgery to begin with. They did some emergent repairs. I am doing okay but in too much pain to get around. Anyhow, the surgeon emphasized rest and not getting up and moving. I will be discharged on Friday morning as they want to keep me for observation. Life happens but we keep moving, right-o?
